Chapter 623 Maybe I'm Not Working Hard Enough

After hearing Yanis' response, Zane didn't back down. "Yanis, I..." The words he wanted to say were on the tip of his tongue, but he hesitated and then straightened up. "Let's go." Yanis looked at him curiously. "What did you want to say just now?"

Zane shook his head. "It's nothing, let's go."

Since the weather had warmed up considerably, there were a lot more people out on the streets at night than before.

Yanis' car was parked in a spot in front of Banyan Garden and they walked over slowly together.

After opening the car door and placing the flowers in the backseat, Yanis opened the passenger side door for Zane. "Get in."

Zane nodded and bent down to get into the car.

As far as he could remember, he had never really ridden in Yanis' car before.

Once inside, Zane tilted his head slightly upward towards Yanis. "Do you get nervous driving at night?"

Upon hearing this question from Zane, Yanis glanced over at him before replying confidently: "Don't worry about it; I won't sell you to some guy."

Zane chuckled softly under his breath: "I'd give myself away for free to you; nobody else could afford me."

Yanis looked back at him quizzically: "How much do other people pay?"

Zane remained silent for a few seconds before answering: "Priceless."

"That sounds expensive. Then why free for me?" said Yanis with a smile as she met Zane's gaze again.

The atmosphere between them suddenly became warmer by several degrees.

However just as soon as she realized what was happening between them, Yanis hesitated briefly - but before she could make any move, Zane suddenly reached out and grabbed her wrist, pulling her closer towards himself with some force..

In response, Yanis leant forward until their faces were only inches apart from each other, close enough that she could smell alcohol on his breath, but not so much that it was overwhelming or unpleasant.

"Yanis."

"Uh-huh?" Yanis instinctively answered.

But Zane didn't say another word. He sat up straight, tilted his head slightly back, and kissed her.

Although taken aback by this sudden gesture, Yanis made no attempt to pull away. This wasn't exactly an empty street, and anyone who happened to glance their way would be able to see exactly what they were doing. In this scenario, Yanis was more than a little nervous. Fortunately, it didn't last long.

"So, does this count as drunk driving?" Zane asked her after they parted lips.

Yanis blushed a little and regained her composure before sitting up straight. "Nope!"

After saying that, Yanis turned around and went to the driver's seat. She opened the door and sat down. "Close the door."

Zane looked at her with a slightly flushed face and hooked his lip corner. "Sure."

After Zane closed the car door, Yanis started up the car and left Banyan Garden.

It was quiet in the car for some time.

Zane sat in the passenger seat looking at Yanis through his window while she drove.

The silence in the car became too much for Yanis, so she turned to say something to Zane but noticed he was staring at her instead. She swallowed back her words, then turned back to focus on driving again. "Yanis," Zane called out softly after a few seconds of silence passed by.

Yanis deliberately waited for several seconds before responding with an "Hmm?"

Zane turned his head towards her with a serious expression on his face. "Yanis, how long until I can become permanent?"

His question caused Yanis to pause briefly before asking him back: "Are you in a hurry?"

"Not really," he replied calmly while adding: "I just wanted to know if there's any deadline or anything."

Yanis glanced over at him sideways then said: "Let's take it step by step."

Zane nodded silently but spoke again after some time had passed between them: "Maybe I'm not working hard enough."

At that moment, Yanis had no idea what he meant, until early next morning when she received an enormous bouquet of bright red roses delivered right outside her doorstep, followed shortly thereafter by someone bringing breakfast over which included everything she liked.

Wendy had been preparing breakfast when she saw all those dishes laid out on their table, so naturally asked if they still needed any food prepared or not.

"Hey sis," said Yanis looking towards Wendy, "Do you think I could finish all these alone?"

Wendy coughed lightly before replying; "Probably not... why don't you share it with Bonnie or Linda?"

Even though everyone working there took some food home as well there were still many leftovers!

Once done eating breakfast, Yanis immediately called Zane. When Yanis called, Albi answered and said that Zane was in a meeting and wouldn't be finished for another hour. Yanis had no choice but to hang up the phone.

At noon, Yanis received two clients and wanted Wendy to make fried rice for lunch. But just as she spoke, Wendy was about to go buy ingredients when someone delivered lunch.

There was much more food than in the morning.

Yanis looked at the takeout boxes and suddenly had nothing to say.

"Yanis, who's this suitor of yours that's so sincere? Sending flowers and breakfast early in the morning, now sending lunch too. He really cares about you," Linda commented as she put something down on the table while admiring the takeout boxes. "No one has ever sent me flowers before."

Wendy looked at her. "Don't you have a boyfriend?"

Linda shrugged. "A queen doesn't need a boyfriend."

Ever since breaking up with her boyfriend not long ago, Linda had turned over a new leaf and decided to focus on her career instead of men.

Wendy shook her head helplessly. "Go put things away first, then come help Yanis share some happiness."

Linda nodded repeatedly before running off like a gust of wind. "Leave that unadon to me."

Yanis asked Wendy to tidy up while she went outside with her phone ready to call Zane, but he beat her to it by calling first. "Yanis, Albi said you called me this morning?"

Yanis made an affirmative sound then asked directly, "Mr. Lawrence, are you so rich, buying so much for the lunch?"

Zane chuckled softly,"Do you like it?"

Before Yanis could respond, Zane continued asking, "Is this enough effort?"

Feeling speechless, Yanis hesitated before finally opening his mouth, but didn't know what else he should say. The two fell silent for a while. Then, Yanis spoke again."Please don't send anything else. Wendy is here, she can prepare three meals per day."

"Do you not like it?"

"... I do, I do! Just don't send anymore."

Zane made an affirmative sound before saying, "Then I'll think of something else."

Not knowing what else to say, Yannis received another call. She briefly to wrap up it:"Remember to eat your lunch. I have something going on here, so I'm hanging up now."
