Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 434
Chapter 434:
Deep in my heart, I was hoping Derek could offer me an explanation; maybe even a beautiful lie.
But alas, he merely lowered his gaze and fell silent. The expression on his face was the epitome of helplessness.
“Eveline, the Earth is round. No matter how far you go, you will eventually come back to the starting point and return to me.” Still, she refused to give me an explanation. My heart filled with sadness, but I looked into his eyes and pretended not to care.
“How are you so sure of that?” He sat down on the armrest of the chair and stroked my shoulder with his palm. The warmth of his strong hands felt all too real to me.
“If you refuse, I will follow in your footsteps and search for you in every corner of the world,” he replied.
I sighed, looking away in silence. I wasn’t like Becky, who did whatever she pleased. And it wouldn’t do me any good to become too willful. Personally, I preferred not to obsess over a problem. But if he didn’t give me an explanation and untie the knot in my heart, there was no way I was going to go back to him.
Ironically, in the past, his heart and mine were inseparable even though our lives and statuses were very different. But now that our situation was almost the same, we were separated by a huge emotional wall. A few days after my children turned one month old, they cried non-stop one night.
Although they weren’t sick or anything, they refused to eat. Considering they were still babies, all they could do was cry, and they were unable to express themselves. I panicked. The maid told me they might be constipated, but she didn’t dare jump to conclusions.
She suggested I take them to the hospital for a checkup. That’s when I thought of Dr. Swain. So we immediately took my children to his clinic.
Dr. Swain prescribed some traditional medicines and advised me to take them. Then I could administer them to my children through breast milk. The smell of the medicine hung in the air, especially in the kitchen. When the medicine had cooled, Derek handed me the bowl.
After taking it, I took a sip. It tasted so bitter that I almost threw up.
“Forget it. Give it to me,” Derek said.
I looked at him and asked, “You’re going to drink it, but what are you going to do next?”
He took the bowl and gulped down a large amount. Suddenly, he grabbed me by the back of the neck and kissed me. He opened my teeth with the tip of his tongue and pushed the liquid medicine into my mouth. It was the first time he had kissed my lips since we met again, and it was meant to be. Even after being separated for more than half a year, his kiss was still powerful enough to make my mind go blank.
And miraculously, the medicine tasted less bitter in my mouth. Once I had swallowed the medicine, he released me and then gave me a brilliant smile. His smile was still as charming as ever. He took another sip and repeated the same method until he had finished pouring my entire bowl of medicine.
“Still bitter? Drink some water to cleanse your palate,” she suggested.
He picked up a glass from the table with the intention of drinking water. But before I could, I snatched the cup from his hand and took a big gulp, nearly choking from the amount of water I ingested.
“Slow down.” Derek patted me on the back as a smile formed on his lips.
When I returned to my room, I picked up one of my babies and nursed him. He was probably tired, so he had stopped crying. The maid took the other one into the living room, coaxing him as she walked.
Meanwhile, Derek stood off to the side in silence. I looked at him and noticed that his eyes were fixed on the baby suckling at my breast.
His eyes were glued to my chest and I noticed his Adam’s apple bobbing up and down. After feeding the children, the maid went to bed with them.
I felt uneasy, so I went into the living room and sat on the couch. Derek also came out and sat down next to me. Neither of us turned on the light and we sat in the dark.
“Was it you who arranged Doctor Swain’s two hundred thousand dollar investment in me?”. I asked finally.
