CEO's Tears Over Pregnancy Test Discovery -
Chapter 1581
Lucas Corporation appeared to be running as smoothly as ever, showing no signs of turmoil despite the recent rumors. Jamie arrived at the reception desk and asked to see Ben.
The receptionist raised an eyebrow at the mention of Ben's name and smiled slightly. "He's a top-tier lawyer in Birkham now. If you're looking for him, shouldn't you be at his law firm rather than here at Lucas Corporation?" "He's not here? Did he say when he'd be back?" Jamie was momentarily stunned. She had just spoken to him on the phone. Where could he have gone at such a critical time?
The receptionist shook her head apologetically. "I'm sorry, I'm not privy to Mr. Lucas's schedule. If you'd like, you could try calling him directly."
Jamie sighed, unwilling to trouble the receptionist further. She was about to leave when the receptionist called after her.
"Wait a moment. Are you Miss Lewis?"
Caught off guard, Jamie hesitated. "Yes, I am. Why?"
The receptionist looked a bit uncertain, realizing she hadn't asked for Jamie's identity earlier. "Mr. Lucas left instructions that if Miss Lewis came by, she could wait for him in his office." "So, he'll be back soon?"
Jamie thought it over for a moment, then decided to stay and wait. She wanted to check on Ben and see if there was anything she could do to help.
That wait stretched into two hours.
When Ben finally returned after meeting with a client, Jamie had fallen asleep on the office sofa. Her soft hair was slightly messy, and the exhaustion on her face was evident. Though Ben looked equally tired, his gaze softened the moment he saw her.
He instinctively moved quietly, careful not to disturb her.
Jamie stirred in her sleep, vaguely sensing someone near her. The touch was light, almost ticklish. She mumbled and swatted the air, muttering, "Charlie, don't mess with me." A soft chuckle made her jolt awake.
Opening her eyes, she found Ben's face inches from hers. Up close, his sharp, handsome features were even more striking.
"I didn't want to wake you. You
seemed so tired. There's a rest area over there if you'd like to sleep a little longer," Ben said casually, gesturing toward the nearby room as he straightened back up.
Jamie flushed with embarrassment. It was absurd for her to come here to check on him, only to end up falling asleep in his office.
"No need, I'm already up," she said hurriedly, sitting up and smoothing her hair.
Ben didn't comment on her flustered state.
His own fatigue was evident in the faint shadows under his eyes. Seeing this, Jamie hesitated before asking, "You haven't been sleeping well lately, have you?"
"Not really. There's a project at Lucas Corporation I've been overseeing," Ben said lightly, brushing it off as nothing.
In reality, the situation was far from simple. Lucas Corporation had recently acquired a plot of land, only to face resistance from a group of holdout residents refusing to relocate.
Negotiations had broken down
multiple times, and during one
particularly tense confrontation, an
elderly resident had suffered a heart attack. Though the individual recovered, tensions escalated further, with accusations flying that Lucas Corporation was to blame.
It was a headache for the company but just another part of Ben's daily responsibilities.
Adding to the burden were the
recent ontine scandals, though he
had no intention of burdening Jamie with such matters. His tone was steady as he reassured her, 'll handle everything."
Jamie didn't press further, sensing his reluctance to share more.
Instead, she shifted the topic. "I've thought about your suggestion..."
"You've decided to work with me?" Ben's gaze sharpened, his deep, dark eyes locking onto hers, making it hard for her to maintain eye contact.
After a brief hesitation, Jamie nodded. "The terms you offered are hard to turn down. I don't see a reason to refuse."
