Chapter 290
Evander’s face fell, and he rubbed his chin. “Continue.”
“Joel lost his father when he was five. His sister raised him. They survived on donations from theirfellow villagers. He worked hard and got accepted into a design academy while his sister became anurse. She was assigned to a hospital in a county.'’
Everything about the siblings' lives sounded normal up until that point. But then everything changedwhen Sylas took a file out of his briefcase and handed it to Evander.
“Coincidentally. Joel's sister is the nurse who... worked with us five years ago.”
A giim look filled Evander’s eyes, and he said solemnly, “So you're saying this has something to do withthat woman who went into labor back then?”
“Yes,” answered Sylas. “I ran into that nurse once five years ago, and I still remember what she lookslike. That's Eve.”
A hint of surprise replaced the solenmity in Evander’s eyes. If that's true, then that explains why Joelwanted to hit me.
Evander slept with a random woman five years ago. It was an accident, and he would swear his life onit. He had no interest in that woman. All he wanted was to get rid of that baby, so it wouldn't get in theway of his life.
The nurse was the only one they bribed. Joel should know what happened and why she was paid. Butthen the nurse drove into a river and died in an accident a year before. The cops said there were nosigns of drunk driving or suicide. It was still a mystery until now, so Joel thought Evander was the onebehind this.
The air itself was filled with the scent of tension. A moment of silence later, Evander said, “Find out thereal reason Eve died and tell Joel I'll be meeting him.”
There's something sinister behind Eve's death. Someone we don't know has found out what happenedfive years ago, and I need to know who the enemy is. I've been keeping Floretta safe all these yearsand don't dare to imagine what would happen if her biological mother's identity were exposed. I'm sorry,Joel. The most I can do is provide recompense. It won't bring your sister back, but I hope it'll help.
Fortunately, Joel was directing all his fury at Evander and only Evander. Angeline was nothing but acheckpoint for him to get closer to Evander. He wouldn't hurt her.
With that little problem out of the way, Evander got out of his car and entered the residence. Onceinside the house, he saw a pair of familiar shoes on the shoe rack, and the air was filled with the aromaof home-cooked food.
A silvery voice came from the kitchen, lending a hint of warmth to the otherwise cold residence. Thefrown on Evander’s forehead disappeared, and he felt a surge of warmth enveloping him.
Olivine was in the lounge, watching some TV. “Oh. you're home, Evander.” She looked delighted to seehim.
“Mm.” Evander resumed his aloof persona and unbuttoned his suit.
Olivine managed to move in only after she pleaded with Valerie. She said she needed to get closer toEvander since the wedding was drawing nearer. Evander didn't refuse the proposal, but ever sinceOlivine moved in. he almost never came back. Even when he did, he was only there to see Floretta.
Obviously, Evander refused to entertain Olivine, but she ignored it. Quickly, she rose from the couchand trotted over to him. “Just in time, Evander. It's almost lunchtime. Go on and take a shower. I pickedup a little trick up from a masseuse. Old Mis. Golding said it's really grea—•”
“Thanks, but no thanks.” Evander didn't even look at her. His gaze was fixated on the kitchen, and hewas upset. She must have heard all the commotion. So why isn't Angeline coming out?
Olivine noticed where he was staring, and a hint of envy filled her heart, but she kept her smile up asbest she could. “We're getting married soon, Evander. You really don't have to hold back. Why don't wego to the lounge and have some fruits?”
She was trying to tell him not to pay other women any heed, for they were going to get married soon. And yet Evander ignored her. Absentmindedly, he said, “You want fruits, you can have them yourself.Don't follow me around.”
He held his impatience down and rolled his sleeves up. Then Evander headed straight to the kitchen.
Olivine was frustrated by his indifferent attitude, and now she was surprised that he would go into thekitchen. “Why are you going into the kitchen? The oily stench is going to stick to your outfit.”
Oh goodness, she's so annoying! Slowly, Evander turned around and asked, “Because I want to cook.Would you like to help?”
“I-I don't know how to deal with food.” A look of contempt welled in her eyes. I've never stepped into thekitchen my whole life.
I expected as much. Evander sneered and entered the kitchen.
Olivine was at a loss for words. A kitchen of all places? That's not the kind of place he should go. Andyet he looks like he knows how to hold his own. D*mn it. He's not going to the kitchen to cook. He justwants to see Angeline!
Angeline was kneading her dough and teaching Francesca how to make a cake. Floretta loved thecakes she made, but she couldn't come over every day. so she thought she should teach someone
how to make them.
The mold was inside the cabinet above her. She stood on her tiptoe, but she still couldn't reach it. Andthen, the light dimmed for a moment as someone took the mold for her.
Angeline wondered who it was. And then she noticed the subtle scent of sandalwood coming off theman. Surprised, she snapped, “Why are you in the kitchen? Your fiancee is out there. Go to her.”
“I'm here to help. I don't want everyone calling me an exploitative guy. What if they think I'm using youas a free cook?” He spoke, his voice sexy as usual. And then Evander placed the mold on theworkstation. “So, what do I need to do?”
Angeline stared right at him, sizing up his shirt and pants. They looked mismatched when compared tothe backdrop. Someone like him trying to help me? What is he thinking? Well, he is offering, and I won'treject a good offer.
