Chapter 5:.

I thought everything would be fine, as long as I didn’t die from being hit by a car.

Soon after, I heard the loud sound of brakes.

The impact of being hit wasn’t that strong, but it was enough to send me rolling to the ground.

Hearing a click, I looked up, albeit awkwardly.

Through the darkness, I saw a person walking toward me. His face was barely visible. Slowly, he lit a cigarette and the flame from the lighter reflected in his eyes.

He looked like a handsome man.

A second later, he blew a smoke ring, looking at me with interest. He didn’t speak until he knew I was so ashamed of myself that I wanted to hide from his gaze.

“Miss, why didn’t you choose someone more suitable to blackmail, why did you have to choose to get run over by my poor bicycle?”

The sound of his voice was deep and magnetic, but what he said was like a slap in my face.

Indeed, I was riding a mountain bike. The light I saw a few seconds ago must have come from the reflector on his bike.

Perhaps he must be thinking that because of how disheveled I looked and how embarrassed I seemed to be, he must have carefully orchestrated this fiasco to blackmail others.

When her eyes met mine, she froze for a moment, and the sneer on her face dissipated.

Quickly, I lowered my gaze, intent on not arguing. I clung to my legs as best I could and did not respond to him.

Seeing that I had no intention of asking him for compensation, or cooperating with his ridiculous display, he put his hand with half a cigarette between his fingers on the handlebars of the bicycle, and began to walk away.

As I watched him turn a corner and disappear from my sight, I eventually burst into tears.

At that moment, I wished he had stayed, even if he just wanted to laugh at me. At least I wouldn’t be alone.

On the dark and eerily silent mountainside, only the sound of my wailing could be heard.

Not long after, a light shone on me again, and I heard the sound of brakes once more.

I looked up in surprise and found the mountain bike at the side of the road.

The man had returned. He sat on the side of the road, smoking nonchalantly. “Aren’t you afraid of attracting ghosts because of how loud you cry?”

Stunned by his question, I looked up at him with tears in my eyes, and he looked back at me.

At that moment, only the spotlight illuminated our place. I could clearly see his face through the thin smoke.

His face was heavenly, handsome, charming and very masculine. Although he was wearing only sporty attire and his bangs were soaked with sweat, he looked strong and calm. Even his legs and arms were muscular.

Maybe he thought I wasn’t blackmailing him because I hadn’t asked him for compensation earlier. Right now, he just looked at me with confusion and doubt in his eyes.

“You don’t look good.” He looked at my bare feet and realized they were stained with blood and mud.

Instinctively, I held my arms tightly. “I’m just… I’m cold.”

He nodded, put the cigarette between his teeth, got up and pulled a coat from a backpack on the bike. Then, he slung it over my shoulders.

“Thank you,” I stammered.

I was touched by his act of chivalry, but I also felt uncomfortable. His coat still smelled like soap; clearly, it was freshly washed, but my whole body was very dirty.

“I think you need to go to the hospital,” he said.

To the hospital? Shane was a doctor who worked in a hospital, and yet he was the reason I was feeling so miserable right now.

With a bitter smile, I said, “I just want to go home.” The word ‘home’ made my heart ache once again.

Was it still my home?

The man looked at me for a while. His eyes gave off some kind of emotion that I couldn’t understand. He nodded his head and said, “I’ll take you home.”

I looked at his mountain bike as I heard him say that, and felt that this task might be a bit difficult on that vehicle.

He must have guessed what I was thinking, so he laughed and pulled out his phone to make a call.

“Timmy, drive the car over here.” After telling the other person our location, he disconnected from the call.

Embarrassed, I began awkwardly rubbing my shoulders and fell silent.

That’s when he lit another cigarette.

I realized he must be addicted to smoking.

“Aren’t you afraid I’ll cheat on you?” he said in a warm tone.

I shrugged my neck, feeling discouraged.

“I have nothing left to lose,” I told him .
