Jamie had originally come with the intention of helping Ben in some small way. She hadn't planned on agreeing to his job offer so quickly, but seeing his exhaustion had changed her mind. That evening, Ben invited her to dinner.

Jamie wanted to decline, but Ben cut her off. "Consider it a celebration for your new position. There's a restaurant I think you'd like. We could pick up Charlie and bring him along." At the mention of Charlie, Jamie couldn't replace a reason to refuse.

Charlie rarely got to go out, and Jamie often felt guilty about that. She always wanted to make it up to him, even in small ways.

Ben drove them back to pick up Charlie, who had been at home with the helper. Since the helper hadn't started dinner yet, Jamie told her there was no need.

When Charlie heard they were going out for dinner, he was thrilled. "Mommy, where are we going? Can we have burgers?"

Jamie started to say no, but seeing the excitement in his bright eyes, she changed her answer. "Okay, whatever you want."

Charlie cheered, and his happiness brought an involuntary smile to Jamie's face. She turned to Ben apologetically. "Sorry, I guess we won't be going to the restaurant you suggested..." Before she could finish, Ben was already instructing the driver. "Find a good burger joint." Then he glanced at her. "What were you saying?"

"Nothing," Jamie murmured, lowering her gaze as her heart skipped a beat.

They arrived at a casual diner. Unlike the greasy fast-food spots Jamie had imagined, this place was well-decorated and clean with a modern vibe.

Jamie felt relieved. It wasn't that she had an issue with burgers, but she wanted to make sure the place was clean and family-friendly, especially with Charlie along.

When the food came, Jamie and Ben ate only sparingly, letting Charlie enjoy most of it. He devoured his meal with such enthusiasm that ketchup smeared across his cheeks.

Jamie grabbed a napkin and carefully wiped his mouth. "Look at you! You've got it all over your face."

"Mommy, help me clean up!" Charlie said cheerfully, holding up a greasy onion ring to Ben.

Jamie moved to stop him, but it was too late.

She waited for Ben to refuse, but to her surprise, he paused for a moment and then took the onion ring. "Is this for me, Charlie?" Charlie nodded enthusiastically.

Ben placed the onion ring on his

plate, then used his utensils to eat it.

Even while eating something so x

casual, he maintained a natural elegance.

Jamie tried to hide her surprise and focused on cleaning Charlie's hands and face. "Your Uncle Ben doesn't usually eat things like this. Don't give him too much, okay?" she said

softly, worried about Ben's digestion.

Charlie tilted his head, confused by her comment.

Just then, Ben spoke in a calm tone. "It's fine. I can eat it, as long as it's from Charlie."

His words reassured Charlie immediately, erasing any doubts.

Jamie felt a complex mix of emotions but chose to say nothing, simply glancing at Ben before looking away.

On the way home, Charlie finally grew quiet, exhausted from playing.

After getting him to sleep, Jamie turned to Ben. "You don't have to spoil Charlie like that. He's used to my strict rules, and indulging him too much isn't good for a child."

Ben met her gaze seriously. "I'm just trying to make up for what he's missed in the past."

Jamie was at a loss for words.

Her heart raced uncontrollably again, and she quickly averted her eyes, only to notice her phone lighting up with a new message.

The moment she read it, her eyes widened in shock. Acting on instinct, she shouted, "Quick, turn the wheel!"

The driver froze for a second but followed her command without hesitation.
