The man lunged forward, grabbing Jamie's wrist before she could fully evade him. Pain shot through her arm as his grip tightened. "What do you think you're doing?" she demanded, her other hand clutching her phone as she frantically dialed for help.

But the man had anticipated her move. He snatched the phone from her hand and slammed it to the ground with a loud crack.

"Go ahead, try calling the cops now," he sneered, his voice dripping with menace.

Not far away, the assistant witnessed the entire scene. Panicked, he shouted, "Jamie, hold on! I'm coming!"

"Don't come over!" Jamie yelled back sharply, stopping him in his tracks.

She was already surrounded. The last thing she wanted was to drag someone else into this dangerous situation.

The assistant froze, torn between his urge to help and her firm warning. He could do nothing but pace nervously like a trapped animal, his anxiety palpable.

The man, noticing Jamie's interaction with the assistant, narrowed his eyes and smirked. "So, you're with Lucas Corporation, huh? Makes sense. I figured you were one of their people. And Ben himself sent you? A pretty face like yours... he must not care what happens to you."

His words were met with laughter from the mob, their jeers filled with vile amusement.

Jamie remained calm, her voice steady. "So, you know Ben?"

Despite the throbbing pain in her wrist, she stayed focused. If they knew Ben, it confirmed her suspicion that this wasn't a random incident. It was a deliberate attack against Lucas Corporation. What she still didn't know was who was pulling the strings behind the scenes. The man's expression darkened, and his grip on her wrist tightened further. "Oh, so you're trying to get me to talk, huh?"

Though her attempt to extract information failed, Jamie wasn't discouraged. With her free hand, she quickly reached into her bag and pulled out a can of pepper spray. In one swift motion, she aimed and sprayed directly into the man's eyes.

He let out a bloodcurdling scream, releasing her wrist as he stumbled back, clawing at his face.

Blinded and furious, he yelled, "You stupid woman! When I catch you, you're dead!"

But Jamie didn't stick around. Like a slippery eel, she darted away, sprinting toward the car.

Behind her, the mob gave chase, their shouts growing louder. She barely managed to reach the vehicle, slamming the door shut as they caught up.

The assistant scrambled to lock the doors, but the mob began smashing the windows with shovels and sticks. The deafening sound of metal striking glass filled the air.

Jamie's heart pounded wildly as she

realized the gravity of their situation. These people didn't care about the law or morality. They were operating on rage alone.

"Are you okay? Let's get out of here!" the assistant shouted, fumbling with the ignition.

Before they could drive away, one of the windows gave out under the relentless assault, shattering into pieces. Glass shards flew into the car, and Jamie instinctively ducked with a gasp. en Ebookex

The sharp edge of a shovel slammed into the seat where she had been sitting just moments before.

"If I hadn't moved..." she whispered, horrified at the thought.

"These people are insane! They don't even see us as human!" the assistant shouted, his voice shaking with anger and frustration.

Their car was surrounded, leaving them no way out. Trapped, Jamie felt like they were stranded on an isolated island, completely cut off from help.

Just when she thought all hope was lost, the mob suddenly began to disperse. In the distance, the sound of police sirens pierced the air.

Jamie staggered out of the car, her legs shaky beneath her.

Before she could fall, a pair of strong arms caught her.

Ben.

His cool embrace carried a faint, familiar scent, calming her frayed nerves.

"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice tight with concern.

Jamie heard the worry in his tone and felt her chest tighten. She struggled to replace her voice. "Why... why are you here?"

On the way over, the assistant had told her that Ben was swamped with work and likely wouldn't be able to

come. She had believed it, especially after seeing how exhausted he had looked the day before.
