“Don’t cry, you’ve still got me,” he soothed.

He held her quietly, letting her tears flow, before gently nudging her towards her room to rest.

After closing her door, Dilan wandered back to the living room.

He picked up the card and note left by Rosalynn from the coffee table, examining them under the dim light.

Suddenly, the doorbell pierced the silence, startling him.

Jolted, Dilan set down the card and note and hurried to answer the door.

Expecting Rosalynn and Brian, he was surprised to replace someone else entirely.

Peering at the unfamiliar woman, Dilan inquired cautiously, “Who are you looking for?”

“Is this Jamir’s place?” the woman asked.

“Yes, who are you?”

The woman hesitated, then answered, “I’m Shari Dixon, a friend of your brother.”

Dilan was taken aback.

Another friend of Jamir’s?

He examined Shari for a brief moment, then stepped aside to let her in.

Shari entered, her eyes quickly scanning the layout of the place.

Her gaze landed on the card and note on the coffee table, and she paused, a shadow of emotion crossing her face.

Dilan walked over, bent down, and stowed away the card and note.

“Please, have a seat.”

Shari nodded and settled onto the sofa.

She inquired, “Did someone come by just now?”

“Yes.”

Dilan cleared away the cups Rosalynn and Brian had used, then offered Shari a glass of water.

Accepting the glass, Shari expressed her thanks before asking, “The visitors were Brian Hughes and his wife, weren’t they?”

Surprised, Dilan asked, “How did you know that?”

Shari took a sip of water and replied, “Their names were on the note.”

Dilan sank into the sofa, remaining silent.

Setting down the glass, Shari ventured, “They came to offer you financial help, didn’t they?”

Again, Dilan chose not to respond.
