Selling Myself To The Alpha -
Chapter 168
Adele
POV
"You need to wake up," Luther throws his arm around my waist and pulls me closer. "Or we're going to be late."
"It's just setting a building on fire," my voice is thick with sleep. "I don't need to be there."
"It's going to be spectacular," he insists.
"I don't give two shits if they burn it down or let it rot," I grunt.
"You fought that tyrant, and won," he kisses me on my shoulder. "You should go so the world can see whom to thank." "Exactly," I turn on my back to face him. "I fought and won, I deserve to sleep in. The world can thank Axel and Liana." "You're as much an alpha as Axel," Luther reasons softly.
"This is not about my ego or who gets the credit, Luther," I sigh. "It's about me being exhausted to the bone. Since I set foot on Moonstone, it has been scheming and fighting. My body is demanding that I slow down and relax." "Well," he grins mischievously. "If your body says so, who am I to argue?"
"After all," he traces a finger from my shoulder to my breasts. "I do adore your body."
"No," I take his hand away adamantly. "I meant it when I said I'm tired."
"Are you okay?" He frowns. "You're always in the mood."
"Please," I look at him pleadingly. "Can I just sleep?"
He looks at me intensely for a moment.
"Okay," he leans over and gently kisses me before he gets up and walks to the bathroom.
Liana POV
The air is buzzing with anticipation and excitement. People from all over are coming to see Dark Moon burn. Fire trucks are everywhere and ready to act if any fires get out of control. Axel and I walk hand in hand to the servant quarters. It smells exactly as I remember it, and my stomach dives.
"I'm not going in there" I whisper to Axel, and he nods in understanding. Getting sick in front of Philip will not bother me, but the rest of the spectators do not need to see it. "Go fetch him," Axel orders David and his team.
"Adele and Luther are late," I say as we patiently wait for Philip. "I thought they would be here by now."
"They're not coming," Axel replies. "She sent a cryptic message about being tired and not feeling well. Could be the aftermath of yesterday's flight. She didn't take it so well. "Oh, really," I look at him curiously.
"Just a little nausea," he shrugs.
"Yeah, right," I chuckle, and Axel looks at me perplexed
"Oh, come on," I roll my eyes. "I can't be the only one thinking it."
"What are you getting at?" He frowns.
"How many wolves do you know need twenty-four hours to recover from motion sickness?" I ask sweetly. "And combine that with tiredness."
"I don't know," he shrugs. "I'm not a doctor. And I never took she-wolves on a joyride with the company's plane. I have no comparisons."
"Okay," I nod. "Then let me phrase it this way. Adele has been part of our lives for more than three years now. How often has she been tired or sick?"
"Never, I guess," he says thoughtfully.
"Exactly," I smile brightly. "I think she's pregnant."
"Really?" Axel's eyes widen. "I would've figured they'd tell us. Especially Luther."
"I don't think she knows," I laugh heartily. "There are too many things on her mind than to keep track of her period and symptoms."
Axel is still gaping for words when David drags Philip towards us.
"You look terrible," I grin when I look at him all dirty and disgusting. He definitely lost muscle mass due to a lack of decent food and the smell! Dear goddess, his scent finally matches his personality. "Go fvck yourself," he sneers at me.
"No, thanks," I smile, look at Axel and rub my bulging baby bump. "I have a formidable husband to do that."
The look on Axel's face tells me he replaces the situation less amusing, and I know the only reason he is not striking Philip into the ground, is because I shut him down with sarcasm. In other circumstances, I would have kept my mouth and let Axel do it, but the people came for a fire, not a fight.
"But enough about my blessings," my voice cuts through the tension. "Let's talk about you and everything you've missed while we walk to your soon-to-be-burned-down home."
"The good news is, all of your pack members have been reallocated to the pack of their choice," I continue as we start walking. "And we captured all of The Enforcers and their accomplices."
Philip does not utter a word or sound as we walk. People sneer and mock him the entire time and I am not sure if he is listening to me or them. But the second we face the house, the people quiet down
"Everything you build" Axel looks at him. "Everything you accomplish and acquired over the years, will be destroyed today. Your bloodline ends with you."
Axel takes a couple of steps forward and strikes a match.
"Burn, b!tch," he mutters and drops it. Flames immediately ignite when it hits the gasoline, and a line of fire runs towards the house. Within seconds, the flames engulf the house. A pained cry escapes from Philip's lips as he falls to his knees and stares at the fire. For a moment, I appreciate the beauty of the feisty flames until the heat starts spreading towards us.
"We need to get back," Axel whispers to me and for the first time I notice that the surrounding buildings are also on fire.
Silently, I take his hand and walk to the nearest fire truck.
Firefighters are guiding the people to safety while David and his team drag Philip away. He is now openly crying, and his eyes are fixated on his burning home.
"I don't want our home to burn down," Axel says softly. "But I wouldn't cry about it."
"You have a family," I reason and reach for Axel's hand. "We can start over and rebuild. There's a reason for the saying: home is where the heart is. Philip doesn't have a heart for everybody other than himself. This was his home, his sanctuary. The place where he lived and ruled as a king, and we just took it from him."
I look at Philip who is wailing as the flames surge through the open windows. I watch as his legs go weak and falls to his knees. I listen to the animalistic weeping sounds which are coming from him.
"We broke his spirit," I say softly. "It doesn't matter if we kill him or how we do it. His will is broken, and he doesn't care anymore. He lost everything."
"You were right," I look at Axel. "There is mercy in death."
