Chasing My Rejected Luna -
Chapter 157
EZRA'S
P.O.V
As I sat there trying to process the loss of my mother, I could hear the sounds of screaming in the distance. One voice stood out more than the rest. I knew this was no time to mourn. As an Alpha, I was taught to put my emotions to the side during a time like this and deal with the problem at hand. As much as I'd rather get lost in my emotions, I knew better. If I let my guard down anymore than I already have, then I could die or worse, everyone could die. Just because I wanted to break down doesn't mean that it was the time or place. The battle still goes on without you.
"WIDOW!" I heard the voice of my mate scream.
She was nearby and it sounded like she might need my help. I looked down at my mother's face one more time before laying her body softly on the ground. If we live through this war, I will be coming back to get her. She deserves to be laid to rest next to my father. I wasn't sure why Tegan was screaming widow, but the urgency in her voice led me to believe something was wrong. When she finally came into view, she and Lucy were fighting. Once I realized that they were against one another, I took off into a sprint. The only lucky part about this, was that they were matched in abilities. One shouldn't be able to overpower the other, unless a mistake is made. However, Lucy had been working for Iblis for quite some time, her kill count using her gifts was way higher than Tegan's, which worried me. I don't understand why they turned on one another. Especially in a time like this when the Tribal Wolves were attacking us. What the hell did I miss? What happened?
"DON'T KILL HER, T! SHE ISN'T HERSELF!"
I looked over to see Fredrick on the ground clutching his chest while panting. Why would Tegan kill Lucy? Hell, why would he even say that Lucy wasn't herself? "LUCY, this isn't you!" Tegan screamed at Lucy while she shot rays from her hands attacking her, while she dodged them tirelessly.
"The Lucy you seek is currently not available, please try again later." Lucy's voice came out in a tone that I'd never heard before. It sounded purely evil. But also really fake, as if she were mimicking the automated error voice when you call the wrong number. "Hmm that won't work though, will it?" She then asked Tegan when she didn't speak.
"He is controlling your mind, this isn't you."
"WRONG. I will give you one more guess. If you're right, you get to be free. But if you're wrong, well let's just say you will lose more than just your life." Lucy said as she circled Tegan. Her circular movements made it seem as if Tegan was her prey. "Don't let him control you like he did me." Tegan begged instead of answering.
"Nope, the answer was because there wouldn't be a later."
She then used one of her gifts to uproot the tree roots to entangle Tegan's legs, holding her in place.
"All you had to do was play along, to humor me a little. Now you are making me do it. This is on you." Lucy said to Tegan.
I suddenly felt a tightness around my ankles which immediately started to squeeze around my legs. I looked down to also see the trees uprooted from the ground, entangling me as well.
"Sorry Ez, your mate made me do it. But don't worry, the pop of your body will be fast. Kind of like popping a pimple. However, I prefer not to watch. I'll let Tegan witness it for us all." Lucy said as she walked away.
I could feel crunching in my body as the roots made their way up it. I started hitting the tree limbs relentlessly with the blade my mother gave me. It recoiled slightly before starting all over again. I cut through each one but for every root I broke, more seemed to appear. It was a never ending battle. But I wasn't one to give up. I looked over to Tegan as she struggled against her own roots. They had made their way up one of her arms. I could sense how terrified she was through our mate bond. Even though I was also scared, I knew I had to protect her. So, I used our mate bond to try my best to soothe her. Her eyes popped up to meet mine as if a new sense of purpose hit.
"Ezra, I'm going to get us out of here!" She yelled from across the path while I continued to hit the roots with my blade. Somehow, the roots were only increasingly growing with every hit. The more I fought against them, the harder they squeezed. "STOP FIGHTING THEM! THE MORE YOU MOVE, THE MORE THEY DO!" Tegan yelled.
Instantly my body froze and it was as if instantaneously the roots came to a stop too.
"It took me a minute to realize why I couldn't defeat these damn things. When nothing I was doing helped, I thought more about plants when I remembered reading about this special plant in one of the books your mom gave me during my Queen's studies." My heart clenched at the mention of my mother. But I tried focusing back on what she was saying.
"It's called the Devil's Snare, which is a magical plant. I remember that it said that it only grows in locations where the under-world has touched the upper-world. Seeing how this is the location of the gates of hell, it makes sense for it to be growing in the ground here. It's said that it has the ability to constrict or strangle anything in its surrounding environment that moves or threatens it. So, if you stop moving, it does too, because it no longer feels threatened." "How do we get out of it if we can't move?" I asked, concerned.
It had stopped moving all together. Which meant that it wasn't releasing us just as it wasn't tightening.
"Ugh! I can't remember!" She screamed, frustrated. "Out of all the things to forget, I forget what will free us! But ask me where the placement of dining utensils goes and I could do it blindfolded!"
I laughed at her flustered face. It was an awful situation for us to be in. But even in one of our darkest moments, her face still brought out the light in the situation. Wait, that's it!
"IT'S LIGHT!" I screamed out excitedly. Accidentally moving my body, making the Devil's Snare constrict as well.
"How did I not remember that! Of course it is!" Tegan yelled back as she began to chant under her breath.
Suddenly, her body shined bright. It reminded me of the night under the moon when she received her gifts from the Moon Goddess.
The brightness shot off her body as it surrounded us both. The Devil's Snare shrieked as it recoiled off of our bodies, slithering back inside of the ground.
"You did it." I breathed out as I darted across the path, scooping her up in my arms.
"No, we did it." She said, smiling brightly back at me. "But it's not over. Lucy is under a spell and is set on killing Fredrick. We have to stop her."
"What about all the attacking Tribal Wolves?" I asked as I looked around at the chaos.
"Once Fredrick is safe, we will take them all down. I know what to do now.". She replied with a smile.
I hope she has a good plan. Because with every opponent we've managed to defeat, another showed up in its place. It was beginning to quickly wear us out. "So what's the plan?" I asked as we walked in the direction Lucy had gone.
She then turned to look at me with a crooked smile plastered across her face, making her look mischievous yet sexy all at the same time.
"We win this shit." She answered before turning back to the pathway.
Sounded like a plan to me. Let's just hope what she has planned actually works.
