Forsaking the Years of Longing -
Forsaking Billionaire 83
Chapter 7
The next day.
Daphne found the divorce agreement and swiftly signed her name, making a final farewell to the marriage.
She then took the agreement downstairs and headed straight to Matthew's study.
Knock, knock.
She tapped on the door twice, and Matthew's deep voice responded, "Come in."
Daphne walked in, placing the agreement on the desk. divorce papers. I've signed them."
"The Her gaze was calm, and her voice was so distant it felt as if there was a wall between them.
Matthew noticed her silence and lack of emotion, and it stirred an inexplicable restlessness within him.
After a moment, he lowered his voice without realizing it.
"Daphne, I was too impatient yesterday. I shouldn't have been so harsh."
Hearing this, Daphne's lips curled into a mocking smile, her voice steady and indifferent. "Mr. Roberts is the master of this house; of course, he has the right to make any decision." Her choice of words deliberately distanced them.
Matthew paused, seeming surprised by her cold demeanor, and couldn't help but say, "Daphne, there's no need to act like this."
He then took out a delicate jewelry box from the drawer and placed it in front of her.
"I'm sorry for what I said yesterday. Don't take it to heart."
Daphne glanced at the jewelry box, revealing a gemstone necklace inside.
In the past, whenever she was upset, Matthew would always buy her gifts to make her smile. But this time, she felt no joy.
Before Daphne could refuse, Matthew began issuing orders again.
"Just be patient for a while. Show some generosity. When Charlotte's condition improves, I'll make it up to you."
Wait? Matthew, we don't have a future anymore.
Daphne's heart filled with cold laughter, the pain having numbed her entirely. She responded flatly, "Mr. Roberts can do as he wishes." With that, she turned to leave.
Just then, Charlotte's voice came from the doorway, carrying a hint of provocation. "What nice gift is in your hands, sister? Can I see it too?" She entered the study, her gaze shifting between Daphne and Matthew.
Daphne casually placed the necklace back in the box, her tone indifferent. "It's just a necklace. If you want it, take it."
She was utterly disgusted with the two before her, especially since she knew the necklace was really intended for Charlotte.
To her surprise, Charlotte glanced at the necklace and then said with a boastful tone.
"Oh, it's just a bonus gift from the necklace Matthew bought me.
Never mind, he's already given me plenty; you can keep this one, sister."
Daphne's eyes turned icy as she glared at Matthew.
"A bonus gift, huh..."
Matthew's brow furrowed, his expression stiffening. He was about to speak when Charlotte interrupted.
She changed her tone, "Daphne, Matthew and I are going to try on wedding dresses today. Would you join us?"
Daphne's eyes, filled with resentment, suddenly dimmed.
Charlotte immediately put on a pleading expression for Matthew.
"Matthew, can you let Daphne come with me?"
Matthew, who had been silent, turned to Daphne and said, "Daphne, go with Charlotte."
Even though Daphne had already numbed her heart, she hadn't expected Matthew to be this cruel.
He actually wanted her to watch him try on wedding dresses with another woman?
Bitterness surged within her, as if even in these last few days, he was determined to wound her completely.
"Fine." Daphne forced herself to endure the pain, gritting her teeth as she pushed out the word.
Inside the bridal shop.
Charlotte excitedly selected wedding dresses, each one more expensive than the last.
Matthew and Daphne sat nearby, a silent, invisible wall separating them.
"Do you remember the first time we tried on wedding dresses?"
Daphne broke the silence, her voice soft but with a chill.
Matthew paused, then replied, "Daphne, let the past be the past.
Once Charlotte recovers, we'll start over."
"Start over?"
Daphne laughed, the sound bitter and mocking. "Matthew, did you forget? We just divorced."
