Saving His Feral Mate -
Chapter 30: She missed me
Max POV
I woke up early in the morning and before I opened my eyes, I knew something was off. I was laying on a comfortable and soft surface, instead of the makeshift branch bed in the tree. I also didn’t hear the birds chirping or feel the morning breeze on my naked skin.
My eyes shot open and I abruptly sat up. I scanned the room and frowned when I realized that it was Jo’s room. How the hell did I end up here? Did he bring me back? I was brought out of my thoughts, when I heard Jo speak.
“Good morning, Mate. Did you sleep well?” He asked and my head spun towards his voice. I found him laying next to me on the bed, he was watching me with an amused smirk on his face.
“What the hell did you do? How did I get back here?” I growled out the questions, feeling a bit panicked.
“I didn’t do anything, it just so happens your wolf has a crush on me.” He said proudly and shrugged his shoulders. My wolf? What the hell is he talking about? This man is crazier than I am.
“You need to see a doctor, I think you’re losing your marbles. I don’t have a wolf.” I replied and he chuckled.
“How do you think you got here?” He asked, making me frown. The last thing I remember, is lying down on the little bed I made in the trees and I must of fallen asleep. I don’t remember anything else after that.
“Your wolf is just as stunning as you are and equally as terrifying.” He joked, while shaking his head. He’s got to be f*****g with me, why would he bring up my wolf?
“That’s not funny. I haven’t heard from my wolf, since the time I stuck a dagger through my mates heart.” I gritted out.
“What’s her name?” He asked curiously, ignoring my hostility.
“Fall, short for Fallon.” I replied, while lost in my own thoughts.
“Fallon.” He repeated the name, like he was testing it out.
“She scared the s**t out of me when she snuck in here last night.” He said, while shaking his head and letting out a chuckle. I glared at him, I don’t know what kind of sick game he’s playing, but this isn’t funny. I miss my wolf more than anything and making these type of jokes is offside.
“Listen, I don’t know what the f**k your problem is, but I’m done here. I don’t have a wolf and the next time you bring me back here without my consent, I’ll put a dagger through your heart.” I threatened, as I stood from the bed. I didn’t actually mean it, but I was confused and angry. I needed to get away from here.
“I didn’t bring you here, Fallon did. I swear.” He said, while putting his hands up in surrender when he saw how angry I was getting. All of the amusement on his face was replaced with concern.
“I need to go.” I blurted out, while quickly making my way towards the bedroom door.
I grabbed the handle and swung the door open, before a voice in my head caused me to stop in my tracks.
‘He’s not lying. I brought us back to our mate while you were sleeping.” Fallon said sheepishly. My mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. My wolf hasn’t spoken to me in years, this must be a dream. That’s it, I have to be dreaming right now.
‘You’re not dreaming.’ Fallon replied to my thoughts.
‘Why now? Why would you come back now?’ I asked in disbelief.
‘Jo, he’s our second chance mate. He’s nothing like Seth, he’s good for us. I couldn’t stand being away from him, so I brought us back where we belong.’ She replied softly and I could hear the sadness in her tone.
‘He’s not our mate, Fall. Get that crazy idea out of your head.’ I growled.
‘Inhale Max. Now that I’m back, you’ll recognize him.’ She instructed. I hesitate for a second, but did as she asked and breezed in deeply.
I had been so angry and confused, that I hadn’t even noticed the intoxicating smell of musk and sandalwood. It was distracting and I was struggling to focus on anything other than the scent. I glanced behind me and found Jo watching me curiously from the bed. He didn’t say anything and was waiting patiently, clearly aware of the internal battle I was having.
‘I don’t want a mate.’ I said to Fall, in a frustrated tone while looking away from Jo.
‘I’ll keep bringing us back here. This is where we belong, with him.’ She said in a defiant tone. I almost smiled hearing her stubbornness. I missed it so much, she was always the voice of reason. Even when we met our first mate. She was leery of him, I was the one that was naive and brushed off all the red flags.
‘Why did you leave me? I needed you.’ I asked, changing the subject. My voice cracked, even though I tried to keep my emotions under control.
‘I’m sorry, Max, I failed you. Losing our mate broke me, I didn’t want to live anymore. You were the stronger one out of the two of us. Your will to survive is the only reason we have a second chance mate.’ She replied and I heard the hope in her tone, when she said the last sentence.
‘I’ve been alone for so long, I don’t know if I can handle living amongst people again.’ I said truthfully.
‘How about we start with putting on some pants and taking it one day at a time.’ She teased and I internally chuckle. I missed her snarky attitude. We always had fun little banters back and forth.
