Chapter 99:

I turned my head and saw Aaron leaning against the door frame with his hands in his pockets, smiling at me.

He was wearing a doctor’s coat. It would be unfair to say that his choice of clothing made him look good, because Aaron looked handsome even in his doctor’s coat.

“You know Dr. Hudson?” Brenna looked at me and looked back at Aaron with wide eyes.

Aaron walked over to me and smiled, “Yes.”

Brenna reminded me to get a good night’s rest and went back to work. Aaron pulled out a chair and sat down next to the bed.

“Don’t tell Derek,” I said as the thought suddenly crossed my mind.

Aaron gave me a slight smile. “I knew you wouldn’t want me to tell him, so I didn’t. Besides, he’s on a business trip. It would take him a couple of days to get back.”

I nodded in understanding. No wonder Derek told me he wouldn’t bother me for a few days.

Aaron picked up the diagnostic report, flipped through the pages and put it back on the table.

“Eveline, I didn’t expect you to greet me in such a special way.”

The nurses had been deliberately passing through the room since he had arrived there.

Thinking about what the nurse said earlier, I smiled bitterly. “I had no intention of doing that. Now, all the women at Wonder Hospital consider me their enemy. You’d better stay away from me. Otherwise, these women would attack me. I’ll end up having a bad time.

Y…” I tried to sit up. “I don’t think I should stay in the hospital. It’s a waste of time and medical resources.”

Aaron pressed his hand on my shoulder and stopped me. “I recommend you stay here a few more days. You are too weak. Health is one’s most valuable asset, and you have to take care of it. You are a patient now. You have to listen to your doctor.

He kept trying to convince me to stay in the hospital for a few more days. I had no choice but to listen to him.

After Aaron left, I rested on the bed and looked out the window. It was dark and quiet pervaded the room.

I didn’t want to think about what had happened between Derek and me. I hoped the medicine would help me sleep. As expected, my eyes became heavy and I fell asleep.

When I opened my eyes again, it was still dark. A strong smell of alcohol hung in the air. I let out a startled gasp when I saw the familiar figure standing at the head of the bed.

“What…what are you doing here?” I instinctively cringed. My heart was thudding in my chest.

“I’ve come to see you.” The lights in the living room were off. The dim light from the hallway illuminated Shane’s face.

The darkness of the place and the eerie sight of the man brought back memories of the night in Tonyin. I felt my heart racing in my chest.

“Eveline, are you afraid of me?” Shane’s voice, echoing in the silent room, sent a shiver down my spine.

I wondered if he would do something else crazy because Derek had cheated on him so badly.

I braced myself and became more alert. “Obviously, I would be scared of the person who was cruel enough to kill his own son.” Shane and I were alone in the room. Besides, I was drunk. I didn’t want to say anything extreme and upset him.

Shane slowly dropped into the chair next to the bed. He rubbed his forehead and sighed in frustration.

“Actually, I regret it too.”

Regret? Did I hear wrong? I sneered at him.

While his brief marriage to Vivien had been exciting, it had also made him pay a heavy price. But I would never forgive him for all he had done to marry her.

“But regret doesn’t change anything,” I said coldly. Shane was silent for a while. Then he pulled something out of the pocket of his white coat.

“I found this at home a few days ago.” It was the journal I had kept when I was pregnant. I was anxiously awaiting my son and paid immense attention and care to my diet, my sleep, and my medication.

“Eveline, you loved that child very much, didn’t you?”. Bile rose in my throat-how dare she mention the child now?

“You still carry me in your heart, don’t you? I can’t believe you fell in love with someone else so soon,” he said, suddenly grabbing my hand.

I knew his marriage to Vivien had frustrated him. He was desperate to regain his self-esteem as a man by coming back to me.

Just as I was about to unclasp his hand, I accidentally saw a shadow on the other side of the door.

Seeing that, I didn’t try to break free and continued to endure his vicious grip.
