Roma’s POV

“You need to at least look happy to see your guests. Because they are your guests.” Raphael said as we both stood by the window of my office and watched the cars that drove in.

“You’re the one that labelled me as antisocial and mostly prone to violence. Where is this surprise and expectation to be a good host coming from, dear Beta?” I answered, my eyes stuck on the two cars that had arrived.

We were expecting a total of twenty representatives from all of the five packs that had chosen this as the next venue for the quarterly summit.

If I had my way, I would never host anything here until I died and the next Alpha, who would definitely not come from me since I had no plans to have children born with the genes of a Demon, decided to be benevolent enough to open his doors to people that were mostly coming here to see just how much the pack had grown since my father’s untimely demise and how strong I was as an Alpha.

“You should go downstairs and greet them.” I told Raphael and he smirked, raising his eyebrows.

“Is that a request to your Beta or an order?” He asked with a grin.

“It’s a threat.” I answered simply with a smile that was filled with fang and he chuckled, tapping my shoulder before he headed out of the office.

He was at the door when he turned around and looked at me.

“You can’t hide away up here forever, dearest Alpha.” He said and I nodded.

Aria was sure making sure she could hide from me for as long as possible.

The anxiety of knowing that she was in this mansion and being unable to go to her just because I had promised Scian to give her space until she was ready to talk to me was eating at me.

I wanted to know what she thought of who I was now that she had seen the monster that I had been desperate to keep hidden from her in all its glory.

I didn’t know why it made me feel ashamed that she might not want me any more now that she knew when I was supposed to be jubilating if it turned out that she didn’t want anything to do with me.

The thought of her rejecting me left a bitter taste in my mouth if I was being very honest with myself and it made me wonder if this had all been a part of the goddess’ twisted plan to punish me. Because this was punishment. This was torture.

There was a knock on the door and when the person entered, I schooled by features into one of calm even when my entire body was screaming at me to hold her against the wall and cut a hole through her neck.

Salem looked like she had not been sleeping well in days and her usual confidence was nowhere to be found as she closed the door behind her slowly as if it would bite her if she did anything else.

Frowning, I waited to see what she wanted and she bowed before she spoke.

“I know that I don’t have any right to ask for your approval personally but I want to thank you for approving my request to leave the pack for my distant relative’s pack, even though I know that what I did deserves the highest form of punishment. I let my jealousy cloud my judgment and nearly sent an innocent girl to her death.”

I didn’t react, walking to stand behind my desk as I raised my brows in question.

“Have you approached the person you offended to render this apology? Because it is not me who deserves to hear this. And the two of us know that.” I answered and her eyes widened as she shuffled from one foot to another.

I would have felt bad for how depressed she looked if I didn’t remember how horrified Aria had looked before she fainted.

How scared and alone she must have felt going into that deadly forest.

How she must have thought that she was going to die as food for feral wolves who had lost all touch with humanity.

And how naive she was that Salem had bullied her into going to such a place when she had no clue how to leave the forest.

I would have felt bad if she wasn’t the reason why my mate was now avoiding me like a plague.

“I don’t think she would want to see me.” Salem answered, and I glimpsed the cocky woman that she used to be from that statement.

“You are not leaving the pack because you tried to kill Aria, are you?” I asked and when her eyes widened, I realized that I was spot on with my analysis.

No, Salem was not the kind of woman who would feel bad for hurting a human. She deemed them beneath her, like ants that were meant to stay under her feet.

“Answer me” I said calmly but she saw the look I had given her and that it didn’t give her any room to not answer.

“I’m leaving because of you. You are the reason why I sent that girl into the forest in the first place. I had not thought about killing her or leaving her to the feral wolves. It was not until we entered the forest that I chose to leave her. I know that I am at fault for falling in love with you despite all of your warnings to keep it casual and yes, I allowed my jealousy for the affection that you showed her when you could hardly even smile at me affect my reasoning. And I am leaving the pack because I know that I’m capable of anything when it comes to you. And it won’t mean a thing.”

By the time she was done, her eyes watered with tears and I wondered if I might have unknowingly played a part in things becoming like this.

Salem was one of my best female wolves and now she was a threat to my mate.

I looked at her, unsure of what to say and she smiled.

“I’ve never seen you act the way you did when you found out that she was missing. Not once. Not since Selene.”

The mention of my first mate’s name at any other time would have made me feel like there was an arrow to my chest but instead there was only a dull ache. I had made my peace with her death even though it had taken years.

Now all I could see was the human girl with light brown eyes and freckles that covered her nose and cheeks with an innocent smile that made my heart thump faster everytime she looked at me.

Salem bowed

“I hope that the next time I see you, it is on good terms”

She was at the door when she stopped and turned around to look at me.

“I don’t know what she is to you, Roma. But one thing is certain. She is human. And she will not survive who you are.”
