Nate

I put a herbal tea on the bedside table and leaned over Maya, lying in our bed, trembling inexorably, without being able to stop. After several attempts, I managed to take her to the bedroom, but Maya did not answer, she did not speak. She had remained to stare into the void and I was terrified.

“Please drink Maya,” I said defeated.

It was as if all the energy from my body had been completely sucked in, I couldn’t think straight anymore, I couldn’t do anything but blame myself. If I had been better, and stronger, I would have prevented all this suffering. I would have prevented all this. Instead, I had failed and now my child was far away, with someone else, probably desperate and I had my hands completely tied.

The intercom rang all over the apartment and I got up, empty inside, and I went to the door. My father arrived in half an hour and was after my mother.

“What happened?” he immediately asked alarmed.

My eyes filled with tears and I almost fell to the ground again, unable to hold on to my legs. I took the judge’s order and gave it to him.

“They take him,” I said with a string of my voice.

My father looked out and took the paper, reading it.

“Where is Maya?” my mother asked I pointed to the camera with my head and she immediately walked into the room.

I walked over to the couch and sat with my hands in my hair.

“I couldn’t stop it, Dad,” I said in despair, “I didn’t do anything,” and my body trembled.

I was useless.

“You couldn’t do anything, you’d make it worse for Maya if you refused to leave him. With the adoption, they have no rights and we can sue everyone for this s**t situation, if you were opposed it would be the other way around”

“How did it get to this point? How is it that even with the adoption they managed to do such a thing?” I looked him in the eye.

“They must have been on a technicality, I don’t know, I have to call Judge Crem and ask him why they got past the adoption. You must now be calm and be strong, for Maya, we will take him back, no one can do anything, I will move seas and mountains to make him come back,” said my father, putting a hand on my shoulder.

“I have to call the Sheppar,” I said with a string of my voice.

My mother came out of the room and closed the door, “Maya doesn’t calm down, maybe I should give her a tranquillizer, so that she can sleep at least for a while,” my mother said.

“She can’t,” I said, “She’s pregnant”.

My mother looked at me, eyes wide open, and then she sat down next to me, passing a hand on my back. I could do nothing but lay my head on her shoulder and let me calm down.

Mr. Sheppar had arrived in a short time. Maya’s mother was in the room with her while my father and Mr Sheppar were in the kitchen. My dad took my laptop and was on the phone. In that short time, he had called Zeke and Chris from the office and had them come immediately. Both of them were on the computer and trying to call some judges they knew while I stood there staring at the void.

My mother was next to me and she was trying to make me react, but I couldn’t. I felt completely empty and I couldn’t even stand next to Maya. How could I help her get up when I could barely do it for myself?

I could hear everyone moving around me, but the sounds didn’t reach my ears. It was like my head was completely detached from my body like I wasn’t answering anymore.

“Maya needs a sedative,” Maya’s mother suddenly heard.

“Maybe a chamomile would relax her,” my mother heard.

“How many weeks is she?” Maya’s father asked.

“Almost fourteen,” I said, continuing to look at the empty “A girl,” I continued.

My mother stroked my back.

“A natural tranquillizer wouldn’t hurt the baby,” Maya’s father said, “I’m going to the pharmacy,” he continued by taking his jacket and walking to the door.

I nodded imperceptibly but did not move.

“He’s been taken to a family home,” my father began by snapping my head at him, “He’s sending me the house file, I’m making arrangements to get him sent to someone we know or at least keep an eye on him. Judge Crem says that in a few days he will unravel the situation, it seems that the adoption documents did not get under their hands for this the social workers managed to enter. For what it’s worth, Mr. Accorson didn’t report it to the social workers, he just asked for a hearing for a custody agreement so he could get his rights. As soon as there was talk of a minor, the social workers came in with their legs taut,” Dad explained, sitting in front of me on the coffee table.

“Are you telling me it’s not even that son of a b***h’s fault?” I said with clenched teeth.

Dad sighed, “In these cases, Nate, forces are set in motion that are always hidden around the corner. It’s always complicated with juvenile cases, you know very well that social workers are always lurking and taking advantage of every moment. Right now, all you have to do is wait for the judge in charge to study the file and figure out there’s no problem. I know it’s hard, but it’s a matter of days.”

“Hard? Days? Try telling Maya, who is desperate over there,” I said with gritted teeth.

My father shook his head, his blond and gray hair was ruffled.

“I know people who take care of children in these situations,” he heard Zeke say, “I can give you the name and try to entrust the child to them, I know them, and I could keep an eye on him since you can’t get near him. I’ll take care of it and keep you updated”

My father nodded.

“Axel doesn’t eat if it’s not from me or Maya, he doesn’t accept the touch of strangers, he doesn’t get changed or washed. Just from me and Maya,” I said, “He won’t even accept you,” I continued.

Axel was wary of strangers, and he only got used to the people around us who were all our relatives and couldn’t get close to him in this case. I clenched my hands and then I put them on my face.

“Maybe if Lucas was there, he’d calm down,” I said, “Do you think you could?” I raised my head to Zeke.

“I’m trying to arrange something, I can’t promise anything. But if I do, you won’t be able to make contact with this Lucas until the baby comes back to you.”

Sigh “I just need to know there’s someone we know”

Zeke nodded and the intercom rang again. Maya’s mother went to open and my sister stormed in.

“I arrived as soon as I heard. Where is Maya?” Jess said, coming towards me and sitting at my other side.

“In her room, she’s in shock,” said our mother.

“Why don’t you give her a sedative?” Jess almost yelled.

“We can’t,” Maya’s mother said.

Jess immediately looked at her frowning and I got up to go to my wife.

“She’s pregnant,” I heard my mother say as I walked into the room.
