Chapter 43:.

When I walked out of the studio and into my previous living room. I saw that the decor had already changed. It was as if I had never lived here.

Suddenly, I heard a meowing sound coming from the balcony. The moment I approached, I found a dirty cat in a corner next to the pile of consumables.

It had lost a lot of weight and was looking at me with pitiful eyes.

I deduced that Share and Vivian didn’t take one of them while I was gone.

The cat named Ugly walked toward me. I could tell by the cat’s movements how weak and loyal he was.

I didn’t care that he was now dirty, so I didn’t hesitate to pick him up in my arms.

Suddenly I heard the door open.

Vivien, She was standing right in front of me.

“You came home why is that, are you worried I’m going to steal some of your stupid stuff?” She directed an aggressive look.

This time, I couldn’t help but ask her, “How long has it been since you’ve fed Ugly? How could Shane starve him to death?

“Vivien isn’t much of a cat person,” he replied.

“If you feel so bad about your cat, then just take him away, Vivien has asked me to throw him somewhere, I’ve already prepared your stuff.”

After saying that, he pulled a bag with what appeared to be quite a lot of clothes out from the balcony.

“All your things are here.”

He opened the bag and discovered that it was a bag of junk.

Inside were several items, including fragments of my wedding photo with Shane, and my old toiletries. Most of them had been broken.

So this bag of junk was the only souvenir I had of my marriage to Shane, huh?

“Should I thank you for not throwing this stuff away?”

“I was planning on calling you to come get them. But if you don’t want them. I’m going to throw them away.”

“Actually, I just wanted to come back to get my clothes back, since I had a lot of clothes I could still wear, and I didn’t want to just throw them away. But now, the clothes had been piled with the garbage in this woven bag as if they had been dug up from a garbage dump.”

Having said that, I walked away with Feo in my arms. As I walked away,

Shane asked, “Did you really marry Derek Sullivan?”

I turned around, staring at him like he was a fool. “Are you blind, didn’t you see us yesterday?” he asked.

“Does it bother you that I married a good man, Shane? Does it disappoint you that I didn’t get down on my knees and beg you to stay? Does it make you sad that I didn’t die because you cheated on me and left me?”

“Eveline, do you really think a man like Derek would fall in love with you?” asked Shane, staring me straight in the eyes.

His question made me uncomfortable.

I was aware that Derek wasn’t falling in love with me out of love. And I could tell from Shane’s words the contempt he felt at the moment. He didn’t think highly of me, and maybe he thought Derek would feel the same way about me. Maybe in his heart. I was nothing more than a woman who would never please any man, and deserved to be abandoned by him.

“What’s that got to do with you? Mind your own business, Shane.”

I hurried to the door, carrying my beloved cat. I used to feel warm and comfortable in this house, but now. being in here for even more than a second made me sick.

“Wait a minute.” Shane stopped me again.

He went back into the bedroom and pulled out a pair of wool knit slippers.

“My mother made these slippers for you. You already know that, don’t you? Take them.”

Really. I was very touched that her mother would take the time to hand-make slippers for me while she was busy with farm chores. I didn’t have much interaction with her though. I figured she was a simple woman. So, I appreciated the slippers very much from the moment I received them. I didn’t even wear them to make sure they stayed in good condition. Even to this day, they were still like new.

“Shane, your mother gave them to her daughter-in-law. Now that we have nothing to do with each other, it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to keep them.” I tried to speak as bluntly as possible, but it was hard to hide my sadness.

Shane seemed to have one more thing to say, but my phone started ringing. It was Derek.

I hesitated a bit before telling him the truth: After listening, he said he would pick me up right away. With that, I left along with my cat right away.
