Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 416
Chapter 416:
Aaron didn’t ask any more questions. Maybe he already knew what was going on. Presumably, the gossip about Derek and Becky had already spread around town.
“We should stay at Lensy’s for the night. We’ll talk about the rest tomorrow,” Aaron said. Then he drove to downtown Lensy and there we found a restaurant for dinner.
After ordering a few dishes, he also ordered a bottle of liquor. I didn’t feel like eating, so I barely ate anything.
“Try not to think too much, Eveline. Just enjoy the food.” Aaron did his best to comfort me and drank the liquor by himself.
Later, he finished the whole bottle. His hand was on his forehead and his face was red. It was clear that he was already drunk.
I owed Aaron a lot. It was already the third time he had come to help me in the middle of the night. The first time was when I went to Shane’s hometown, and he showed up like a timely rain to save me. The second time was when I was at the Qinben bus station.
After receiving a call from me, he drove there for hours without a second’s hesitation. And today, I had no idea how to express my gratitude to him.
“Thank you, Aaron.” I had no idea what else to say.
Aaron put his hand down and smiled at me. “You don’t need to thank me. But…you’re welcome.”
After we left the restaurant, we went to a nearby hotel. There was only one room left in the hotel. Just as I was about to turn around and leave, Aaron grabbed my hand and handed his ID card to the desk clerk.
“One room is enough for us,” he told me.
His words stunned me. Aaron took my hand and led me inside.
“I don’t think you’ll be able to sleep tonight. I probably won’t either, so let’s go to a room and talk, okay?”. I trusted Aaron completely.
To me, he was a person who could stick to his principles and was a trustworthy man. Although the room we were given was small, it was fully furnished.
There was a separate bathroom in the room, a television, a double bed, a sofa, and a small round table by the window. Most importantly, it looked spotless.

The walls were lined with khaki wallpaper, and the lighting was warm. Aaron went out on the balcony to smoke and I followed him.
Below the balcony was the bustling night market. Fortunately, we were on a high floor, so the noises sounded far away.
“Eveline.” He seemed about to say something, but bit off the words.
“You don’t have to persuade me to come back. The current situation is not due to just one or two things. It’s happened because of the accumulated contradictions between Derek and me. And I’ve mentally prepared myself for this,” I said.
Aaron rested his hands on the railing, looking off into the distance.
“Where are you planning to go? Wherever you go, you’ll have to start over. It won’t be easy for a woman to start from scratch,” he said.
I smiled bitterly and replied, “I never had anything to begin with.”
“You have another option, Eveline. You can stay.” He rubbed his brow, apparently affected by the liquor he had drunk earlier. I shook my head.
Aaron let out a sigh and shoved the carton of cigarettes into his pockets.
Actually, I had seen him throw the empty pack into the wastebasket earlier. He seemed to remember it now, so he stopped looking for cigarettes and just shoved his hands in his pockets.
The wind blowing off the balcony was stronger than usual and cool to the touch; with it, I caught the faint smell of alcohol wafting through the air. Soon I was shivering with cold.
“Are you cold?” asked Aaron, who seemed to have noticed me shivering.
“A little.” I nodded, intending to walk back into the room.
But suddenly Aaron pulled me into his arms.
“Eve, I’m in love with you.”
The sound of his voice was husky, but affectionate. I could tell he was a little drunk. I tried to pull away from him, but he was hugging me so tightly I could barely elbow him.
“You don’t have to be afraid, Eve. I won’t do anything bad to you. I’m so afraid of seeing you hurt, so how could I possibly want to hurt you?”
Hearing that, I stopped struggling.
“Aaron, you’re drunk,” I whispered.
That’s when I heard him laugh bitterly.
“Yes, I am drunk. I wouldn’t have the courage to tell you I love you if I wasn’t drunk.”
The scent of alcohol lingered in the air. And little by little, I was overcome by the sadness of this moment.
