Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 385
Chapter 385:.
Felix seemed to be on the verge of collapse. He gripped Derek’s arm with one hand and rubbed his forehead with the other. His shoulders were shaking.
Meanwhile, Derek stood there, motionless. Moments later, Felix raised his head. I could tell there were tears running down his cheeks.
When he spoke, he looked like he was about to cry out loud.
“I’ve lost my best friend, and now I’ve lost my partner as well. I’m living a life more miserable than a beggar.”
None of us could speak at that moment, as we all understood the pain he was feeling at that moment.
“Everyone has been telling me to move on, but I’m tired of hearing it! How am I supposed to move on now that I’ve even lost my best friend?” It seemed that his emotions had been pent up for a long time, and now they had finally boiled over.
Despite his image, he finally broke down as he clung tightly to Derek’s arm. Eric couldn’t bear to see Felix like this, so he lowered his gaze and remained silent.
After a few minutes, he raised his head again.
“There are plenty of fish in the sea, Felix. You just have to catch the next one. And you haven’t lost your best friend, man. You’re the one who’s broken all ties with him.” Eric had hit the nail on the head.
Felix’s lips trembled, and he looked crestfallen. Suddenly, he picked up a bottle of beer and gulped it down. Then he flopped down on his back on the couch, crying like a child.
Seeing this, I finally understood him. He was not a cold-hearted man. He had simply fallen in love with a woman and loved his best friends. It was because of these very feelings that he was now suffering so much.
At last, Felix had let go of Derek’s arm. Derek took the opportunity and sat down on the couch next to Felix instead of leaving.
One of them was lying on the couch and the other sitting. They didn’t really talk, but they seemed to have reached a silent understanding.
Derek and I didn’t leave the bar until Felix had cried himself to sleep. When Eric walked us out of the bar, he said, “Derek, you’ve seen for yourself. Felix worries about you. It’s just that he’s been really bad since the breakup with Louise. He was out of it, so leave him alone, okay?”
Derek tightened his grip on his umbrella and said, “I know.”

After getting into his car, I told him I wanted to go back to my old house. He didn’t hesitate to drive me there.
After getting out of the car, I entered the house. There, I stood in front of my parents’ portraits, and then swept the dust off them.
Then, I went back to my old bedroom and pulled a suitcase out from under the bed. It was covered with a thick layer of dust.
When I opened it, I saw that there were small objects inside the suitcase. I found a bag and put them in it one by one.
“What’s that?” asked Derek as he sat on the edge of the bed.
Continuing to pack, I told him, “These are all the gifts Louise has given me over the past few years. Some are birthday gifts, some are New Year’s gifts, and so on.”
It was then that I took a kaleidoscope from the suitcase. My thoughts were immediately diverted at the sight of it.
“This was the first gift Lulu gave me. That year, she ran away from home and I took her in. That’s how we became best friends. I found out that her father had bought her this kaleidoscope abroad and she gave it to me. At that time, I was still very young, so I was really looking forward to having those novelty toys, pretty stationery and clothes, just like any other child would. That’s why, back then, this kaleidoscope was my most prized possession. I always carried it in my backpack when I went to school. And whenever I had time, I would look inside it. Even though it was such a simple toy, I couldn’t get enough of it.” I told Derek all about it.
Each gift had a story, and everyone witnessed how my friendship with Louise blossomed. I took all these things back to the villa and stored them carefully. I was afraid I would never see my best friend again, and these things were my mementos of our friendship.
As I lay in bed, my mind was in chaos. I had been worried about Louise all this time. I was so worried about her that I almost felt suffocated.
I wasn’t sure when I had fallen asleep, but when I woke up, I saw that Derek was no longer by my side.
