HUDSON

We arrived back at the packhouse, and everyone was waiting for us on the top step.

As we stop, Rex climbs out and walks around to open the door for me as I climb out with my sleeping mate in my arms and carry her through the packhouse.

As we get to the top steps, “I made a room up on your floor for her, as mum told me too,” says Daisy, looking towards Brooke.

I smiled. “Thank you, show me which one.”

Daisy looks away from Brooke and takes the lead, and I follow her.

We get to my floor, and Daisy points to the door that she has set Brooke up in, and I can’t help but smile. She picked the room that joined my room.

Daisy opens the door, and I walk in. Daisy moves to the bed and pulls the blankets back as I place her down on the bed. I moved the blankets back into place over her, but the blanket she was still wrapped in was thin and still around her. It looked old, I was about to take it off her, but someone spoke quietly. “Don’t take it off her,” says Austin, standing by the door. “That was the last thing I gave her before the…….” but he couldn’t finish his sentence as tears escaped. We all know how he feels.

I leave the blanket over her, looking back at my mate.

It was so quiet. I could feel someone move closer to me.

I looked to see Daisy nodding toward the door.

I knew I couldn’t stay as she might freak out if she found me there.

I walk through the door, and Daisy follows me.

“I bought some clothes for her too,” says Daisy in a whisper as she shuts the door behind us.

“Thank you,” I said. I couldn’t help but look towards the closed door.

“I think Asher should stay with her but on the floor. She might feel safe if she sees that he’s there with her and she’s not on her own,” blurts Daisy.

I looked back at her, stunned. But Asher was happy and jumping around in my head; he liked the idea.

I smiled and nodded. I walked backwards and shifted to Asher.

Asher shakes out his fur and looks between Austin and Daisy, grinning.

Daisy opens the door and lets us in. We stepped inside, and Daisy closed the door behind us.

We looked at our sleeping mate and stood by the door. We slide down till our body lands on the hard surface, and we rest our head on our paws.

It wasn’t long till sleep took over us.

But after a few hours, I hear something, and we open our eyes.

We looked up to see a frightened mate looking at us.

Her eyes are wide as she looks around the room, but her eyes land on us again.

“Asher, don’t move,” I said to him; he kept looking at our mate.

Brooke slowly moves, still watching us, and we keep our eyes on each other.

“Where am I?” She mouths. No sound coming from her.

Asher c***s his head to the side.

She stands up and walks to the window. She looks outside, realizing that she is back at the pack lands. She tenses.

Asher stands up and moves slowly, moving closer to her.

She doesn’t realize that we are right behind her. We went up just over her shoulder, but our head was way above hers. She stiffens as she stares at our reflection in the window, turning around slowly and looking up at us.

I can feel her fear; she’s scared.

“Don’t move,” I said to Asher, looking through his eyes.

He listens to me. He knows and senses his mate is scared.

She steps to the side a bit but hits our paw.

Asher stared at her, and he didn’t flinch at the movement.

She stiffens again, still watching us. “Sorry,” she mouths.

She steps around us and goes back to bed, her eyes never leaving us, making sure we never move or checking to see what we do next.

Asher turns and watches her.

She climbs back into bed and pulls the covers over her, her eyes never leaving us, watching us.

Asher moves closer to the bed, lowers his head, and places it on the mattress where her hand is. He sniffs her hand and looks at her. Her eyes went wide, looking back at us. She moves her hand in the cast, but Asher nudges it with his nose. She leaves it on his nose.

Brooke looks at us and never moves her hand; she leaves it there.

Brooke moves down the bed and places her head on the pillow. She turns toward us and slowly drifts back off to sleep.

Once she was back asleep, “Mate is so cute,” says Asher; I chuckle in his head.

“Yeah, she is, you big softie,” I said.

Asher frowns, but his eyes never leave Brooke, who was back silently snoring.

Asher lies back down; we are so tall and big that we can maneuver ourselves to get comfy. He stayed like that, with her hand on his nose all night. Her scent was intoxicating, but it calmed us down.

