Chapter 59:

Whatsapp tone from my phone interrupted our intimate atmosphere. As soon as I picked up the phone, Derek immediately picked it up.

Feeling a little nervous, I reached out to snatch it from him. “Give it back.”

Derek picked up the phone, looked at the screen and muttered, “Seagull?”.

Not a second later, he opened my Whatsapp profile. “A fish that admires a seagull? What the hell does that name mean?” he asked with a chuckle.

I felt very embarrassed when he read it.

Truth be told, the reason I called my account that name was because of how grateful I felt to Seagull. But now that Derek was saying it out loud, I realized how embarrassing it was.

After I picked up the phone from him, he asked me nonchalantly, “Why are you so nervous, who’s Seagull?”

“Just a friend.”

He didn’t ask any other questions and I didn’t explain who Seagull was.

To tell the truth, I had no idea who the man was.

I was probably still exhausted. After a while, I heard his steady breathing, and I was the one who felt uneasy. I could only hear his breathing and heartbeat.

What we did before was crazy. And quite exciting, to say the least.

It was then that I found myself, little by little, obsessed with him. The next morning, when I got up, Derek was still sleeping.

As soon as I went downstairs, the Whatsapp tone rang again. He seemed to have received a friend request. The username of the account was “A cat who likes to eat fish.”

I read the account profile and saw nothing suspicious, so I accepted the friend request.

A moment later, the account sent me a message. “You stupid little fish, don’t always look at the seagull in the sky. You should be careful not to get eaten by the cat that has been lusting after you for a long time.”

After reading it, I let out a chuckle. When I pictured Derek lying in bed and texting me, I thought it was incredibly sweet.

“How can a cat eat a cute fish like me,” I replied. “Well, I won’t eat you. But I will sleep with you,” he replied.

I blushed at his response. Derek’s grandfather happened to come out of the kitchen at that moment. Quickly, I put my phone away as if I were hiding a crime.

After breakfast, Derek asked me to accompany him to a clinic in town to change the dressing on his wound.

Once we arrived, I wanted to get out of the car to go in with him, but he told me to wait in the car.

Twenty minutes later, he finally came out of the clinic.

After getting into the car, he did not start it right away. Instead, he lit a cigarette, took a few puffs, and pulled a box of medicine out of his pocket.

As soon as I saw what the medicine was, my heart shrank.

Suddenly, Derek pinched my cheek and smiled, “Why do you look so disappointed, do you think I’m irresponsible or something?”. Then why did you buy the box of birth control pills? My eyes filled with sadness as I stared at him.

Suddenly, he leaned over and wrapped his arms around my neck. An instant later, our foreheads were pressed against each other.

“Listen, it’s not that I’m being an irresponsible husband. I’m doing it for you. I respect your decision to take the pills or not. If you ever get pregnant, don’t even think of having an abortion. A woman’s health cannot withstand repeated torture,” she commented.

I was very touched by her concern.

In such a short time, I experienced a roller coaster of emotions.

He soon released me and rolled down the windows. As he threw down the box of medicine, he asked me, “Did you just think of me as scum? Did it make you want to leave me?”

I felt guilty about the question, and didn’t dare give him a look.

Suddenly, he laughed again. The moment I turned my head, I was taken by surprise when he grabbed me by the back of the neck and kissed me.

He gave me a passionate French kiss. A moment later, he loosened his grip as a mischievous smile appeared on his lips. “Sooner or later, I’m going to make it so you can’t leave me.” Then he started the car. For some reason, his words left me uneasy.

He was right. I really couldn’t leave him.

Over the next few days, Derek taught me all kinds of activities. He took me fishing, mountain climbing and taught me how to get in touch with Mother Nature.

At first, I would sit quietly beside him while he fished. Later, he worried that I would get bored, so he taught me to fish. He always laughed at how clumsy I was. But after giving me a good scolding, he would patiently teach me the proper techniques. I had never felt so relaxed. I had no idea why, but I still enjoyed my time at the lake, even if I didn’t catch a single fish.

When he took me up the mountain, I tried to keep up with him, but he was too strong. It only took a few minutes up the mountain to tire me out. I could hardly catch my breath. Fortunately, he didn’t laugh at me again. Instead, he waited patiently and held my hand until we reached the top of the mountain.

Once at the top, I received a call from Louise. I told her I was in Qinben with Derek. She was very surprised, and then joked that it was time for me to join her family.

I glanced over at Derek and found him sitting on a rock and smoking. The faint breeze was blowing through his hair, making him look like he had stepped straight out of a painting.

After climbing up the mountain, my legs grew weak. And by the time we got down, my legs were practically on the verge of collapse. Suddenly, Derek carried me on his back without a word.

His back was broad and warm and made me feel safe and comfortable.

These last few days made me feel like I was going back to a time when I was really looking forward to holding hands with a man. This happiness gripped me and dispelled the shadows of my past.
