Derek sat silently in the middle of the darkness. A bitter smile appeared on my lips as he said, “I thought I was so lucky to have met people who willingly helped me in my time of need. I thought I deserved everything I’ve gotten, but it turns out it was just a nice illusion.”

Derek hugged me and kissed my head. “I don’t wish you to suffer.”

When Dr. Swain spoke to me tonight, he advised me to appreciate everything I had. I knew that he and his wife were good people, and that their kindness to me was not entirely due to Derek’s arrangement.

In their opinion, no matter how successful I was, they believed that it would not be easy for me to raise my children alone. Even if I could provide a comfortable life for them, that would never replace the love of a parent.

It was easy to discern that Dr. Swain meant that I had to make some compromises for the sake of my children. Derek lifted my chin, slowly leaning toward me.

Not a second later, he began to kiss me with his trembling lips. I didn’t reject him and let him continue his gentle kiss. He pulled me closer to him with one hand and grabbed the back of my neck with the other. This time, his kiss was more cautious than impetuous.

I felt like I was about to drown, and the only thing keeping me from drowning was a straw. But I didn’t resist the urge to drown in the pleasure of his kiss.

The feeling of familiarity had awakened my longing for him after all these months away from him. On the small couch, in the middle of a dark room, our bodies were close to each other. Somehow, I felt all his suffering. But maybe it wasn’t so surprising that I could feel what he felt, since we knew each other’s bodies so well. But to my surprise, he did nothing but kiss me.

From this prolonged kiss, I could feel his affection, how he had held back, and how patiently he had been waiting for the opportunity to kiss me once more. And once he finished kissing me, he pressed my head against his chest. I could hear his heart beating.

On this quiet night, it sounded like an ancient bell; peaceful and distant. When my children were two months old, I went back to work full time. I set up a small room next to my office. There, the maid would take care of my children during the day. If I ever needed to feed my children, she would bring them to me. That way I could take care of my children and take care of my business.

Jolly Beauty Salon’s beauty care service, powered by traditional medicine, had been very well received in the market. I had planned to expand my business into other products, such as postpartum care, makeup and other related fields.

Half an hour later, I walked into the sitting room of my office. It was a sitting room of several square meters. Here was a small bed where I could sleep whenever I needed to. I lay down on the bed, quietly consulting my phone. Twenty minutes later, I heard footsteps coming from outside.

I got up and opened the door. I saw Ady standing in front of the flower pot. She turned around, apparently surprised by me.

“Ady, have you come for water again?”. I asked, slowly walking out of the room with a slight smile on my face.

Ady looked down, visibly uneasy. I walked over to her side and removed a cloth from the planter. It was then that I noticed a mini pinhole camera on a branch, and picked it up. I stared at the object in my hand, smiling.

“Ady, what the hell is this? Explain.”
