It all seemed so easy to Derek, So! I shouldn’t be so heartbroken over our breakup. As I smiled bitterly at my reflection in the mirror, I agreed to his suggestion.

Then, I put down the lipstick I had chosen, selected a brighter one and applied it to my lips.

As soon as I left my office, my assistant, who had just arrived, was startled to see me.

“Miss Stone, what are you doing here so early?”

As she spoke, her eyes rested on my lips. She rarely wore bright lipstick, so I figured she must have missed seeing it. I nodded my head before wordlessly stepping into the elevator.

As soon as I exited the company building, I saw Derek’s car. The windows were down. His eyes were closed, he was leaning against the back of the seat, his elbow resting on the window and a cigarette in his hand.

After taking a deep breath, I walked over to his car, opened the passenger seat door and climbed in. He seemed self-absorbed.

When I got into his car, he came to and looked at me.

For a moment, when he saw my lips, he was stunned. Then he put out his cigarette and started the car. After driving for a while, he took out a paper bag and handed it to me.

“You haven’t had breakfast, have you? Here, have something to eat. I bought it when I passed by a store.”

I took it but said nothing. When I saw the Lang’s Bakery logo on the paper bag, tears came to my eyes.

“Stop the car!” I said sharply.

Startled, he looked at me and stopped. I took a deep breath, trying to hold back the tears.

“I’ve been thinking about it all night, but I still haven’t been able to figure out why. It all happens so suddenly. You told me it’s because we have barriers between us after what happened to my father and yours. But I don’t think that’s the reason. If you suspect that the children are not yours, why didn’t you mention it when I gave birth to them? Our children are over a year old now, but not once have you doubted that they are your children in the last year. There are so many dubious details in what you said yesterday, I refuse to believe it.”

The more he talked, the angrier I got. I grabbed his arm, looking at him expectantly.

“Are you having difficulties, Derek? Have you run into any problems? If so, we can face it together. I’m not who I was anymore. I’m stronger now, I can help you.” Derek frowned, bit his lower lip and slowly pulled his arm away from my hand.

“I don’t have a problem,” he said.

“Derek, I love you!” The tears I had held back for so long could no longer be contained and came pouring out.

There was no longer any need to hide my emotions. It turned out that I was really bad at controlling my emotions.

I unbuckled my belt, grabbed his sleeve and burst into tears. “I love you. I don’t want to be separated from you. I need you and our children need you. Those children are unequivocally yours.”

I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him passionately. He pulled back to avoid my kiss, but his back was against the door, so he had no room to escape. Unfortunately, he didn’t kiss me back. Her calmness only served to unsettle me.

My lips trembled and my tears fell on his face. He put his hands on my shoulders, slowly pulling me away from him.

I noticed he had smudged his lips with my lipstick, which embarrassed him a little. His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down, but his eyes remained calm.

“I remember what you said earlier, and I think you were right,” he said.

“We’ve been trying to make it work for a long time, but it turns out we’re not right for each other. On the surface, we seem to be working, but in reality there are too many unresolved issues.” Hearing those words sapped my energy as I dropped back in my seat.

He unbuttoned one of the buttons on his shirt and pulled out the pack of cigarettes, but realized it was empty.

Annoyed, he crumpled the pack, leaned back in the seat, pressed his lips together and was silent for a moment.

“Your father died for my father, and I sent my father to jail to get justice for you. Isn’t it strange that we’re still together after something like this happened? Eveline, I don’t want to fool myself anymore.”
