His Destructive, Toxic Love -
Chapter 527
Caroline's heart felt heavy as she listened. Her fingers brushed against the divorce papers tucked away in her pocket, her eyes growing even redder. She gently hugged Eliza, "Alright, let's bring him back home." Eliza returned to Falconridge with Casper's ashes. After the funeral, she asked Dillon for a photo of Casper, got it enlarged at the photo shop, and hung it in her home. Caroline felt a pang of discomfort watching all this unfold. She had been mulling over the two divorce papers Dillon gave her for a long time before finally deciding to show them to Eliza. "Eliza, here... take a look."
Caroline handed the divorce papers to Eliza. Eliza was taken aback, not expecting to receive divorce papers Casper had prepared well before his death, ironically dated after his accident.
"Are you giving me this fake document because you're worried I'll go after the Welton family's fortune? Don't worry, I won't take a dime from him."
Caroline could see that Eliza had misunderstood. She quickly clarified, "It's not fake, it's legit. You both signed the divorce agreement, didn't you?"
It was true; the divorce agreement had been signed ages ago. But things between her and Casper had started up again. He never brought up the divorce after that. So why was there suddenly a divorce certificate? "So, you're saying Casper and I... are officially over now, right?" Her voice was filled with pain.
Caroline felt awful too, "I guess that's what it means."
"What about his will then? Is that still valid?"
He had made so many plans for her. If he truly wanted a divorce, why go through all that trouble? It didn't add up.
Caroline knew it didn't make sense
either. But this was what Casper had left behind, and she had no choice but to follow through. "His arrangements for you and Brock still stand. He wanted you to replace
happiness again."
Happiness?
If he truly wanted her to be happy, he wouldn't have been tangled up with her for so long. Now that he's gone, he wants to play the noble card. Did he think she'd be grateful?
She was an adult, capable of making her own decisions about staying or leaving, without needing his plans.
"Brock is his son..." Her hand
instinctively touched her belly, "...he can make plans for him, but I don't need them. I won't take the money or shares he left for me, nor will work at Welton International. Awon't claim anything that's not mine, no is real or
matter if this certificate, no
not. You can count on that."
"Eliza, I'm not worried about you going after Welton International... It was Casper's life's work, and whoever he wants to leave it to is up to him. What do I have to worry about?" Caroline was hurt by the misunderstanding. Eliza knew Caroline had no real power at Welton International, despite her title. The power struggle didn't apply to her, whether she joined or not.
She had intended to discuss leaving Welton International with Casper after they got married. But she never got the chance.
"You can accept or reject Casper's arrangements as you see fit; it doesn't involve me. I won't become the heir to Welton International if you decline anything..."
Caroline understood Eliza's mood right now. But she felt Eliza shouldn't jump to conclusions about her. In her eyes, Eliza had always been reasonable, gentle, and kind-hearted, not one to misunderstand her like this. She shook her head, disappointed. "If you need anything in the future, just reach out to Dillon. I'm heading back now."
Eliza watched Caroline leave. At
Welton International, Caroline only
had the authority to carry out decisions, the real power still lay with Casper. Even as a vice president, it was the same. At
Welton International, no matter how capable a woman was, she had no
claim to inheritance. This had been the Welton family tradition for generations.
