David pov

I double checked if I had masked my scent properly. Right now, I was face to face with one of them. The young girl flipped her dark brown hair which was a sharp contrast to her pale skin. I looked straight in to her eyes as she gave me a friendly smile.

“Hello. My name is Caroline. But you can call me carol.” She introduced herself. “I would go to shake your hand but I can’t. You are standing in the sun.” She stated.

“Huh?” I was confused. This vampire girl definitely was friendly. She didn’t seem like a threat. But I shouldn’t just trust her too soon right? I mean she could just pretend to be nice and suddenly attack. I tried to read her face. Her face only showed signs of innocence.

“What is a human doing in these woods all alone?” she questioned as she tilted her head to a side, making her soft wavy hair fall to one side.

I blinked. “Hu….. Human?” I stammered. Oh yes. She will be thinking that I was human.

She giggled. “Of course. You most probably wouldn’t know. I think you most probably got lost in this forest.” She started to explain as she sat down on the ground. She leaned against a tree trunk and sighed. “This is not the human world. You actually must have wandered too far and crossed the magical boundary. This is the enchanted woods. All kinds of mystical creatures live here.” She said as she smacked her b***d red lips. She smiled, showing her pearly whites. Wow. I never thought a vampire would be so friendly.

I cleared my throat. I better play along. “Ummm….. Are you lost as well?” I asked, trying to keep up my act. She giggled again. “No. I will tell you only if you promise not to freak out.” She said. I took a deep breath and nodded. “Ok. Tell me.”

“I am a vampire.” She said softly and showed her fangs. Her eyes suddenly started to glow red as she exposed her vampire side. It was not new to me. I had faced them in the war. But I guess it is time to act scared.

I gulped and looked away. “S…s…so are you going to kill me?” I questioned. Her giggles made me look at her once again.

“No silly. We are not allowed to kill humans like that. Actually it is against the law. We may feed on humans but we cannot kill. I am not hungry right now so no. I am not interested in compelling you.” She said as she grinned. Her fangs and eyes have now returned to normal.

“Compel?” I asked.

She nodded. “Yes. We have the power to compel our victims before feeding. But to tell the truth, I don’t like human b***d. It is too fatty.” She added.

I chuckled to myself. A health conscious vampire. Nice. “What are you doing here? I mean why have you wandered away from your home?” she asked me.

What do I tell her? I looked at my feet and sighed. “Home?” I asked as I glanced at her. I saw her expression soften a bit.

“Are you homeless?” she asked. “I have heard that many of our people feed from homeless people.” She added.

I chuckled sadly. Homeless. Perhaps that is what I am now. “I think you can say that.” I replied. My voice sounded far too sad than I thought it would. “Maybe that what I am now. Homeless.” I added, my eyes suddenly started to sting . Memories of the days I spent with my father and grandparents started to flood my mind. The good days of my childhood. The happy days I spent with dad. The days grandpa and grandma would take me out and play with me. The days before we reached puberty. Before all my friends found their wolves. I looked away from the young girl who was now staring at me with sad eyes.

“Damn these tears.” I cursed. I didn’t want to cry. Specially not in front of a vampire chick whom I had just met.

“Hey. It is ok. Really.” She cooed, making me look at her. She looked as if she was feeling sorry for me. She stood up from where she was sitting and started to walk towards me. I looked around. The sun was going to set and the intensity of the heat had reduced. She walked forward and stopped once again. “I want to give you a hug. You look like you need one.” She said softly. “I promise I won’t hurt you.” She added.

I hesitated. Not because she might hurt me. She could try, but I can protect myself. I furrowed my eyebrows and took a cautious step forward. I could feel Finn was constantly on his guard. I walked slowly towards her and let her wrap her cold hands around me. She rested her head on my chest as she held on to my torso for a little while and then she let me go.

“From what you had said, I feel that you weren’t always homeless. Do you want to tell me what happened?” she asked, surprising me a little. I smiled at her.

“You are so nice Carol. I never thought vampires were nice.” I told her honestly. She smiled back. “That doesn’t answer my question.” She chuckled. “I don’t even know your name.” She added.

I laughed dryly. I couldn’t deny that I was starting to feel comfortable with her. “Maybe we can sit down and talk?” I suggested. She smiled and agreed. We walked together towards a tree which had low lying branches so that we could sit on it and talk for sometime.

“So tell me your name.” She said as soon as we managed to sit down. “My name is David. And you are right. I became homeless after the death of my grandma, actually I was forced to leave my home.” I told her. She listened to my story attentively as I poured down my emotions. I ended up telling her practically everything, leaving out the part of being werewolves and my mate. I just told her about being accused of my grandma’s death and how my ‘family’ had rejected me after the death of my father.

Before I knew it, my chest was heaving and tears were streaming down my cheeks. I felt her soft, cold hand on my cheeks as she wiped my tears away.

“Oh my god. I am so sorry you went through all that.” He voice quivered as she spoke. I sniffled and looked at her. She too was crying. Was my life story that depressing? “And I thought my life was sad.” She added, making me curious.

“What about your life?” I asked. She sighed through her tears.

“Nothing. Being the heir to the throne is really tiring. Everyone expects so much from me. It is always training and learning. I kind of don’t have any friends. Just work and train and then studies. I was not even allowed to go to school with other vampire kids. I am home schooled and I kind of crave for human interaction.” She replied.

I smirked. So that explained why she wanted to speak to me as soon as she saw me. Perhaps I’m in luck. I also need to talk to someone who is other than my lycan.

By the time we finished speaking, the sun had set and darkness of the night was starting to spread.

“I should go. My father will throw a fit if he replaces out that I wandered away from the palace. He will send the guards everywhere to look for me. It will soon be time for my training.” She said as she pouted. She jumped from the branch and looked up. She grinned from ear to ear. “I loved talking to you. I will come back tomorrow. Please be here. Same time?” she asked.

I smiled at her and nodded. “I enjoyed talking to you too. I’ll wait for you here.” I said.

She looked at the sky and her eyes widened. “Oh no. I am too late. I should really go. Bye. See you tomorrow.” She said and disappeared in to the trees.

I breathed out a huge breath I didn’t know I was holding in and lied down on my back. I stared at the leaves swaying with the wind. The sky looked like a mixture of red and blue with a hint of purple hue. The red and orange clouds looked like cotton candy that swirled in the blue background. It was mesmerising. But the happiness and contentment it gave didn’t compare to what the small conversation with Carol gave to me.

Someone is happy. Finn muttered in my mind. I chuckled. Yeah. Could you blame me? I haven’t had a real conversation with anyone for so long. I replied.

Hey. Our conversations were very real. Finn retorted making me laugh.

Sure. But you are me. I’m sure you also enjoyed it. I said and relaxed on the tree. It was getting dark. I should climb higher to reduce the risk of being discovered.

I climbed to a higher branch and relaxed on one of them. Yeah. Sharing it with her had actually made the burden feel lighter. Finn said after sometime.

I smiled and closed my eyes. Good night Finn. I think we will be just fine. I told him as I felt the soothing silence the night envelop the whole forest. This night had been the best since I had left the pack. Maybe, just maybe this was the beginning of a better life.