‘Why would you care if I wear pants? You walk around naked all the time?’ I countered.
‘I’m a wolf, it’s normal. A naked chick walking around with cowboy boots and a machete doesn’t quite classify as normal.’ She replied with a chuckle.
‘Fine, but I refuse to wear underwear. All they’re good for is wedgies.’ I grumbled.
‘Deal, now go back and talk to our mate.’ She said excitedly.
I let out a heavy sigh. I wasn’t sure if I was ready for all this, but having my wolf back makes me want to at least try.
‘I’ll go back, but we move at my pace. Don’t you go marking him without my consent. Also, don’t ever leave me again.’ I said sternly.
‘I promise, I won’t mark him until you’re ready and I won’t ever leave you. I owe you my life.’ She replied and I could hear the sincerity in her tone.
I took a deep breath and spun around to face Jo. He was sitting on the edge of the bed and was watching me with curious, yet concerned eyes.
“I’m sorry.” I mumbled under my breath and he smiled at my words.
“I’m sorry, I don’t think I heard you?” He teased.
“Shut up. You heard me.” I spat back.
He chuckled, as he stood up from the bed and came over to where I stood at the door.
“What did your wolf say?” He asked curiously.
“That she’ll drag me back here every time I leave.” I grumble, while crossing my arms over my chest.
“I knew I liked her.” He said with a mischievous grin. I couldn’t help but smile, the man was cute even when he wasn’t trying to be.
“Listen, I’ve been alone for years and got use to it. I’m not sure if I’m ready for any of this.” I said truthfully.
“I get that. Have I forced you to do anything you weren’t comfortable with yet?” He asked and kept his eyes locked with mine.
“No.” I said barely above a whisper. He was right, even though he kept calling me mate, just to irritate me, he never forced anything on me.
“Exactly. We’ll move at your pace.” He said in a confident and reassuring tone. Before I could reply, he spoke again.
“Having said that, it won’t be long before you’re swooning over me like your wolf. I did lure her out after all.” He teased with a cocky grin.
“You did not lure her out, she missed me.” I argued.
“Keep telling yourself that.” He teased with a wink.
“I swear to the goddess, I will kick your a*s.” I threatened, before punching his shoulder.
“Ow” He whined, while rubbing the sore spot.
“Remember that the next time you’re about to say something stupid.” I warned.
“I should, but I probably won’t.” He replied with a chuckle.
“Should we go and tell Knox and Tatiana that you’re back, or do you want to stay and christen our bed?” He asked while wiggling his eyebrows.
“Our bed?” I questioned with an eyebrow raised.
“Ya, we ran out of spare rooms, so we’re going to have to share.” He replied with his classic grin and a shoulder shrug.
“Let’s go before I change my mind and disown my wolf.” I grumbled, while shaking my head and making my way out of the room.
“Can I hold your hand?” He asked sounding hopeful.
“Not a chance.” I said and swatted his hand when he tried to link his fingers with mine.
“Playing hard to get, I like it.” He joked and I shook my head, but internally smiled. I would never admit it to him, but I actually enjoy the dynamics between us.
We reached Knox’s office and Jo knocked.
“Come in.” Knox announced from the inside, before Jo opened the door.
We walked in and found Knox sitting behind his desk. He was alone in the room. He had a surprised look on his face when he saw me.
“Max, welcome back. When did you get here?” Knox asked curiously. Before I could reply, Jo answered.
“She missed me, do you blame her?” Jo joked and I smacked his chest, before glaring at him.
“Just kidding. Jeez…” he replied, while putting his hands up in mock surrender.
“My wolf somehow brought me back in the middle of the night.” I replied truthfully and Knox looked even more surprised at the mention of my wolf.
“Patrol didn’t stop you?” He asked with a curious frown.
‘I could of made it through his border patrol blindfolded.’ Fall bragged in my head.
“I guess not.” I said with a shrug and decided to keep my wolfs insults to myself.
“Hmmmm…We’ll have to figure out how they missed you. We can worry about the later. Tatiana is having breakfast in the dinner hall if you want to go and see her. I know she’ll be happy to see you.” Knox offered.
“Great, I’ll see you guys later.” I replied and made my way to the door, but stopped when Knox spoke again.
“Max, it’s nice to have you back.” He said and I could hear the sincerity in his tone.
“Thanks.” I said awkwardly, before leaving the office.
I still wasn’t sure how I felt about being in a pack again. I sure hope this doesn’t end bitting me in the a*s.
