Aria’s POV

I was running in a deep dark forest, devoid of anything that sounded like a living creature in the thick woods.

A nightmare.

This was another nightmare.

I could hear my heart beating rapidly against my chest as I strained to replace my way out of the dark.

Walking even deeper, I tried to look for a way out and that was when I heard it.

A growl that sounded very far from human.

My heart skipping, I covered my mouth with my hand and fought the urge to scream as the creature slowly approached the tree where I was hiding and my body shook in terror.

Should I run?

Would I be able to escape or outrun it, whatever it was?

The growl grew even closer and I knew that I could either continue to wait for the creature to finally replace me or take to my heels now.

I chose the latter and started to run as fast as my legs could carry me, tears streaming down my face as I struggled to not look back at the creature as it gave a hot pursuit.

I could see a little light ahead and it made me run even faster. Perhaps help was where the light was.

Perhaps I could…

I tripped over a branch, falling to the ground on my face.

Coughing hard when I managed to sit up, I froze when I heard the growl very close to me and I started to crawl even though I knew it was hopeless.

“Please.” I whimpered, screaming at the top of my lungs.

“Help me! Somebody? Anybody.” I cried, crawling even faster when I realized that I tried to stand up and failed.

The growl got even closer and when I finally turned around, I screamed, opening my eyes to see Sophia peering over me, her eyes wide with shock. .

Sitting up, I reached for my neck and looked down to see that I was sweating.

So it had been a nightmare then, truly.

“Are you okay?” Sophia asked and I was about to reply when I realized that I was already forgetting what the nightmare had been about.

Rushing to get my sketch pad, I began to draw quickly, my strokes uncoordinated but after ten minutes, I was done.

It was a drawing of the monster in my dream.

In all of my other nightmares, I rarely ever saw anyone or anything.

It was just always me in a vast emptiness. Or a dark forest.

Sometimes, it was nightmares of my father finally beating me to death but the dark forest nightmare was always the same. I was always running from something. Or someone.

But this time, what chased me had finally appeared before my eyes.

“Whoa.” I looked up and saw Sophia staring at my work and I quickly closed it, holding the pad to my chest.

“You can draw very well.” She added and I nodded.

“Thank you very much. But what are you doing here?”

“It’s almost noon. I came to wake you because your schedule is almost about to start.”

My eyes widened and when I looked at the clock, I panicked because she was right. I had overslept.

But I had also received permission from Raphael to have half days of work until I fully recovered, I remembered with a smile.

“Okay then. I’ll come back to see you before dinner. You should get some rest. How are the bruises?”

I winced as I remembered how my father had kicked me until he had fractured my ribs.

Waving at her with a smile, I waited till she closed the door and I opened my sketch pad to look at what I had sketched out in a frenzy.

Fur black as the night without moonlight, I had drawn the ears of the creature pulled forward and fangs tucked up. Four black paws stood firm to the earth’s soil and when the beast had risen to its full height on all fours, snarling, I could vividly remembering it’s eyes filled with mindless rage.

Eyes that were the colour of b***d.

Was that Roma?

No, I thought, shaking my head immediately. I had yet to see Roma in his wolf form and for all I knew, the red eyes of the beast could be my mind playing tricks on me.

Sighing, I turned the pages back and settled on one of my most recent drawings. Of Roma. His face in a perpetual frown, thick brows that were perfectly aligned and move in synchrony when he raised them and a gaze that promised nothing but retribution and vengeance.

No, the beast in my nightmares and Roma were not the same. Could they?

Roma’s POV

The last thing I expected when Raphael called me was to replace my half brother waiting for me at the entrance to the woods.

Carlos sniffed the air and raised an eyebrow at me.

“I’m sure the message said that what your lackey wanted to show us was urgent. Or were you already lounging around in the bath and could not be bothered to stand up, Alpha?”

My gaze flicked to his coldly as a wicked smile stretched my lips. “Do you want to die tonight, brother?”

As always, the thought of bloodshed and c*****e awakened my beast beneath me and it prowled dangerously within me, tearing at my skin and determined to spring out already of me.

Carlos stumbled back and avoided eye contact with me, probably sensing the demon trying to break out. “N- No. Of course not, alpha.”

Besides the fact that we shared the same father and the man’s midnight hair, Carlos and I might as well have been oil and water.

He didn’t hide his less than enthusiastic opinion that he did not think he should answer to me.

Unfortunately, I didn’t give a s**t what he thought and more than anyone, he knew what happened to those who crossed the line with me.

They ended up dead. With all of their body parts intact if they were lucky. So, Carlos toed the line dangerously and because he was my brother, I overlooked it.

One of those times was now because even though he sounded like a complete t**t, he was right to ask why I had taken an extra ten minutes to come out after Raphael’s call.

I didn’t want anyone, especially Carlos to smell Salem on me even though it was not exactly a secret that we f****d sometimes. It would be another flaw to him, another reason why he thought I was not fit to be Alpha.

I walked over to him and settled my hand on his shoulder. He flinched and trembled slightly but to his credit, he held my gaze when I took his chin in my tight grasp and made him look into my eyes.

“Careful, brother. You forget yourself sometimes.” I leaned in to whisper, loving the scent of fear permeating from his pores. “You wouldn’t want to get caught up in an unfortunate accident like father now, would you?”

His face hardened in rage at the thought of our father who I murdered in a fit of cold rage. “No.” He said with a hardened gaze. “Of course not.”

“Good boy.” I grinned and patted his shoulder twice, releasing him from my hold.

He gritted his teeth and when I raised an eyebrow, waiting to see if he would say anything else, he grunted and took off running into the woods.

Following his lead, I ran at a steady pace until we arrived at the clearing in the woods where I saw Raphael and two other sentries in a heated conversation.

One of the sentries saw me first and bowed.

“Alpha.”

Nodding, I walked towards Raphael, instantly worried when I saw the frown on his face. Unlike Carlos who felt like a dark cloud over my head, Raphael was one of the only reasons why I still woke up in the morning and truly believed that I was more than a cursed beast.

“Rafa, tell me. What is it?”

Pointing to some broken gadgets gathered together, he looked at me with a grim expression.

“It’s the humans. We have found some of their equipment on our lands. It seems they wished to track us. And I fear that this may just be the beginning.”