We close our eyes and fall back to sleep.

It was the best night’s sleep we have had in ages.

However, it doesn’t take long to feel the sun sweeping through the curtains. It blares down on Asher’s back, but he doesn’t move.

Asher opens his eyes and stares at our mate, not moving.

Suddenly, Brooke slowly opens her eyes; her eyes adjust to the light but go wide at the sight of us. She quickly moves her hand to her chest, resulting in her whimpering in pain.

Asher whines when he sees her in pain; he doesn’t like seeing her in pain.

Suddenly, the door opens, and my mother stands in the doorway.

She stares at me and then back at Brooke, but a smile goes on her face. “Ah, you’re awake; I see the big softie stayed with you.”

Asher glares back at her, earning a chuckle from my mother and me.

Brooke looks between the both of us, looking slightly confused.

“How did I get here?” She mouths.

My mother looks at her and smiles. “Hudson found you and this big softie here; he carried you back. Hudson will be…..huh…. here soon,” she says. “Would you like some food?”

She looks back at her.

She seemed to be thinking about what to say.

Asher lets out a bark towards my mother to get her attention, “Give her the notebook to write in,” I say through mind link, remembering that she had written in it before.

The bark scared Brooke as she looked at Asher, but he looked back at her and lowered his head to her. She stared back at him.

My mother smiles and places her hand into her back pocket to retrieve a notebook. Brooke looks back between the book and my mother, who walks over to her and hands it over. My mother smiles at her as Brooke takes the notebook.

She opens it up and starts to write. “Yes, I want some food, but can I eat it here, please,” she writes.

My mother nodded. “Yeah, that will be fine. I will let the wolf out first,” but Brooke shakes her head and writes back in the book, “No, he is ok here.”

My mother looks taken back at the written statement but smiles.

“Ok, Asher can stay,” she says, but Brooke gives her a weird look. My mother shakes her head. “Where are my manners? The wolf’s name is Asher; he’s Hudson’s wolf,” she says.

Brooke looks back at us and smiles, mouthing, “Nice to meet you, Asher.”

Asher is happy; he wags his tail at her and licks her hand.

She shakes her shoulders as if she giggles without a sound, and so does my mother. “I think you made him happy, Brooke,” she says.

“You know, you made everyone worry yesterday when you ran off,” she says. Brooke looks worriedly back at my mother, but my mother shakes her head. She looks at Brooke. “I’m not angry, and I won’t hurt you. I promise that no one will Brooke, not here,” she says.

Brooke looks back but gives her a small smile.

My mother smiles, “Once you have had some food, you can have a shower and change into some fresh clothes; they are over there in the wardrobe,” she says, pointing to the wardrobe.

Brooke looks at where she is pointing and nods.

My mother turns around to leave, but she looks over her shoulder at her before she does. “Brooke, you need to talk to your dad. There are some things you need to know. He’s not a bad man, I promise. Talk to him when you are ready; he’s hurting too,” she says.

Brooke looks at her hands and grabs the book. She writes in the book once again. She held it up for my mother to look at, and my mother had to walk back over to the bed to read. My mother reads it aloud, “I will, but only when I’m ready.” My mother nods but doesn’t say anything. She was about to leave, but Brooke held her finger up and mouthed, “Wait.” “Thank you, Sophia,” she wrote. “I will try, but I replace it hard when it comes to people as Aubrey never let me be around other people or anyone.”

My mother’s face turned sad. “You won’t be going back to her. I promise you that, Brooke. I will kill her if she ever comes near the ground or you. Also, she has to go through your father and Hudson.”

She looks taken back, but my mother leaves us.

Brooke looks confused, and she looks back at us.

She leans back on the bed and watches us.

Asher wants to get closer to her, but he doesn’t want to scare her again.

Brooke lifts her good hand, slowly moving it towards us.

Asher stared at her and was about to move closer, but I stopped him.

“She’s being brave; let her make the first move,” I said to Asher, as I could feel his excitement.
