Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 48
Chapter 48:.
“You’re testing my patience.” Derek’s voice was deep and husky, his eyes brimming with desire. I held my breath, feeling nervous.
“I…I don’t want to take it anymore. Anyway, I’m going to fix breakfast.” So, I pushed him away in an attempt to escape.
However, he pressed my shoulders, and pressed me with his whole body. I couldn’t move at all.
“Can I do it?” The sound of his voice pleased like an electric current running through my ears.
I rested my hands on his chest, steeled myself, and looked into his eyes.
“Do you know who I am?”
After catching his breath, Derek laughed at me.
“What’s wrong with you, silly? You’re Eveline, my wife.” He was right. We were now husband and wife, so his request wasn’t unreasonable.
However, when he said ‘happy birthday,’ the last time we had sex kept running through my mind. It kept reminding me that I loved someone else. Considering how he greeted that woman a happy birthday even though she was barely conscious, it must have meant that she was very important to him.
I assumed this showed me that just because a man wanted you didn’t mean he loved you. But we women were different. We preferred to have sex on a loving basis.
So I pulled him aside and said, “I have to get up. I’m going to go out and get a decent job today.”
I was worried that he would force me to have sex with him, but at the same time I was also worried that he would be upset that I refused to have sex with him.
Derek was silent for a long time. Gradually, his breathing steadied. He pinched my cheek and stopped persuading me to have sex.
“Are you determined to stay alone?”
“Yes,” I said. “I can’t always depend on someone else. The only person I can really count on is myself. It’s like what you told me before. You only believe in yourself.”
It seemed that Derek didn’t expect me to use his own words to persuade him. After a while, he smiled at me.

“Eveline, you have to understand that your husband is a trustworthy person; maybe even more so than you.”
I stared at him, dumbfounded, as he got out of bed and headed for the bathroom.
“I need to take a cold shower,” he said as he closed the door.
Soon I heard the sound of running water coming from the bathroom. I quickly got up to change my clothes. But the moment I took off my clothes, the bathroom door suddenly opened.
Instinctively, I covered my breasts with my hands. After peeking through the door with half of my wet body out of the bathroom, he realized that I was half-naked. Amused by my reaction, Derek smiled mischievously at me.
“Wait for me. I’ll take you to your destination,” he said.
“No need to do that. I can call a cab,” I replied.
Derek didn’t respond, nor did he have any intention of closing the door and continuing his shower. He just continued to stare at me in silence.
I closed my eyes, letting out a sigh. “Good,” I muttered.
Satisfied with my response, he closed the bathroom door again and continued showering.
I noticed that he seemed to enjoy showering in the morning.
After breakfast, Derek drove me downtown. Once I got out of the car, he left.
I had applied to different hospitals, and had even gone to several private medical organizations, but I made sure to avoid Virtue Hospital. I figured that even if there was a suitable job for me there, I would rather not work there again.
A big part of it was because I didn’t want to see Shane and Vivien anymore, and I didn’t want them to trample on my self-esteem.
But sometimes, life could be a cruel trickster. The more I preferred not to see them, the more often they appeared before me. When it was time to eat, I felt a little hungry, so I bought bread at a local bakery and sat down on a bench on the pedestrian street to rest. At the moment, there were only a few people on this street.
As I ate my bread, I looked around and saw the two people I least wanted to see.
Right across the street was a wedding photo studio. Through the clear glass, I saw Vivien wearing a wedding dress and admiring herself in the mirror. An employee was helping her with her dress and hairstyle. Meanwhile, Shane was standing in front of her with a smile on his face. Perhaps he must have been complimenting her on her beauty, considering how proud Vivien looked at that moment.
He had already seen her wedding photo at her house, so they certainly weren’t at the studio just to have their pictures taken today. It wasn’t hard to deduce that they were here to try on dresses and makeup. Maybe they were going to have a wedding ceremony very soon.
To tell you the truth, I didn’t care about these people anymore. But, perhaps due to my boredom or exhaustion from walking all morning, I sat there watching them for a long time. Even by the time they left the studio, I still had half of the bread I was eating.
Soon enough, they spotted me. Shane didn’t seem to want to come closer, but I noticed that Vivien insisted on dragging him toward me.
