Chapter 68

After getting Elijah on the line, Alice put the phone on speaker mode and placed it on the table with itsscreen down.

“Josh, is it? I know Elijah sent you to meet me.” Her tone was not inquiry but rather a direct statementof affirmation.

As Elijah was about to speak on the other end of the phone, he fell silent and listened attentively uponhearing her words. Did she accidentally call me?

He believed that Alice was foolish, but little did he know that this was all part of her plan.

“I don’t understand what you’re talking about.” Although Josh had a moment of panic, he knew thatadmitting to anything would jeopardize the fourteen thousand that had been promised to him.

Without even glancing at Josh, Alice pulled out a check from her bag and started filling it in for anamount clearly stated as seven hundred thousand.

Meanwhile, the man stood beside her with his greedy, red eyes fixed on the check, his heart racing withexcitement at the sight of so much money.

He surmised that she wanted to ask him questions, and he was more than willing to oblige if it meantearning seven hundred thousand with just a few words.

“Mr. Hayes, do you understand now?” she asked casually without even glancing at Josh.

Elijah anxiously listened to their conversation, hoping Josh wouldn’t mess up. However, the nextsecond brought an unexpected answer from Josh on the phone.

“Yes, Elijah asked me to come. He gave me fourteen thousand and instructed me to replace you. Thethings I said earlier were also taught by him,” Josh admitted without hesitation.

Only then did Alice lift her gaze toward Josh. “Did he say anything else to you?”

“No, nothing else. In fact, I didn’t even fully grasp the details of the situation.”

She turned over the phone that was resting on the table. “Uncle Elijah, I’m sure you heard everything. Ifyou didn’t, it’s not a problem because I have recorded the conversation. Shall we meet at the policestation?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, and I don’t even know who that Josh guy is. This is ridiculous.”Guilty, Elijah abruptly hung up the phone.

Stunned, Josh did not expect that Alice had just called Elijah and that Elijah had overheard theirconversation.

He realized that he wouldn’t be able to get any money from Elijah now. However, he didn’t mind as shehad prepared him a check for seven hundred thousand, but to his surprise, she put the freshly writtencheck into her bag and prepared to leave.

“Hey, you haven’t given me the money yet.” Josh rushed to intercept her. “Aren’t you going to give methe seven-hundred-thousand check you just wrote?”

“Why should I give it to you? Do I know you? The seven-hundred-thousand check you’re talking aboutis actually intended for a charity organization,” Alice explained as she was in a good mood.

She was like an eagle, never letting go of its prey. It was most likely that she learned this move fromEthan. The check merely served as bait for Josh to spill the beans.

As expected, Ethan’s strategy proved to be effective. She had managed to break Elijah and Emma’sscheme by simply writing a check she had intended to donate to a charity organization.

When dealing with such unscrupulous people, one had to resort to the same methods Ethan used.

Dumbfounded, Josh never expected the situation to develop like this. He had sold out Elijah as hethought he could get a higher amount, yet he didn’t receive a single penny in the end.

Josh’s eyes turned fierce as he moved to intercept Alice, but she quickly showed him the earlierrecording. “Mr. Hayes, do you want to go to the police station?”

As a law-abiding citizen, she was willing to go to the police if there was a conflict. There was nothingwrong with it!

Josh instantly calmed down. He remembered Elijah had described her as foolish, gullible, and easy tomanipulate when he approached Josh earlier, yet she was not like that at all.

Meanwhile, Elijah was fuming as he had never imagined Alice could so easily dismantle Emma and hissupposedly perfect plan.

He wondered whether Alice had suddenly become so astute or if it was just a stroke of luck.

Alice did not head to Galerprises and instead wandered around outside. She only returned to KnightResidence in the afternoon.

As she arrived home, she noticed Caroline sitting on the couch with a gloomy expression. Britney wastrying to cheer her up with a bunch of toys, but Caroline remained dejected.

Alice couldn’t help but feel sorry for Caroline. She was aware that Caroline was a sensitive child. Shebelieved Caroline must not feel secure yet, especially after suddenly coming to the Knight Residence.

Although Britney had warned her to keep her distance from Caroline and let her get used to a lifewithout her, Alice couldn’t help but feel sorry for Caroline when she saw the girl looking like this. Sherealized she might have acted too hastily in keeping her distance from Caroline. After all, Caroline hadonly recently returned to the Knight Residence.

At the same time, Caroline heard some sounds and quickly looked up. When she saw Alice, her eyesinstantly lit up, and her previously listless face suddenly burst into a brilliant smile. “Mommy, you’reback!” she shouted as she threw herself into Alice’s arms.

Britney looked a bit despondent, but she didn’t say anything and just let out a soft sigh.

“Mommy, you’re not leaving me behind, are you?” Caroline held onto Alice’s neck tightly and refused tolet go.

Alice’s nose tingled with emotion as she didn’t know how to answer this question, so she changed thesubject. “Sweetie, what did you have for lunch?”

Britney was moved, as she could tell from Alice’s actions that she was genuinely concerned aboutCaroline.

“She didn’t eat much for lunch. Probably because she didn’t see you.” Britney walked over with a kindexpression.

Alice subconsciously tightened her arms around Caroline. “Sweetie, it’s a bad habit not to eat. And it’snot what a good girl should do.”

“Mommy, I want to eat what you make.” Caroline rubbed her little head back and forth in Alice’s armslike a spoiled kitten.

“Okay, I’ll make it for you, but you have to promise me you’ll eat your meals properly from now on,okay?” Alice’s heart melted as she couldn’t resist Caroline’s adorable behavior.

She cast a concerned glance at Britney, fearing the latter might not agree with or be unhappy about herdecision.

Britney smiled at Alice. “Go ahead. Just make something simple. I can tell that Caroline will like it aslong as you make it.”

Alice finally felt relieved as she could tell that Britney’s concern for Caroline was genuine.

“I don’t just like what Mommy makes. I also like what Grandma makes. The snacks she buys and thefruits she washes for me, I like them all. Even the toys she buys for me, I like them too.” Caroline wassuch a smart and sensible child.

She sure was good at pleasing people!
