David pov.

Watching them drink b***d like juice was nauseating. I tried to ignore them and concentrate on the food in front of me. Her cousins were nice and friendly. There was one of them who was training to become a war general. The younger two were still in school which meant they will have to leave for school after the training.

“So David. You going to learn to kickass?” Evan, the older cousin asked.

“I guess.” I replied. “Dad used to train me before he…..”

“Died?” he asked. I smiled and nodded.

“Train you?” he inquired frowning at me. I bit my lips. I should be careful with my words. Humans don’t normally train like that, do they?

“His dad most probably was in the army Evan. Don’t ask him about his dead father. He had already told us that he died in a war so that is the only explanation.” Carol responded, making me sigh. “I don’t want to ruin the mood by talking about it. So no more discussions of his family. Ok?” she stated.

Evan smirked. “Well, ok. I better get used to being ordered around by you. Once you replace your beloved your dad will pass the crown to you little cuz.” He said still smirking at her.

Carol glared at him but smirked mischievously. “Hmm. I think you will replace yours sooner.” She said. Evan chuckled and stood up from his seat.

“Yeah I can’t wait to replace her. Be prepared to get traumatized with constant kissing.” He said making Carol g***n.

Evan laughed and gave me a friendly pat on the shoulder. “There will be a blast next Sunday. And you must come David.” He grinned at Carol. “I hope I replace my beloved that night. So Carol can have a glimpse of how life would be after replaceing hers.”

“Shut up Evan now scram. You are late to your training.” She hissed. Evan laughed as he left. I was grinning from ear to ear after seeing the playful exchange between them.

“Ugh. That idiot is turning eighteen. Come one David. It is time for us to go and meet our trainer. You will love him.” Carol hastened to leave and all of us followed her.

Soon I was in their training ground with her two younger cousins.

The training was somewhat similar to how wolves do. I must say that Carol was pretty good at it. She managed to beat her trainer who was bigger than her. When she called me to join them, I did. I enjoyed every the session so much. I had missed training like I used to back in the pack.

I started to hit the punching bag which was at one side of the training area while the Carol and her cousins wrestled. I must say, this is therapeutic. I looked around after sometime, when I felt the atmosphere had suddenly gone too silent. Everyone was staring at me in astonishment. Carol’s mouth was wide open while the others stared at me without blinking.

“Those punches are mean. Are you sure you are human young lad?” the trainer asked, grinning from ear to ear. I chuckled nervously.

“Wow David. You sure seem to be good at fights. I want to fight you.” Carol said. I scratched my head. I didn’t want to fight her. I just didn’t want to hurt her. She might be thinking that I was human and I would be weaker than her but in reality, lycans would be much stronger than them.

I chuckled nervously. “I’ll go easy on you.” She said. I raised my eyebrows at her.

“But…..” I bit my lips.

“Males cannot fight females.” Her trainer stated. I breathed out a sigh of relief. Saved.

“But he is a human.” Carol responded. But the trainer shrugged. “Rules set by the king, princess. I can’t go against them. Human or not he is a male so I can’t allow that.” He said and wiped his forehead with his towel.

Carol rolled her eyes. “Ill just talk to daddy….”

“No. And that is final. He maybe human but he still is a male. So no.” King Richard’s voice surprised all of us. Everyone turned and bowed in respect. Was he watching us the whole time?

“But dad.” Carol tried to protest but her father was not going to listen. I was kind of glad. I most certainly didn’t want to fight her in the fear of hurting her. How could I fight someone with a heart of gold? She was precious and I want to protect her. I don’t want to wrestle or fight with her in any way, even for training. She deserved all the happiness in the world.

“No buts Carol. You are the princess of this kingdom. Only female fighters against you during training.” He said and walked away. Carol pouted and looked at me.

“Well, I won’t let anyone else fight against you. They might hurt you.” She said making me chuckle.

“Right, training is over for tonight princess. You may leave now.” Her trainer bowed down and left the training ground.

“it is time for studies. Mrs. Cosmo is not someone to mess with.” She muttered under her breath.

We joined her class and she was right. She was one hell of a teacher. She didn’t even allow me to sit in her class until she was certain that king Richard had allowed me to.

She took an old book with yellow pages and looked us through her spectacles.

“So. Today our lesson is about another species- werewolves.” She said and took out a flash card with a picture of a wolf on it.

“Werewolves are one of the many species living in the magical forest. They have the ability to morph into humans when they want to. But they are weaker than vampires. But stronger than the rest of the other species we have learnt about.” She said and took another flashcard.

“You see, their weakness is silver and wolfsbane. They cannot function well and it also can be fatal. It depends on how it is used.” Mrs. Cosmo said.

“Is that why daddy had those vines grown and replaced the bronze gates with silver?” Carol inquired. Ms Cosmo glared at her.

“Class is not where you should discuss about the king’s decisions.” She stated and started to go through the yellow pages of the book she had.

Carol rolled her eyes and started to fiddle with her hair. She was annoyed, but she most probably was trying to stay quiet.

“David!” Mrs. Cosmo’s voice was loud enough to startle anyone who wasn’t paying attention when she called out my name.

“Tell me, what are you going to do after learning about us and other magical creatures?” she asked.

“Well. I like to learn about new things. So this opportunity is an excellent way to learn about a world which I never knew existed. And besides Carol is my friend, so I’d like to know about her kind.” I answered. I was sure that my answer would impress her until she glared at me with anger.

“How despicable!” she hissed. “How dare you address her royal Highness like that, you lowly human!”. She spat and started to take slow steps towards me. She would have looked intimidating to me had I not faced worse situations in the past. Nonetheless, her reaction shocked me.

My jaw dropped open as she reached where I was sitting and flinched a little when she banged on the desk. “Don’t you dare repeat that again.” She warned.

“Mrs. Cosmo. He is right. He is my friend and I don’t mind him calling me that.” Carol said. She was clearly frustrated. But Mrs. Cosmo just pushed her spectacles down on her nose and glared at her.

“His royal Highness the king had trusted me to teach you the lessons you would need when you would become queen, princess. Which means I would have to follow each and every protocol of the kingdom. No commoner is to address your highness by name. And if that person is a lowly human, I have more reasons to forbid him addressing you like that.” She declared and walked to her desk.

I stared at her as her long gown swept the floor as she walked away. The sound of her heels clicking filled the room, as both of us fell completely silent.

I blinked and gulped down the accumulated saliva in my mouth. Wow. Talk about being a strict teacher. I looked at Carol who was scowling in frustration and waited for her to look in my direction. I mouthed ‘it’s ok’ as soon as she did. She pouted in response making me chuckle inwardly. She looked so cute when she pouts. I would love to take those full red lips in mine and show her how good it feels to be loved. I wanted to hold her tight and pour all my love in my embrace.

I shook my head. What was I thinking?

No. I cannot think like that. How can I think about her like that? She was the princess of this kingdom. She was waiting for her beloved. She had told me herself that she was excited about meeting him. She took pity on me and saw me as a friend, when she saw me helpless. I cannot take advantage of her kindness. What would she think if she knew I felt like this? I mentally scolded myself and tried to focus on the rest of Mrs. Cosmo’s lesson. But whatever she did during the rest of the class was just a blur. All what I could think of was the precious gem sitting a few feet away from me while Mrs. Cosmo’s voice blabbered nonsense in the background.

I stole glances at her every now and then. That was the only thing that I found interesting in Mrs. Cosmo’s class. As time passed by, I realised one thing. She had conquered my heart without even trying.
