The man's brows knitted together tightly. "What do you mean by that?" Losing a child was a heart-wrenching experience for her, but as the father, he was struggling just as much.

At first, he hadn't been thrilled about the baby arriving. But over time, he warmed up to the idea of this unexpected new life. He found himself spending more time flipping through parenting books than work documents. For someone who never bothered with short videos, he was suddenly drawn to clips of kids and even started following a bunch of parenting influencers. Both he and she had been eagerly awaiting their Mateo's arrival. Selena looked intently at the man in front of her. Despite him being the husband she'd shared a bed with for years, her closest companion, he now seemed like a stranger. She couldn't tell which of his words were genuine and which were deceitful. She only trusted what she'd seen and lived through.

"Even a tiger wouldn't harm its cubs."

How could he bear it... How could he be so heartless, sacrificing their child for Margot's? They'd agreed on a divorce long ago, and now that the child was gone, maybe this was how fate had written their story. No matter how much they struggled or stalled, they'd end up back where they started.

Selena closed her eyes, letting the tears fall. After a moment, she wiped them away and looked at him again. "Everett." She whispered his name, her gaze drifting past his shoulder to Newport's night sky. "We're done. You can relax now. Tomorrow, I'll get in touch with a lawyer to draw up the divorce papers. Just sign them."

Saying it out loud, she felt nothing. Turns out, at the lowest point of despair, there's a strange calmness, where the world's noise and lights seem irrelevant. She didn't want to see or hear anything; she just wanted freedom.

"Whether you give me money or whatever you need for your reputation, I'll cooperate. Just sign, as long as we can divorce, that's all I want!"

Everett's eyes widened, staring into her empty gaze. She was talking about divorce like it was just another mundane topic, like discussing the weather. They'd just lost a child, and she'd barely escaped death. Yet, the first thing on her mind was divorce?

Everett couldn't wrap his head around it, let alone accept it. He jumped up, hands shoved in his pockets, his stare cold and intense. "Selena, I never wanted a divorce! And I'm not going to!" As far as he was concerned, she would always be Mrs. Bennett.

"Heh." Selena laughed. At first, it was

a quiet chuckle with her head down, but soon she couldn't hold it back. Her laughter grew louder, tears flowing once more. She lifted her head to look at him, her tear-filled eyes blurring his handsome face, making it look absurd.

What had she ever seen in this man? She laughed at how he could brazenly say such shameless things and at her own past foolishness. Why had she ever fallen for someone so cold and selfish?

She should have seen it sooner. This Everett wasn't the same sickly young man she had met and saved in the countryside. He didn't remember her, didn't love her. He only brought her misery, pain, and heartbreak, time and again.

Selena didn't say a word, just

laughed and cried, leaving Everett in

a state of panic. He had always prided himself on being in control yet now, he felt like she was slipping through his fingers like sand. He didn't understand this chaos. inside him, but one thing was certain-he wasn't going to divorce her.
