Chapter 5 Win Your Wife Back
“I didn’t do it, so why should I admit to anything?”
Natalie balled her fists, letting her nails dig into her palms. That seemed like the only way she could control the chill that threatened to consume her heart.
Ever since she married Henry, he believed she was a sly woman with ulterior motives—even though she had never asked him for anything in the past few years.
In his eyes, her genuine feelings for him were nothing but a joke.
He never trusted her.
Natalie felt like her soul had been crushed, though she stubbornly put on a brave front the way she always did.
For a brief second, Henry seemed to notice the flicker of sorrow in her eyes.
Why would a woman like her feel sad or hurt?
She was just pretending!
Henry clenched his jaw and snarled out, “You’re claiming that you didn’t do it? I can’t believe how shameless you are!”
Natalie didn’t have the strength to continue arguing with Henry. “You can believe what you want. Either way, I don’t know what photos you’re talking about.”
Then, she opened the door to get out.
Perhaps overwhelmed by her emotions, as soon as she got out of the car, she felt pain in her abdomen.
Natalie’s heart stopped. She quickly tapped on the door of the car. “Henry, my stomach hurts. Please take me to the hospital!”
The pain intensified.
Natalie grew afraid when she thought about the baby.
She kept tapping on the car. “Henry! I’m really in a lot of pain …”
Henry simply eyed her coldly. “Aren’t you tired of always using these tricks, Natalie?”
Few people came to the outskirts of the city. There were barely any other cars around.
Henry was the only one she could ask for help.
Natalie had a pleading look on her face. “I’m not playing any games! Please, I’m begging you … My stomach hurts badly … Hospital … Take me to the hospital … Please …”
Henry continued to stare indifferently at her. He remained unmoved. “I won’t fall for your tricks! Natalie Shepherd, even if you dropped dead in front of me, I wouldn’t care at all.”
Then, he slammed on the gas pedal and drove off.
“Henry! Henry!” Natalie wanted to stop him, but her knees buckled, and she fell to the ground.
…
An hour later, Natalie was at the hospital.
The doctor instructed, “Even though it’s past the first trimester, you still have to be careful. You have a weak body, so you need to get enough rest. Also, you need to care for your emotional well-being as well.”
Natalie looked exhausted. “Thank you, doctor. I’ll remember that.”
“You can leave once the drip has been fully administered,” the doctor said before leaving the ward.
Leslie, who had been sitting beside Natalie the whole time, growled out, “Henry’s such a bastard! How heartless of him! Thank goodness you called me in time, or else—”
“Let’s drop the subject. I don’t want to talk about him,” Natalie cut in.
Leslie sighed and accompanied Natalie in silence.
After getting some rest, Natalie asked, “By the way, did you replace out what I asked you to check for me?”
“Oh! I nearly forgot about that.” Leslie chuckled and fished out a business card from her handbag.
She passed it to Natalie and explained, “This is Mr. Costa’s name card. He’s the one in charge of organizing Dawn Corporation’s Creative Visions Competition.
“He’ll be attending a charity gala tomorrow night. You can go over and try to promote yourself to him.”
Dawn Corporation was a well-known construction firm in the city. They had high standards for the architects they hired.
Natalie had previously created many well-received architectural designs. But for the sake of earning money to pay off some debts, she sold her designs to other people.
Therefore, those designs had nothing to do with her anymore.
If she wanted to work for Dawn Corporation, she only had one option.
She needed to do well in the Creative Visions Competition.
However, the competition wasn’t open to everyone. She needed someone to recommend her.
Natalie took the business card.
She had to get a job at Dawn Corporation right away. She needed a source of income to support her and her baby.
…
After driving back to the office, Henry was caught up in several meetings.
By the time they ended, he was visibly tired.
As soon as he sat at his desk, his phone rang.
Owen was calling.
Henry knew what the call was for.
Feeling a slight headache coming on, Henry answered the call. “Grandpa.”
“If you still see me as your grandpa, you should hurry up and win Natalie back!” Owen sounded upset.
Henry sighed exasperatedly. “Did you really believe her nonsense, Grandpa?”
Infuriated, Owen began to rebuke Henry, “Stop it! I know Natalie has moved out! I’m going to be frank with you. If you don’t win her back, don’t bother coming to see us again!”
Owen dropped the call.
Henry rubbed the spot between his brows in frustration.
Would he go and try to persuade Natalie?
Never!
There was no telling what that woman was up to this time!
He would never let her cross the line and take advantage of him again!
Once he was done with work, he made the trip back to the house he shared with Natalie.
Over the last three years, the number of times he returned to this place could be counted on one’s fingers.
Even the butler was shocked to see him. “You’re back, Mr. Chase.”
Henry subconsciously glanced at the stairs.
In the past, whenever he came back here, Natalie would fly down the stairs.
The house seemed … strangely quiet today.
“Did she actually move out?” Henry asked indifferently.
The butler nodded. “She did. While cleaning, I found three exquisitely wrapped boxes in the trash. I was afraid there were valuables inside them, so I didn’t toss them out. I left them on the cabinet in the bedroom.”
Henry hummed in acknowledgment before heading to the bedroom upstairs.
When he opened the door, he couldn’t help but frown.
Why … did the house seem so empty to him?
Was it just because Natalie was gone?
Hadn’t he always found her too noisy and talkative?
He should be happy that she moved out …
Henry walked over to the cabinet.
There were three boxes placed on top of it.
One of them jogged his memory somewhat.
It seemed to be the gift Natalie had prepared for his birthday three years ago.
At the time, he didn’t even bother to look at it.
In the following years, he didn’t even bother to come back on his birthday.
Henry never thought she would have continued preparing a gift for him.
There was one for every year.
