The car skidded to a halt, narrowly avoiding disaster.

Before the stunned driver could process what had just happened, a large, out-of-control truck barreled through the intersection ahead.

The truck was moving too fast to stop, flipping over and sliding across the road, smashing into several vehicles in its path.

The screeching metal and shattering glass filled the air, leaving the driver visibly shaken. Had it not been for Jamie's timely warning, the consequences could have been catastrophic.

Ben frowned and glanced at Jamie, who was pale with fear. He wanted to ask her something but knew now wasn't the time. "Turn around and take another route," he instructed the driver. It took a moment for the driver to regain his composure before restarting the car and pulling away.

Not long after they left, the scene was surrounded by police vehicles. Traffic on that road came to a standstill as officers began redirecting cars.

The drive home was smooth, but this time the driver was hyper-alert, unwilling to take any chances. Thankfully, they encountered no further incidents.

Back at home, Jamie was relieved that Charlie had been asleep throughout the ordeal. At least he hadn't witnessed the terrifying scene. It would have been too much for a child's mind to handle. Her own heart was still racing as she carried Charlie to his bed, tucked him in, and quietly closed the door.

She walked into the living room, poured herself a glass of water, and sat down. "That accident wasn't random. It was aimed at us," she said firmly.

Ben's eyes narrowed.

Jamie pulled out her phone and showed him the message she had received moments before the truck appeared. "I happened to glance at this text and it said there would be an out-of-control vehicle." "Was this from Winnie?" Ben asked, their voices overlapping.

After a brief pause, Jamie spoke first. "Yes, it's her number. I've tried contacting her multiple times before, but I couldn't reach her. I didn't expect her to send something now."

Her chest tightened as she spoke. She hadn't seen Winnie in so long, didn't know her current situation, and had no idea what her life was like now.

She desperately wanted to know how Winnie was doing.

Seeing the sadness in Jamie's eyes, Ben immediately understood that she was thinking about Winnie again. He reached out and held her hand gently. "Don't think about it too much. If she was able to send you that text, it means she's safe for now." Jamie found some comfort in his words and nodded slightly.

But her mind quickly shifted to a new worry which was the person lurking in the shadows.

Whoever this person was, they had targeted them multiple times. What was their goal?

Ben was equally concerned. But more than worrying about himself, his fear was that the target might actually be Jamie.

"It's not safe for you to stay here alone," he said firmly. "Why don't you move in with me? That way, I can look after you and Charlie better."

"But-"

"Charlie's safety comes first."

His resolute tone cut off any further

argument. Jamie hesitated, her

thoughts conflicted. On one hand, she wanted to refuse, but on the other, she knew he was right. When it came to Charlie's safety, there was no question where her priorities lay.

She finally replied, "I'll think about it. Even if I agree, I'll need time to pack."

Ben's expression softened, and he agreed readily, much to her surprise.

Jamie couldn't help but feel like she was falling into a carefully set trap.

The next morning, Jamie was up early to get Charlie ready for his first day at preschool.

No matter how much she prepared, she couldn't shake her nerves. While helping him get dressed, she couldn't stop herself from saying, "If you feel unwell at all, make sure to tell Miss Georgia right away, okay?"

Miss Georgia was Charlie's homeroom teacher.

Although Jamie hadn't met her in person yet, they had spoken over video calls, and Jamie had a good impression of her. She had also explained Charlie's condition, and Miss Georgia had assured her that she would take good care of him.

Jamie smiled as she helped him into his coat, making him look like a chubby little peanut. "She's your teacher. Be sure to get along well with your classmates too, okay?"

"Miss Georgia?" Charlie tilted his head curiously.
