Chapter 69

“Oh, my. You have such a sweet mouth!” Britney burst into laughter, her previously composed facelighting up with joyful wrinkles.

Although Britney initially felt uneasy, Caroline’s sweet words quickly dispelled her discomfort. She evenwent to the kitchen to assist Alice.

Caroline watched from the side and grinned like a Cheshire cat.

Alice realized she shouldn’t rush Caroline’s rate of adapting to living in the Knight Residence anddecided to spend more time with her. Thus, she stayed and accompanied Caroline over the next fewdays.

As Caroline insisted on sleeping with Alice at night, they shared a bed.

On the third night of Alice’s stay in the Knight Residence, Ethan returned home late at around10.00PM. As he made his way to the second floor, he heard voices coming from the second room.

The soft, childish voice was unmistakably Caroline’s.

He stopped outside the room and was about to knock on the door when he overheard Caroline asking,“Mommy, isn’t Daddy stronger than Bruce Yeager?”

The hand that had wanted to knock on the door hung in mid-air as he subconsciously straightened hisposture since he wanted to hear Alice’s answer to the question.

Alice paused for a moment upon hearing Caroline’s question. “Sweetie, there’s no comparison betweenthem.”

As Bruce was a sc*mbag, she believed there was no comparison between him and Ethan, who wasvastly superior. It would be an insult to Ethan to compare him with Bruce.

Outside the room, Ethan’s eyes narrowed. No comparison? Does she seriously think I can’t evenmeasure up to Bruce?

“Mommy, I think you’re seeing Bruce through rose-tinted glasses. No, your eyes are covered in eyeboogers.” Obviously, Caroline also misunderstood Alice’s meaning.

“Sweetie, is it really appropriate to say that to me?” Alice couldn’t help but chuckle in exasperation athow Caroline’s words sometimes seemed beyond her age.

“Ms. Hall said we shouldn’t be a doormat as we’ll lose our dignity if we allow others to take advantageof us.” Caroline didn’t think she said anything wrong and believed her words made perfect sense.

Alice felt her lips twitch as she wondered what Cecilia had taught her child.

She believed she should send Caroline to kindergarten for some education.

The little girl’s eyes lit up as she made a serious suggestion. “Mommy, why don’t you replace someoneelse instead of Bruce? How about Daddy?”

Ethan had already withdrawn his raised hand as he leaned against the wall with his upper body slightlybent, listening leisurely to the conversation inside the room.

He thought that what Caroline said was incredibly good!

Alice was amused at Caroline’s words. “Wouldn’t it be the same?”

“Of course not. Since you’re married to him, you can still have him physically even if you can’t win hisheart.” The little girl effortlessly spewed out one set of words after another without much thought.

Outside the room, Ethan blinked as he acknowledged that what Caroline said made sense. Since heand Alice were married, she definitely had him as a partner, but he wondered why Caroline said Alice

couldn’t win his heart.

Alice blinked as she looked at the girl, wondering where she had learned such theories. What does shemean by even if I can’t win Ethan’s heart, I can still have him physically? I don’t want him even if he ispresent physically. Absolutely not!

“Mommy, Daddy is a good man. You should seriously consider him.” Caroline continued to promoteEthan to Alice.

Alice couldn’t help but want to laugh. “You haven’t even met him yet, so how do you know he’s a goodman?”

“I’ve seen his photos. Daddy is handsome, and even Grandma said he’s handsome, too. Daddy alsohas a lot of money, enough for me and Mommy to spend. So, in the future, you won’t have to work hardto make money.” Caroline eagerly listed all of Ethan’s advantages, hoping her parents could staytogether forever and that she wouldn’t have to be separated from her mother.

Alice was well aware of Caroline’s wishes, but she also knew she and Ethan would divorce in just sixmonths. She would have to leave once the time was up.

Although she couldn’t bear to leave Caroline, she knew she had to face the harsh reality.

In the future, Caroline would become part of the Knight Family, and Alice would gradually need to fadeout of her life.

As Alice didn’t want Caroline to have a negative impression of the people in the Knight Family, shecouldn’t tell the girl about the agreement that Britney made her sign, nor could she tell her the reasonwhy Ethan married her.

For the sake of Caroline, Alice decided to take the blame for leaving her in the future. She pondered fora moment and came up with a persuasive excuse. “But I don’t have feelings for your dad.”

Her statement wasn’t entirely false. She knew the real purpose of their marriage and had signed anagreement to leave after six months. Therefore, she was confident she wouldn’t fall in love with Ethan.

Ethan, who had been eavesdropping while leaning leisurely against the wall outside the room,straightened up with his eyes turned cold and stern.

“Why? You don’t like Daddy?” Caroline’s tone was reluctant as she didn’t want to give up either.

Outside the room, the upright Ethan narrowed his eyes as he also wanted to know the reason forAlice’s answer.

Alice sighed inwardly as she knew Caroline all too well. Once Caroline had a question, she wouldn’t letit go until she received a satisfactory answer. If Alice couldn’t come up with a convincing explanation,Caroline would keep probing and might even lose her sleep.

Since Alice had already decided to be the bad guy, she was determined to see it through to the end.

“Your father is cold, stubborn, and has a sharp tongue. He is infuriating to deal with.” She dared to saythose words with a clear conscience that it was absolutely true without any exaggeration.

Meanwhile, Ethan was momentarily startled outside the door. Is she talking about me? She said thatI’m cold, stubborn, and sharp-tongued. Am I really that infuriating to deal with?

“I-Is that really how he is?” Caroline was a little stunned. “In that case… he wouldn’t be popular withgirls.”

She looked at Alice with a conflicted expression. “Mommy, can’t you just bear with Daddy’s flaws?”

As Alice knew she had to leave in six months, she couldn’t give Caroline any false hope. Since she haddecided to be the bad guy, she would play it through to the end. “Sweetie, can you please not throw meto the wolves? I want to live a few more years.”

Ethan’s cold eyes narrowed ever so slightly as he wondered, What does she mean by throwing her tothe wolves? Wait a minute. Am I the wolf?!
