David couldn’t wait for evening to arrive. He had never felt so eager to meet someone before. He sat on the shore as he counted the ripples of water caressing the shore. He took a pebble and threw it in to the water, making more ripples in the calm water of the creek. He smiled at it. The water was calm but it held many secrets. It definitely lead to a larger water body where more dangers and treasures were hidden, just like his life. He may look calm but he had to prepare for some thing big. He was going to fight back. At least he had to replace out who was the real one behind his grandma’s death. And who ever that was, will have to pay for what he had done.

“David.” Carol’s voice came from behind. David stood up from his spot and faced the young vampire princess. He smiled as he walked towards her, who was waiting for him in the shade.

“Hey.” He greeted.

“Hi.” She said and looked around. She frowned as she noticed the claws marks on the trunks of the trees. “David. I don’t think it is safe for a human like you to live all alone in the forest like this.” She said. “Yesterday I was told that carcasses of dead animals were found in the forest. That could only mean a wolf is in these parts of the forest.” She explained, making David’s heart race.

Oh no! He should have been more careful with the left overs of his food.

“You mean?” David asked, his heart hammering in his chest.

She looked at him and smiled reassuringly. “You have survived to this day. I hope you will be fine. Haven’t you seen or come across any wolf like creature? There are werewolves in these forests too. But they live on the other side of the forest. They don’t come near our territory.” She said.

David licked his lips nervously. He couldn’t afford to be discovered by the vampires. What was he going to do now? Carol noticed how nervous David was and placed her hand on his thigh, in an attempt to make him feel a little better.

“David.” She whispered. “Don’t be scared. I won’t let anything happen to you.” She reassured. “Actually, the werewolves are our enemy. My father has declared war on them. So if any wolf is in these parts of the forest, daddy would want to arrest him and interrogate him. Perhaps torture him as well.” She added. She glanced at him, and realised that David was still uneasy.

“David. Don’t worry too much. I don’t think they will hurt humans. They are just not on the same page as us. Daddy is really pissed off at them about something.” She tried to explain.

David thought about it. Perhaps he could replace out the real reason for them to declare war on the first place. “Why? I mean why did your father declare war? They must have done something really bad to make the king angry.” David asked, careful not to sound too interested. He didn’t want Carol to start suspecting him.

But his question was left unanswered when Carol just shrugged. “Dad doesn’t disclose secrets like to me yet. I’m just 17 years old. But perhaps when I turn 18, he will tell me. When I turn 18, I will be considered a fully matured vampire and then dad will hand over some of the duties of the ruler to me since I am the crown Princess.” She replied.

David smiled. The vampire clan is some what similar to the werewolf pack. In both communities, 18 is considered the age of maturity. “You must be excited.” David muttered.

She just smirked. “To tell the truth, I am more excited about meeting my beloved. I hope I replace him on my eighteenth birthday.” She said and she sighed dreamily.

David frowned. “Beloved?” he asked.

Carol grinned at David and she started to tell him more about vampires and their beloved other half. From what she told him, he found out that their beloved was a lot like mates. But the vampires only realise them when they touch. Werewolves sense their mates from the sense of smell in addition to the sparks of the mate bond.

“Wow.” David gasped. He truly was amazed at the similarities of the werewolves and the vampires. “That is awesome. It would be amazing to replace someone who would love you unconditionally.” He whispered. Carol giggled and nodded frantically. David thought her giggles were melodious. He smiled and gazed in to her hazel brown eyes which was twinkling in excitement. He felt that he was getting lost in to those beautiful brown orbs as he stared deep in to it. A faint smell of pine scent hit his nose, intoxicating him.

David blinked. What was happening to him? He couldn’t stop himself from admiring Carol’s place face. Her dark brown hair swayed with the soft breeze and she continued to chat away about her beloved. She told him about her fantasies of how she would treat him.

But nothing she said made any sense to him. He could see that she was speaking non stop, but non of her words had any meaning to it. All he could focus on was her beautiful brown eyes, her dark red lips and the soft wavy hair.

Finally, when carol noticed that David was not responding to her, she snapped her fingers in front of his face, bringing David out of his daze.

“Are you ok?” she asked, as she furrowed her eyebrows.

David let out a whoosh of breath he didn’t know he was holding and nodded. “Yeah. I am fine.” He gulped and looked away, noticing that the sun was about to set. “Aren’t you late?” he asked. He definitely was looking forward to meet her the whole day, but when he did, what he felt has had him confused. Was he attracted to her? But why? He was not the kind of person who was after girls. He had saved himself for his mate his whole life. He had successfully avoided feeling attracted to anyone except his mate. However his mate had other ideas. Though it hurt him, he had already put it behind him. He had other things to worry about. He didn’t want to waste his time on someone who doesn’t see his worth.

Carol sighed and pouted. “Time flies when you actually are enjoying it.” She said as she stood up. “David. I’ll come again. But seriously, I don’t think you should stay in the forest.” She said.

“But where else do I live?” he asked with a shrug.

Carol thought for a moment before saying anything. “Maybe I can make daddy agree for you to stay with us in the palace.”

“What!!!” David practically screamed flabbergasted. His eyes and mouth wide open. How was he going to stay in that palace? That would be so risky. He would have to keep Finn carefully hidden. How was he going to take him out for a run?

So many questions started to invade David’s mind but soon he was brought back to reality by Carol’s sweet giggles.

“I know. I will talk to daddy. It will be scary for a human to live with us but you will be under my protection. No one will dare hurt you.” She said. “I am leaving. I will be back tomorrow. See you then. Bye David.” She said and ran off.

David stared as the young princess ran away with her hair flowing with the soft breeze as she moved. He inhaled deeply, the soft pine scent was so intoxicating. “She smells amazing.” He muttered to himself. He kept his gaze fixed on her retreating figure until she was no longer in sight, his lips frozen in a silly smirk.

Hey David. Finn’s gruff voice got his attention. Hey Finn. You have been quiet the whole day. David responded, suddenly realising that he had not spoken to Finn since he woke up. David was quiet surprised that he did not try to call Finn himself. It seems that his mind was preoccupied with the thoughts of his new vampire friend.

Finn smirked. Yes. I was feeling weird today. Now I know why. Finn replied.

What is it? David asked his lycan.

Oh it is for me to know and you to replace out buddy. Finn replied making David g***n. But David knew better than to plead with his lycan. Besides he had more serious issues to discuss.

Hey Finn. What do you think about what Carol just said. David asked.

I think it is better if we go to her place. Then we will have food and not worry about hunting to survive. Finn reasoned.

Ok. But how do we go for a run? David inquired.

They sleep during the day. We can go out then. Finn replied. David smiled and climbed up the tree closest to them to get some rest.

Yeah. I think I’ll like that. David replied. Finn smirked. So that you will be close to Carol? Finn teased. David chuckled in response. What do you think about her? David asked.

Finn’s smirk grew wider. She is nice. Was the reply.

That’s it? Just nice? David asked.

Finn grinned and chose not to reply. Instead, he retreated to the back of David’s mind. David rolled his eyes. “Typical Finn.” David muttered and soon he fell asleep.
