Chapter 18

Alaric’s POV

After my meeting concluded, I immediately made my way to the Salon. However, to my dismay, my wife was taking an eternity to get ready, and we were dangerously close to being late for our plans. Growing increasingly impatient, I let out a sigh and muttered, “My wife is taking forever.”

Just as my frustration was reaching its peak, my secretary suddenly exclaimed, “Ma’am

Farren is here!” and pointed in her direction.

Taking a deep breath, I was on the verge of complaining about why it took her so long to emerge. But as soon as my eyes landed on her, the world around me seemed to fade away, leaving only Farren in my line of sight.

Tonight, my wife was adorned in a modest turquoise dress that accentuated her beauty. flawlessly. It wasn’t just good for her; it was nothing short of perfection.

The pearls delicately cascading in a halter style along her n*eckline were barely noticeable. In fact, Farren herself outshone the pearls in terms of sheer radiance.

As I gazed at her, I felt as though I couldn’t catch my breath. She was simply too stunning for my eyes to handle. Her l*ps, resembling the petals of a rose, harmonized beautifully with her translucent, fair skin, almost as if she were a captivating snow fairy, an enchanting temptress.

Surprisingly, I found it incredibly challenging to maintain my composure when she was around, and an overwhelming lump formed in my throat. My palms became moist, my knees grew feeble, and a chilling sensation enveloped my feet. The presence of butterflies fluttering in my stomach intensified while my heart pounded rapidly and forcefully, resembling a synchronized march of soldiers. This sensation left me feeling lightheaded and dizzy.

I had previously observed her donning a seductive dress at the bar. However, I couldn’t help but notice a distinct change in my emotions compared to before.

“Wow! Ma’am Farren! You look absolutely stunning!” I heard Alejandro complimenting.

I looked at Farren. My l*ps détached, and then subconscious words sl*pped out of my mouth.

“Yeah. She’s beautiful,” I murmured.

Only in the midst of an overwhelming silence did I come to realize the gravity of my actions.

Chapter 18

“Did you just call me…what?” Farren questioned, her voice filled with surprise.

Although panic surged within me, I managed to maintain a composed facade as I glanced at her astonished expression, as well as the expression of my secretary.

Attempting to cover up my mistake, I feigned a cough and asked innocently, “What? Did I say something wrong?”

My secretary and wife exchanged glances, their confusion evident.

Determined to salvage the situation and avoid further embarrassment, I took a step closer and explained, “We are playing the role of a loving married couple in public. That’s why I made that comment.”

As soon as those words left my mouth, Alejandro’s eyes widened in comprehension as if he had finally understood my peculiar behavior.

Meanwhile, Farren simply lowered her head and pursed her l*ps.

‘Is she disappointed?”

‘Should I just tell her the truth that I really think that she’s pretty?”

As I wondered what to do in order to lift her mood, Farren walked past me as she uttered, “Let’s go.”

Lost in thought, pondering how to uplift her spirits, Farren walked past me and uttered, “Let’s go.”

Her sweet scent lingered in my nose, and I was left regretting my action.

“I really thought that meant it, Sir. I almost believed you. I didn’t know that you are a great actor,” Alejandro, who knew about my deal with my wife, said.

I really hope it was just an act.

The car ride was filled with silence as Farren remained quiet, her gaze fixed on the passing scenery outside the window.

I studied her side profile, pondering on how to initiate a conversation.

Normally, I’m not one to engage in small talk, but in that moment, I felt the urge to say something, anything.

But what should I say? After racking my brain for what felt like an eternity, I finally came up with a topic to discuss.

“I noticed your car in the garage,” I began, hoping to break the ice.

Farren turned her head towards me, diverting her attention from the window. “Did you return the car to your friend’s brother?” I asked, curious to know.

“Yes,” she replied, her response short and concise.

“I see,” I murmured, nodding my head in understanding. Once again, our gazes, avoiding any further eye contact.

The atmosphere inside the car grew heavy, and even my secretary, Alejandro, seemed to sense the tension as he tightly gripped the steering wheel. It was evident that he, too, felt the awkwardness that permeated the air.

My eyes then shifted to Farren’s hand, noticing that she was no longer wearing a bandage. “Is your hand alright?” I ventured into another topic, hoping to keep the conversation going.

