Agnes tried to lighten the awkward mood with a joking tone, but Jared didn't seem to be buying it.

His face looked even worse after Agnes finished speaking.

Yet, he remained silent, he just stared at Agnes with a cold gaze, making her feel uneasy.

Agnes had no idea what to say. She could only slowly back away.

She hadn't gotten far when Jared grabbed her arm again, "Agnes, what the hell are you up to?"

The coldness in Jared's voice was still there, Agnes could hear the hidden anger in his voice.

Agnes already had an explanation prepared, "Actually, I came back to get my ID."

She had thought out the worst-case scenario in the car.

If Jared found her before she found Nocturne, she'd have to replace an excuse and get away as soon as possible.

She had thought of this excuse a long time ago.

Four years ago, when Beatrice hit her with her car, it was Reggie Albert who saved her life and took her away directly. She then flew directly to Manhattan on a private jet. She didn't take a single thing from here, including her ID.

It was still in the drawer by the bed at Maplewood Manor.

For all these years, Agnes had been living in Manhattan under another identity.

Even she found this excuse a bit far-fetched, but it was her only option now.

Jared's face darkened even more. He asked coldly, "What do you need the ID for?"

"I didn't need it while I was in Manhattan, but now that I'm back, it's inconvenient without it." Agnes answered.

She had to make herself appear confident, that was the only way she could dispel Jared's doubts.

But Jared only smirked sarcastically, "Do you even remember your name is Agnes?"

Agnes understood what Jared meant, especially the anger and disdain in his eyes.

Agnes felt she couldn't stay here for long.

The longer she stayed, the more likely she was to be exposed.

And if Nocturne showed up now, she'd be done for.

"Mr. Whitfield, I deeply regret the inconvenience I've caused, but since I promised never to show up in front of you again, I've had to make this choice. I'll leave immediately." Agnes avoided Jared, pretending to look for her ID in the drawer.

She was extremely nervous, she felt Jared's gaze on her back the whole time.

She wasn't sure if Jared would become suspicious.

She didn't expect everything in the drawer to be exactly the same as four years ago.

Even the hair tie she left casually in the drawer was still there.

There was a card holder, and her ID and old bank cards were in it.

She didn't need those anymore.

Agnes took out her ID from the card holder, then she stood up.

When she turned around, Jared was already standing behind her.

Jared looked very displeased.

Agnes was about to leave, but Jared blocked her way again, "You're in such a hurry for your ID, are you planning to get married?" Agnes was taken aback.

She didn't understand what Jared meant for a moment.

But she figured it out two seconds later.

Yes, an ID does serve an important purpose. It is required when registering a marriage.

Agnes hadn't thought of that, but Jared had.
