Chapter 461:

As the doctor spoke, he barely dared to breathe. The air around the man across from him was so heavy and ominous that it felt like a single misstep would leave him mangled on the spot.

Madisyn waited for Andrew at the office door. When he stepped out, his face was clouded with dread, and a heavy weight of despair seemed to hang over him. “I believe Damari will be fine,” Madisyn whispered, pulling him into a comforting embrace. He pulled her close, holding her tightly.

The dark aura surrounding him weighed heavily on Madisyn, making her heart ache in a way she couldn’t shake. For Andrew, Damari was his last remaining family. If he lost him, the pain would be unbearable. “I’ll be with you,” Madisyn whispered softly.

After what felt like an eternity of silence, Andrew finally gave a small, almost imperceptible nod.

“He woke up!” The assistant hurried over to deliver the news.

They quickly made their way to the ward. When they arrived, they found Jada already there. With red-rimmed eyes and a concerned expression, Jada chatted with Damari.

Noticing that Madisyn and Andrew had returned, Damari said, “Everyone else, please step outside. Madisyn, I’d like to have a word with you.”

Though Madisyn felt a twinge of apprehension, she nodded in agreement.

Jada pressed her lips together and then stepped out obediently, joining Andrew by the door. She gently patted his back and murmured, “Andrew, try not to be too disheartened. I know of a research institute that’s on the verge of developing a groundbreaking new drug. If Damari receives this treatment, it should make all the difference.”

Andrew remained silent, his gaze fixed intently on the door. Jada’s eyes also stayed on the door, her fists clenched tightly. She couldn’t fathom why Damari would want to speak privately with Madisyn. Every time his condition worsened, she was always the first to rush to his side. Yet, in her heart, it seemed she could not quite measure up to Madisyn. Her kindness seemed to be in vain! Jada felt a twinge of unhappiness.

In the ward, Damari said, “I can sense the end is near. When I’m gone, please look after Andrew for me. He won’t listen to anyone else but you. You must take good care of him. I’ll be forever grateful.” He grasped Madisyn’s hand.

Madisyn’s voice trembled as she fought back tears. “Damari, don’t talk like that. You’re going to pull through.”

“Everyone tries to reassure me, but I know my own body. I don’t have much time left. What worries me most is Andrew. Promise me—no matter how hard it gets, don’t abandon him, please,” Damari said sincerely.

Madisyn felt a deep sadness settle within her. Why did families who shared such profound love, like Andrew and Damari, have to face such heart-wrenching separation?

“Damari, I promise,” Madisyn said firmly. “But you must do everything you can to fight for life.”

“Okay.” Damari managed a weary smile, closing his eyes as he accepted the harsh truth—he had less than a week left to live.

At the sight of Damari in such a state, Madisyn’s heart ached with deep sadness. As she stepped out of the ward, Jada immediately approached her, asking, “What did Damari say to you?”

Without sparing a glance at Jada, Madisyn said to Andrew, “Take care of Damari; I have something I need to do.”

She turned on her heel and headed swiftly toward the exit.

Jada frowned and questioned, “Is there anything more important than Damari right now?”

Without responding to her, Andrew walked back into the ward.

Jada felt slighted by their disregard, and her dissatisfaction boiled over. She stamped her feet and followed Andrew into the ward.

Over the next two days, a steady stream of visitors came to see Damari. Everyone was aware that his time was running short and he wouldn’t live long. Glenn and Elaine visited nearly every day, and Andrew remained by Damari’s side, never straying far from the bedside.

Even Jada visited every day. The only one who remained conspicuously absent was Madisyn. No one knew what she was up to.

Some of the Klein family’s relatives, who were acquainted with Jada, expressed their sympathy for her when they learned that Andrew had gotten together with Madisyn. Now, they finally had their chance to badmouth Madisyn.

“Uncle Damari, with you in this state, why hasn’t Madisyn come to you? What could possibly be more important than you right now?” a distant nephew of Damari remarked.

“I’m fine now. Madisyn has something important to handle. If you have other matters to attend to, you can go ahead and take care of them, too,” Damari said casually.

“Oh, uncle, Jada’s running her own company and must have pressing matters to handle. Yet she’s been here with you every day. Her dedication shows just how much she cares for you.” The nephew praised Jada.

Hearing this, Jada interjected, “My company is still in its early stages, so I don’t have much on my plate. Perhaps Madisyn has something more pressing to attend to.”

“Is it really more important than Uncle Damari’s well-being? If Madisyn truly cared, she would have been here, looking after him herself.” The nephew’s face was flushed with righteous indignation.

Damari said, his voice indifferent, “What’s the fuss? Am I dying?”

“Of course not. It’s just that you’re not in the best of health right now, and we all care about you. After all, she’s your future granddaughter-in-law, but it seems she doesn’t show much concern. Uncle Damari, I fear she might treat Andrew the same way in the future,” his nephew said earnestly.

“I know her well enough. If you don’t, then maybe it’s best to keep your opinions to yourself,” Damari said coldly.