“Yes. It’s fine.”

Only two words had been added in her response.

She seemed like she had no interest in talking to me at all. I was the one who suggested that we should mind our own business when no one was around, but it still bothered.

me.

I couldn’t help but wonder what was going on with me.

I glanced out the window, realizing that I had given up trying to have a conversation with her. Farren seemed to be in the same boat.

The entire journey to her father’s house was filled with silence until we finally reached the gate.

“Sir, we’ve arrived,” Alejandro announced as he parked the car.

I glanced at Farren and inquired, “How about we step out together?” Extending my hand, I added, “It’s important for your father to witness our harmony as a couple.”

Farren’s gaze shifted towards my outstretched hand, but she hesitated to take it. Instead, she turned towards Alejandro and expressed, “I apologize, but could you give us a moment alone? I have something to discuss with my husband.”

Alejandro’s eyes met mine, awaiting my response,

I pulled my hand away from Farren and motioned for Alejandro to follow her lead.

After Alejandro got out of the car, it was just Farren and me.

“What did you want to talk about?” I asked.

“We don’t have to pretend in front of my dad,” she replied..

My eyes instinctively searched for her.

Farren was looking down, fixated on her fidgeting fingers in her lap.

“I have a strong bond with my late grandfather. But my dad and his new wife aren’t close to me. I have step-siblings, but only my stepbrother is kind to me. Anyway, we don’t have to pretend to be a perfect couple. So, don’t stress yourself too much.”

I didn’t respond. Honestly, I already knew that she wasn’t on good terms with her stepfamily. If she was, her stepmother wouldn’t have sent someone to stalk and scare her.

“You just need to fix your reputation, right?” she whispered, still not looking back at me. “So, just make an appearance at the party and leave. I’ll also get something from them, and then we can leave.”

I furrowed my brow at her statement.

Didn’t I come here because I wanted to teach those people a lesson for messing with my wife?

They need to understand their place. As Alaric Ford, I won’t allow anyone to mistreat my wife.

Yes, it’s because of the pride I have in my name..

“I’ll stay here with you,” I whispered. “I think leaving my wife at the party will only

I whispered. “I think leaving my wife at the par worsen my reputation.”

“Ah, I see,” she replied. A faint smile appeared on her l*ps. “Then, stay. I just need to get something, and then we can go back home.”.

I inquired, “So, what is it that you truly need, by the way?”

Farren glanced at me, her l*ps parting as if she was unsure about sharing it. However, after a brief pause, she replied, “You don’t need to know.”

Her words left me feeling a bit downhearted.

“Anyway, if my father and stepmother do something, just let it pass. Then, let’s go,” she said, preparing to leave.

But I quickly grabbed her wrist and pulled her back to where she was standing before.

“What do you mean Ldon’t need to know?” I asked, clenching my teeth. “I am your husband. I should know.”

“But we’re not really in that kind of relationship,” she responded.

My grip on her wrist loosened.

“We’ll be getting a divorce soon. I don’t want to share my whole life with someone who will eventually leave me.”

My breath caught for a moment as I gazed into her sorrowful eyes.

Upon observing Farren, it was evident to me that she possesses immense strength. She has the ability to protect herself and stand independently.

However, tonight, as she spoke about the day I would have to depart from her side, I noticed a vulnerability in her.

Could it be that she dislikes the notion of sharing her story with someone who will eventually leave?

Reflecting on her past, it becomes apparent that she has endured a great deal of sadness.

Her father betrayed her mom by marrying his mistress, then her mother passed away when she was young, and even her grandfather, who raised her, has also passed away. And now, she is married to someone like me who cannot reciprocate her love.

How much more must she endure?

“Farren,” I called out.

Her captivating eyes lifted, meeting my gaze, and in that moment, I felt a warmth. spreading to my ears.

There was this insane bug in my mind that begged me to console her somehow.

And that method could be the most insane thing I’ll ever do.

“Yes?” Farren exclaimed.

I couldn’t help but stare at her l*ps.

Gradually, those gorgeous l*ps of hers started moving once more.

“What is…”

As soon as she began to speak, I pulled her closer and planted a k*ss on her l*ps.
