Chasing My Rejected Luna -
Chapter 148
TEGAN'S P.O.V
Everyone was talking at once and I couldn't concentrate on the pressing matter.
"What do you mean he is gone?" Lilyanna's powerful voice asked, overshadowing everyone else in the room.
"She means she couldn't save him," Trystan replied instead.
My heart broke a little more at his truthful words. Because he was right, I couldn't.
"How... I don't understand, you have powers. How did you just let him slip from your hands?" Her questions were eating away at me one at a time.
I have already asked myself these questions a dozen times over. How, why, what if, what could I have done differently? But it all led to the same answer, I just couldn't. And now he was not here and there was nothing I could do to change that fact. "It wasn't her fault. She doesn't know how to draw her powers from herself yet." Trystan continued to defend me.
"What does that have anything to do with saving my son?" Lilyanna asked as the tears welled in her eyes, making my heart ache even more.
"She doesn't know how to use her powers when she has her hands full." He countered defensively. "She is new to this, she tried her best."
"Well, it wasn't good enough." She muttered so low that if we weren't wolves, we wouldn't have heard.
My heart was already drowning with sorrow along with guilt. Now I had even more weight on my shoulders.
"I'm sorry..." I finally said while looking at the ground in shame.
"Some powerful wolf you are." Lilyanna's angry voice said as she stormed out of the room.
"Don't listen to her, it's just the grief talking, she doesn't mean it."
"She does and I get it. It was my fault. He wouldn't have been there if it weren't for me. Therefore, she has every right to blame me."
"Not true. He is a grown man who can make his own decisions. He knew what he signed up for, hell she knew too." Helena spat out angrily, making Trystan look at her while biting his lip.
I felt like someone was standing on my chest. I was so defeated and the real battle hadn't even begun. How was I supposed to make it to the end when I couldn't even pull myself together now?
"Give yourself some time," Trystan said, making me look up at him in confusion since I hadn't said anything out loud. Helena's surprised face looked back and forth between us.
Even while I was being consumed in my grief, I hadn't missed the awkwardness that was happening between the two of them. They were acting as if they knew one another but didn't want to acknowledge it.
"Did I forget to mention I can hear people's inner thoughts?" He asked with a little laugh.
I looked over at Helena as she bit her lip and looked away. What was going on with her?
"Stay out of my head!" I then demanded angrily as I looked at him.
"How else am I supposed to help you successfully take down the most powerful man if you won't talk to me? The grief will only cloud your judgment and mess with your powers. I understand you're in pain but you need to push on if we want to beat him." "Is it such a bad thing if we don't?"
"Do you even hear yourself?" Helena asked next.
"Loud and clear," I said as I stood up. "And I see no point, we all are going to die anyway."
"That is no way of thinking. We can do this!" Helena nearly screamed.
"Not if Helga doesn't show. Hell even if she does show up, if she still doesn't help us, then what? We were stupid to think we could take him on, we will never defeat him."
"Did someone say my name?" A new voice I'd never heard said from the doorway. "Ugh, it's you bunch again. How many times do I have to decline before you dense people take no for an answer?"
"Is that any way to speak to an old friend?" Trystan said as he approached her.
Her mere presence sent me back in time when Liam tried to kill me. She looked just as heartless and cruel as that day. She had no care in her eyes. It was as if she had no humanity left.
"What are you doing with these people?" She asked as he kissed both of her cheeks, making Darion let out a menacing growl.
"Oh, down dog." Helga then said in response.
What was I missing here? Had they already been acquainted, and if so, why was Darion acting so familiar and protective? Unless...
"Are you two mates?" I asked, looking between them.
"I refuse to allow the universe to tell me who I have to be with. So no dear, I have no mate. I'm not even a wolf, I am a Witch. I will be with whoever, whenever. But never will I bow down to such a thing." Her cold voice responded.
I looked over to Darion who looked completely broken by her words.
"So... why am I here?" She then asked, looking at Trystan.
"Because you're going to help close the gate as the prophecy says."
"I already declined that offer. Thanks though." She then said with a laugh.
"I wasn't asking, Helga."
"And who do you think you are, demanding me to go against your father?"
"Because we both know what I have. If you choose not to help, I'll destroy it without a second thought."
"You wouldn't!"
"Try me, Helga."
The room became hostile and uncomfortable. I hope he knew what he was doing. Blackmailing a powerful witch wasn't the smartest thing. But then again, if it got her to help, then fuck it.
"Fine. When do we do this?" She then said, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Tonight. It is the full moon, we can use that to harvest more power between the four of us. Once the moon is at its fullest we will begin the ritual."
"Your father is going to kill us."
"Not if I kill him first." He replied, making Helga erupt in a fit of laughter.
"I'd love to see the day when you out of anyone kill Iblis. It would be a day to remember." She said before looking at me. "And here I thought that they wouldn't be able to save you. You lost a lot of blood, but appears you're a fighter, like your mother. Isn't that right, Trystan?" She said, making me raise my eyebrows in response.
"Shut up, Helga." He demanded angrily.
"What does that mean?" I asked curiously.
"Oh, did you not know?" She asked, looking between Trystan and me.
"Helga, stop!" Trystan's voice spat out, dangerously low.
"Or what? Gonna bite me with those oh-so-sharp wolf teeth?" She asked but her voice had humor lingering within it. "Come on Trystan, they should know who is fighting on their side after all." She said with a crooked smile.
"What is she talking about? What does Marci have to do with anything?" I asked looking at Trystan for answers.
"Nothing to do with this situation. Everything to do with what kind of person you're choosing to trust." She replied as she took a seat.
"I already saw his memories," I replied, knowing he was angry and hurt inside.
"I bet you didn't make it to the best one."
"Helga..." Trystan said threateningly.
I looked between them before she spoke again.
"The memory where your dear ole brother ruined your mother's mind and made her into a shell of a person." She said with a smile.
"You're the reason she is the way she is?" I asked, looking at him, pain in my voice.
Trystan quickly looked to the ground before once again meeting my eyes.
"We don't have time for this, the sun is setting which means the moon will be out soon. We have to close that gate. Whether you trust me or not, I am your only hope."
He wasn't wrong, I did need him to close the gate. But that doesn't stop my mind from thinking about the fact that he was the one who tortured her to the point of her no longer being herself. How was I supposed to just move on from that fact?
