Chapter 306:

“It doesn’t matter, Mom. We’ll own the Johns Group soon. We can make that money back in a single day,” Courtney said, smiling confidently.

Sarai pondered for a moment and then nodded in agreement.

Simultaneously, she felt the stark contrast between her lifestyle and Elaine’s. She had always believed she lived well, but today she realized just how vast the gap was between her life and Elaine’s!

She had to carefully budget for new clothes, whereas Elaine could splurge without a second thought. Sarai was filled with envy and resentment.

In fact, she and Elaine were distant cousins. Sarai had always seen herself as superior and had once hoped to marry Glenn. However, Glenn fell in love with Elaine instead.

At that moment, Sarai vowed to defeat Elaine. However, to marry a man more influential than Glenn, she would have needed to choose someone from one of Ansport’s four most prominent families. Lacking the means to do so, she eventually settled for Rowan. After marrying Rowan, she believed she was living well—until she saw Elaine again. News of Elaine’s life always reignited Sarai’s jealousy and dissatisfaction.

Life is full of unexpected twists.

Now, a change of leadership loomed over the Johns Group. Sarai seemed very smug and eager to flaunt this in front of Elaine, so she called Elaine.

“‘Elaine,” Sarai greeted with a feigned tone of sadness, “how are you?”

“I’m fine. Why are you calling?” Elaine was puzzled since her sister-in-law had never reached out before.

Sarai continued, “I called because I was worried you might be distressed since Madisyn is gone. Are you holding up okay? Life can be so unpredictable.”

“What are you talking about?” Elaine was perplexed.

Hearing this, Sarai smirked inwardly, thinking Elaine was too overwhelmed by sadness to understand. “It’s unfortunate what happened to Madisyn, but we who are still here need to carry on living.”

“Enough!” Elaine snapped, growing irritated. “I know you’ve never liked us, but that’s no reason to wish harm upon Madisyn!”

Sarai was taken aback. Didn’t Elaine know that Madisyn had passed away? This revelation made things even more intriguing. Sarai feigned deep sorrow and said, “It seems you haven’t been informed, Elaine. Perhaps Glenn kept it from you to spare your feelings. Unfortunately, Madisyn’s passing was tragic. I heard the fire was intense, and the car was completely burned. Madisyn might have been entirely consumed by the flames. It’s so heartbreaking.”

“What are you talking about?” Elaine’s face went white.

Hearing this, Sarai smiled smugly, thinking she had the upper hand. “The car accident on Senna Street. Elaine, you might want to see for yourself.”

Elaine was skeptical, yet she felt compelled to look the car accident up on the internet. Sure enough, she found the car accident on Senna Street and recognized the license plate on the car. It was indeed Madisyn’s car!

Elaine felt weak, and the phone slipped from her grasp. Her mind went blank, and she nearly fainted. It took her some time to regain her composure. Shaking, she picked up her phone again. From the other end, Sarai’s voice came through, saying, “Elaine, Elaine?”

Elaine ended the call and dialed Glenn.

The sound of the ringtone sent a chill through her. Finally, Glenn answered, “Darling, how are you doing?” Glenn’s voice was soft.

“Has something happened to Madisyn?” Elaine asked, her voice quivering.

Glenn was taken aback. How could Elaine have found out? She usually didn’t follow the news, so it seemed unlikely she would know!

“Darling, who told you that?” Glenn inquired.

“Just tell me, is it true?” At that moment, Elaine’s tone steadied, and her voice was eerily calm.

Glenn responded anxiously, “Darling, please calm down. It’s not as you think.”

“So, is Madisyn really gone?” Elaine burst into tears and asked hoarsely, “Glenn, why didn’t you tell me right away? She’s my daughter!” She sobbed uncontrollably.

Hearing this, Glenn felt his heart break.

“Darling, please don’t worry.” Glenn attempted to reassure her, but before he could continue, Elaine interjected angrily, “How can you be so heartless? Our daughter is gone, and you’re telling me not to worry!”

“That’s not what I meant…”

“I understand you don’t want me to be sad, but she is our daughter, the one we had lost for many years and had just come back to us!” Elaine’s voice was ragged as she shouted, her emotions so high she nearly passed out.

At that moment, Glenn deeply regretted not informing Elaine sooner. If he had known she would replace out, he would have let her stay home.

“Darling…” He tried to explain, but Elaine didn’t let him speak. “‘Glenn, is our daughter really gone? She’s still so young and full of life…” Elaine’s voice broke with sobs.

“Darling!”

“Glenn, I can’t bear this. I’m a failure. I should have been there with my daughter!” Elaine was overwhelmed with guilt.

Glenn’s heart was in agony. He wished he could be there with her immediately. “Darling, Madisyn is okay!” As Elaine cried, her eyes puffy, she barely registered his words, saying, “Don’t try to soothe me. I’ve seen it. That car on Senna Street was Madisyn’s!”
