Once the baby arrived, he was set on keeping his promise of being the kind of husband and father who could make their little family thrive. These thoughts softened his heart, and he reached for his phone. But this time, he didn't call Selena. Instead, he rang up Derick. When Derick picked up, he was sprawled out on the couch and spoke with a hint of sarcasm, "What's Selena's uncle done this time that needs fixing?"

Easing Selena's worries usually meant dealing with her uncle, whom she adored like no other.

Derick, already in a panic, didn't bother with small talk. He blurted out, "Mr. Everett, your wife got into an accident just outside the company. She's in surgery now, and it's really serious. You need to get here fast!"

An accident outside the office? Images of the crash flashed through Everett's mind from when he'd seen it while leaving work. Could it have been Selena who got hit? Did she really come all the way to see him?

His hands shook violently, and his phone slipped to the floor with a thud.

Everett shot up from his seat and sprinted for the door. He barely made it a few steps before something held him back. Looking down, it was Margot, who must have run out of her room. She'd yanked out her IV in a hurry, blood trickling from her hand. "Everett," she cried, tears streaming down her face. "Are you really leaving me again for her? For that murderer Selena?"

Her voice was raw with pain, "You can't do this to me!"

He tried to pull away but couldn't shake her off.

"Margot," he said, his tone low and firm, veins standing out on his forehead, "Let go."

"No, I won't let you go to her!" she clung even tighter.

Everett, consumed with thoughts of Selena, was out of patience. With a bit of force, he pried Margot's hands away and pushed her gently aside.

"Margot, these past months, I've been here only to help you recover. You know what's between us. Don't push it."

Margot shook her head, refusing to accept it, "It's not true, it's not!"

As he turned away, he signaled to the nurses who had followed, "Keep an eye on her."

The nurses nodded, "Yes!"

Margot reached out, desperate, "Everett..."

But he was already striding away, not looking back.

Once in his car, his hands were trembling even more. He took a few deep breaths to steady himself before gunning the engine and racing towards the hospital.

Late into the night, Selena stirred awake. The familiar scent of hospital disinfectant, the sterile white walls, the all-too-familiar room

Her hand instinctively moved to her stomach, now flat...

It had been a choice-her or the baby.

She'd survived, but did that mean the baby was gone?

Tears welled up, and her heart felt as if it would break.

Everett stood with his back to her, staring into the pitch-black night. Not a single star to be seen.

When he heard her soft sobs, he turned quickly and came to her side.

""You're awake."

He took her cold hand in his, but she pulled away, nails leaving trails of red on his skin.

She glared at him with fury, her
