Saving His Feral Mate -
Chapter 8: She’s met her match
Alpha Knox POV
I headed deep into the forest, with my Beta, Jag and a handful of warriors. I’m determined to replace my mate. Ideally, I can convince her to come back to my territory with me. I can’t wait to see her human side. I bet she has red hair, just like her wolf’s fur. Her wolf is beautiful, I know her human form will be just as stunning.
“What’s the plan, Knox.” Jag asked, as we crossed the border.
“Let’s start searching the area where we came across her last time.” I replied.
“Got it. What’s the plan if we replace her?” Jag asked curiously.
“I have no clue, let’s play it by year. I guess it depends if she tries to kill me again, or not.” I replied, while shrugging my shoulders. I’m still not sure how I feel about that first incident. I was pissed off that my mate tried to kill me, but at the same time, I was impressed that she was strong and didn’t shy away from fighting an Alpha.
We had been searching for hours, without any luck. I was starting to get frustrated. Goddess, what if I never replace her again? How is she able to resist the mate bond? I haven’t slept well since I first laid eyes on her and I’m always spaced out, not able to focus on my Alpha duties. People have started to notice.
We reached a clearing in the distance and I was immediately brought out of my thoughts. I could smell rogues and it instantly had me on high alert. I swear I could smell my mates scent lightly, but I couldn’t be certain, it was an old scent. Maybe she’s travel through this area before.
“Rogues” Jag growled, making sure the warriors were also aware of the scent.
I could see a small cabin in the distance, there was smoke coming out of the chimney and an older woman sitting on the front porch. I knew right away that she was a rogue, but she certainly didn’t have the classic rogue look.
I lifted my hand, silently instructing my warriors to stay still. I wanted to watch and see if anyone else would come and go from the cabin, before approaching.
After a half hour, an older gentleman came out carrying two mugs. He handed one to the woman, before taking a seat beside her. I really wasn’t getting any bad vibes from the two of them. I wonder why they were living as rogues?
I heard a twig snap and I instantly turned my head, glaring at my warrior that caused the noise.
“Sorry, Alpha.” He whispered sheepishly. I simply shook my head in frustration, before turning my attention back towards the old man and woman.
Of course, they were now standing and looking in our direction, with concern on their faces. They couldn’t see us though, we were well hidden amongst the trees.
“Scar, Is that you?” The old woman called out, with a concerned frown.
It was to late now, they could probably sense our presence, so I stepped out of the tree line with my men in tow.
I saw both the old man and woman, scowl at us as we walked towards them.
“What the hell do you want?” The old woman spat out angrily. I could see the hatred in her eyes. The old man, looked more concerned than angry, but I also saw a hint of hatred in his eyes. He stood in front of his partner protectively.
“We aren’t here to cause any problems. We just w…” I started to answer, with my hands up in surrender, but she quickly cut me off.
“Don’t want any problems, my a*s. Why the hell, would an Alpha be all the way out here?” She scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest. I watched, as the old man tried to calm her down, but she wasn’t having any of it. I’m getting a vibe, that they aren’t a fan of Alpha’s in general.
“We’re actually looking for a she-wolf.” Jag pipped up, coming to stand beside me. The rest of the warriors stayed on alert, a few feet behind us.
“Well, she’s not here, so you can leave now.” The woman said, with venom in her words.
“We haven’t even given you a description yet.” Jag countered, shaking his head in disbelief. I knew he was getting frustrated, we don’t usually tolerate this type of disrespect.
“Fine, what does this she-wolf look like.” The old woman asked, sounding bored.
“We only saw her in wolf form. She’s a decent size for a she-wolf, likely has Alpha b***d somewhere in her heritage and her fur is reddish brown.” Jag explained.
I didn’t miss the flash of concern in the old woman’s eyes, but she was quick to hide it with her cold features.
“We’ve never seen anyone matching that description.” She replied coldly. I knew she was lying, I could sense her nervousness, all of a sudden. She was hiding something and I was going to replace out what that was.
“Who’s Scar?” I asked, cutting off the useless argument my Beta was having with the woman. She clearly wasn’t going to willingly give us information. She looked taken aback for a moment at my question.
“What?” She asked angrily. I knew she had heard me, but she was stalling, trying to come up with a believable reply.
“Who’s Scar? When you first sensed our presence, you called out to someone by the name of Scar. Who is that?” I asked curiously and watched her reaction closely. She was practically sweating at this point and it took her a long time to come up with a reply. She was also fidgeting with her hands.
“Mmmm… It’s a fox that likes to hangout around here. We feed it every now and then, so it always comes back.” She replied, but it was a clear lie. She was actually a terrible liar and I almost wanted to laugh and call her out, but decided against it. I had a better idea. So I stayed quiet and nodded, with a slight smile on my face.
“Thanks for you time, Ma’am. I’m sorry we bothered you guys, have a wonderful day.” I said, while bowing my head.
‘She’s lying, we can’t leave. I know she knows something.’ My Beta mind-linked me.
‘I know. Just go with it.’ I replied. I glanced over and saw that he had a confused look on his face, but he didn’t argue.
The old women and man didn’t say anything further and only watch us, as we walked back the way we came.
“Now what?” Jag asked curiously, when we were out of sight.
