Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 95
Chapter 95:
As I left work and the hospital, I heard someone calling my name. I walked toward the person calling my name and saw Timmy.
“Ma’am, Mr. Sullivan is concerned right now, so he asked me to pick you up after work,” he said.
I grimaced. If he was so busy, why did he keep calling the emergency phone? Did he even have time to talk to me?
Despite my anger, I got into the car. Once inside, Derek texted me.
“Honey, I have an important meeting right now, so I might be home a little late. Wait for me, okay? I’ll be back no matter how late it is.”
I could sense her sincerity just from this message alone. I had no idea what kind of explanation he would give me. It made me wonder if he would finally tell me the truth or just keep weaving another web of deceit.
When I got back to the villa, I sat on the couch, waiting for him. I wasn’t in the mood to cook right now, and I left the lights off. About an hour later, dusk had fallen, but he still wasn’t home.
Just as I began to feel restless, the doorbell suddenly rang.
Hadn’t he brought a key?
When I went to open the door, I was stunned.
The person at the door was none other than Derek’s father, Gifford Sullivan.
The first time we met, my only impression of this man was how stern he was.
I knew he wasn’t very happy with me.
In my opinion, Derek had no reason to doubt the legitimacy of his relationship with Gifford. He seemed to have inherited his good looks from his father. And whenever he got serious, he gave off a daunting pressure that could overcome the people around him, much like his father did.
At the moment, Gifford wasn’t saying anything. He merely stared at me from head to toe, but it was enough to humble me.
“Dad,” I uttered, simply out of politeness and respect.

He averted his gaze from me and stepped forward. I had to make way for him so I wouldn’t bump into him.
“Don’t call me ‘daddy.’ I will not accept you as my daughter-in-law, since you married my son without my approval.”
Despite the calmness in his voice, I was stunned.
When I finally managed to pull myself together, he had already sat down on the sofa.
As he looked around, examining the place, it made me think that maybe this was the first time he had ever come here.
As terrible as my relationship with Derek was at the time, I was still his wife. And even if Gifford refused to acknowledge me, I couldn’t let him feel abandoned in Derek’s house.
So, I poured him a glass of water and carefully placed it in front of him. However, I didn’t dare call him ‘daddy’ again. “Please have some water, Sir,” I said.
He raised his head, examining my face again. Feeling his oppressive gaze, I lowered my head like a person awaiting the verdict of his trial.
“How much do you want?” he asked.
Stunned by the question, I looked back at him and asked, “What, what do you mean?”
Slowly, he lit a cigarette, showing his undisguised contempt for me.
“Eveline Stone, twenty-six years old, nursing graduate of Sousen College of Medicine, School of Medicine. After graduating, she worked as a nurse for Virtue.
Your ex-husband was a physician in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Virtue Hospital, but he was laid off not long ago,” Gifford said.
As I looked at him in surprise, I asked him another question. “Did you have me investigated?”.
After taking a puff on his cigarette, he laughed. “Your father was a truck driver, but he died in a car accident more than a decade ago. Your mother, as a result of the accident, was disabled. She died in Virtue Hospital in June of this year. You have been poor since you were a child, so you probably know how important money is. To survive, poor people like you often chase money.”
She was right. The rich wanted to live a lavish life, but poor people like me just wanted to survive.
But that didn’t necessarily mean we earned money by hook or by crook. Even if we were poor, we had pride and dignity.
“Do you think I married Derek for his money?” I asked, bearing the pain in my heart.
Gifford let out a laugh, as if he had heard something absurd.
“So, if not for money, you mean you married him for love? Miss Stone, you are not only from a poor family, you are also a divorced woman. But I’m not looking down on you or anything. Derek hasn’t been close to any woman for years, but here he is suddenly in a relationship with you. That just means you’re not that simple.”
I couldn’t help but laugh at his comment. “You think I’m trying to cheat on your son?”
Gifford leaned back on the couch and seemed to be savoring his cigarette. “Maybe you’re not just after his money, but other goals as well. Derek is a businessman, and doing business is akin to fighting on a battlefield. Even if he doesn’t like me meddling in his business, he is still my son. I will not allow people with ulterior motives to stay by his side.”
I scoffed at him and replied, “You have already condemned me for a crime I did not commit! I can tell you that no matter how hard I try to explain myself, you will never believe me.”
