Chapter 863: Do You Like Miss Cooke?

Esme said, "No problem. Let's have a meal together after you're done with work."

Lane nodded, "Sure. Are you not going out during this time?"

"Like you, I want to stay in Manches City. I don't feel like going far away," Esme said in a low voice.

Lane didn't show any extra reaction upon hearing Esme's words. He simply nodded slightly and said, "That's good."

Esme pursed her lips and then looked at Bonnie, "Is Miss Cooke alone?"

Bonnie stood up, "Lawyer Phillips invited me for dinner, but I'm ready to go home now."

Saying that, Bonnie looked at Lane, "Lawyer Phillips, why don't you chat with Miss Lee? I'll go back first, and Yanis and I will treat you to dinner another day."

Lane looked at Bonnie and said softly, "Shall I walk you back?"

Bonnie replied, "No need. I came by car, and it's parked across the street."

Seeing Bonnie's response, Lane could only nod, "Alright, you go ahead. Drive safely and let me know when you get home."

"Okay," Bonnie acknowledged, then looked at Esme, "Goodbye, Miss Lee."

"Goodbye," Esme waved to Bonnie.

After Bonnie left, Esme turned to Lane, "Did I interrupt you?"

Lane shook his head, "No, are you alone?"

Esme said, "Libby and Mila are shopping. I didn't want to go in, so I waited outside. I noticed you and came to say hello. I didn't realize Miss Cooke was there, so I came over." Lane raised his hand to check the time, "Since you're with friends, I'll head back."

Upon hearing this, Esme looked at Lane and asked in a low voice, "Lane, do you like Miss Cooke?"

Lane lifted his gaze and looked at Esme, replying softly, "We've known each other for a long time, and we've always been friends."

"We were friends before, but what about in the future?" Esme looked at Lane. "Don't you have any other thoughts about her?"

Lane frowned slightly, "Esme, this is my own business, and Bonnie and I are friends now."

Esme smiled, "Why so serious? I didn't say anything else."

Lane didn't respond to Esme's remark, he just said quietly, "I have other things to attend to, so I'll go back now."

After saying that, Lane turned and walked away.

Esme didn't call out to Lane anymore. She watched his figure disappear from her sight before withdrawing her gaze. "What are you looking at?" Libby walked over and handed Esme a cup of fruit tea. "Three sugars."

Esme took it from her hand, "Weren't you going shopping? Why did you buy a drink?"

Libby took a big sip of the fruit tea, "They were out of stock, so they need to restock. It'll take about half a month."

"So did you buy anything or not?" Esme asked, looking at Libby.

"No, Mila said she wanted to check out another store," Libby said in a low voice.

Esme nodded, "Okay."

"You haven't answered my question yet. What were you looking at just now, staring like a statue? I thought I saw Lawyer Phillips when I came out earlier," Libby said, looking at Esme. Esme took a sip of her fruit tea. "It was him. He was having dinner with Miss Cooke."

Upon hearing this, Libby asked, "Miss Cooke? Is it the one I know?"

Esme nodded. "Yes."

"They... It's unlikely, right? After all, Miss Cooke has someone in her heart, someone she'll never forget. Even if Lawyer Phillips has feelings, it's probably one-sided," Libby said in a low voice. Esme smiled but didn't say anything more.

Libby sighed. "Love truly blinds people."

"I'm not blinded. It's just that you haven't met someone who makes your heart flutter," Esme said.

"I haven't met anyone, and right now, I don't want to. Look at you and Mila, why should I walk down this difficult path?" Libby had some thoughts before, thinking of replaceing a handsome and morally upright boyfriend to experience the taste of love.

But after seeing Mila break off her engagement with Ivan and witnessing Esme's long-standing unrequited love, she instantly lost interest.

Even if he looked like a celestial being, she wouldn't be interested.

Being single was more carefree and comfortable.

In the past, Esme would have tried to persuade Libby, but now she had no intention to do so.

After all, her own life was a mess, and she didn't have the standing to focus on other people's affairs, even those of her close friends. Esme had no interest.

When Mila came over, the two of them looked like they had been deeply affected, standing there with shocked expressions.

"In such a short time, what happened to you two? Did something shocking occur?" Mila asked, looking at them.

Libby spoke up, "Esme saw Lawyer Phillips, but he was with Miss Cooke."

Mila glanced at Esme upon hearing Libby's words. "Miss Cooke?"

Libby nodded. "The Miss Cooke we know."

Mila said, "Lawyer Phillips and Miss Cooke have known each other for a long time. And now that Myles is gone, Miss Cooke won't have feelings for anyone else. If Lawyer Phillips is with her, it must be as a friend, to comfort her or accompany her. You're overthinking it."

This was what Mila said to Esme.

Esme shook her head. "You didn't see the look in his eyes when he looked at Miss Cooke. It's the look that only appears when someone likes another person."

At this point, Esme couldn't resist teasing Mila. "Just like the way you look at Ivan."

Mila said, "... Esme, let me tell you, you've gone too far!"

Libby laughed. "Why don't you two just fight it out and let off some steam?"

Mila and Esme exchanged glances and simultaneously reached out to grab Libby.

The three of them were too busy fooling around to notice Haider and the others standing nearby for quite a while.

Evan looked at the three of them walking away and turned to Haider. "Does Lawyer Phillips like Bonnie?"

Haider furrowed his brows slightly. "Who should I ask if not you?"

Evan said, "Don't you have any thoughts?"

"What thoughts can I have?" Haider asked Evan.

Evan said earnestly, "Actually, you should consider Bonnie's future. She'll have a child later, and she can't live like this forever." Listening to Evan's words, Haider murmured,

"I haven't thought about leaving her alone all the time. I know her temperament. It's not something I'll consider in the coming years."

Evan said, "Can't you at least persuade her? Myles is gone, and her life has to go on. Are you really going to let her be a widow for the rest of her life?"

"How can I persuade her? Should I suggest she get together with Lane? Or arrange a blind date for her?" Haider asked.

Evan said, "... No, what I mean is, sometimes you can say something subtly suggestive in front of her, so she won't be so stubborn about clinging to someone who's no longer there. Life always moves forward, right?"