“We wait.” I replied, with a slight grin on my face. I had a feeling that I would be seeing my mate again, very soon.
“You think your mate’s going to come here?” He asked, with a surprised look.
“I do. I think that’s who the old woman thought we were, initially. She’s trying to protect my mate from me.” I growled out the last bit, not liking the fact that someone was questioning my intentions with my own mate. I mean, it’s not like I told her she was my mate, but still.
I could of easily used my Alpha command on them, but I’m not sure I want to burn those bridges just yet. Maybe they will eventually warmup to me and even help me, when it comes to my mate.
It was close to dinner time and we had been hiding in the tree line out of sight, all afternoon.
The old couple had gone back to their regular routine and definitely couldn’t sense our presence anymore. We made sure to stay far enough away, that even if a twig snapped, we would be out of ear shot. I was putting all my eggs in one basket, but I still had a good feeling in my gut.
“Alpha, I saw movement in the bushes directly across from us. On the other side of the cabin.” One of the warriors whispered.
I quickly turned my attention to where he thought he saw something and watched carefully.
Sure enough, a few minutes past and my mate cautiously stepped out of the tree line. She was looking all around and sniffing the air. I knew she could scent us, from when we first approached the cabin. I watched her curiously, as she slowly made her way towards the front. She was holding something in her mouth, an animal of some sort. I wonder what she’s doing?
“Oh, thank the moon goddess you’re ok!” I heard the old woman’s voice, as she walked out the front door of the cabin and headed towards my mate. s**t, I hope she doesn’t runaway as soon as she hears that I was here.
“An Alpha and his men were here today, they were looking for a she-wolf and the description sounded a lot like yours, Scar.” The woman said, with concern in her tone. My mate dropped what she was holding in her mouth, it looked to be a couple of dead rabbits, before growling at her words.
“Are you in trouble?” The old woman asked softly and I got the feel the old women had a soft spot for my mate. I wonder how they know each other.
My mate stayed in her wolf form and obviously didn’t respond to the question, but she was looking around cautiously.
“Don’t worry, I didn’t tell them anything. I think they beliv…” The old woman started, but I was done hiding. It was time to speak with my mate.
I stepped out from behind the trees, making my present known, walking towards the old woman and my mate. The woman had a shocked look on her face and my mate crouched low to the ground and growled viciously at me.
Well, that wasn’t exactly the warm welcome I wanted from my mate, but I guess we will work on that.
‘Alpha, maybe I should go first, she looks pissed off.’ Jag said nervously, through the mind-link.
‘She’s my mate, she won’t hurt me.’ I replied, trying to sound confident, but really, I was starting to doubt my own words.
“You’ve been a hard one to track down, mate.” I said, as got within 20 feet. The old woman gasped and covered her mouth with her hand, when I used the word, mate.
My mate growled louder, warning me not to get any closer. I took her warning seriously and stopped in my tracks. I noticed the old man had come out onto the porch and was watching the interaction carefully. My men were positioned in way, that they could intervene easily if things got out of hand.
“I just want to talk, can you PLEASE shift.” I said, with my hands up in front of me, trying to show her that I wasn’t a threat. I emphasized the word please, since the last time I ordered her to shift, she attacked me. I was kind hoping to avoid, another b***d bath.
She didn’t shift, only remained in the same defence position, ready to attack if I try anything.
“You’re wasting your time, Alpha.” The old woman said, sounding disgusted with the word Alpha. I wonder what her problem is?
“What do you mean?” I asked, with a frown.
“In the two years I’ve know Scar, I’ve never seen her human side.” The woman explained, but the hatred never left her tone.
My mouth fell open, as I processed her words. What the hell was she saying? Can my mate not shift into her human form?
“She’s feral.” I said in a low voice, more to myself but I knew everyone heard me.
“That’s right Alpha, so why don’t you cut your ties now and be on your way.” The woman said, motioning with her hands for us to leave.
“No! I don’t accept that.” I shouted, now I was getting angry. This is not how I imagined it would be like, when I found my mate and I’m not ready to accept it. The old woman flinched at my outburst but my mate stood her ground, looking even more vicious, if that was at all possible.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to shout. But I’m not leaving, not without my mate. At least let me talk to her, surely she can hear me, even if she can’t respond.” I said, in a determined voice.
The old woman looked at my mate questionable, but my mate never took her eyes off me. I shivered at the hate that I saw within them. Goddess, I don’t know what happened to her in the past, but I’m going to have my work cut out for me. She still looks like she could kill me, without even batting an eyelash, It’s a bit unnerving.
‘I brought a silver dart, we could always tranquilize her. It would be a lot safer and comfortable to do this on our terms.’ Jag suggested and I glared at him. I wasn’t even going to answer that. I wasn’t about to inflict pain on my own mate. I knew he was only suggesting it, because he was feeling uncomfortable. I have to admit, I was also feeling uncomfortable, but it doesn’t matter, that suggestion was out of the question.
“I’m not leaving here, not until she lets me talk to her.” I added stubbornly, while crossing my arms over my chest.
I swear, if a wolf could huff in frustration, that’s exactly what my mate just did. My lips twisted upwards ever so slightly, knowing that I was winning this standoff. She’s clearly stubborn, but what she hasn’t realized, is that she’s met her match.
