BROOKE

I woke up in darkness.

I sat up on the bed; the packhouse was so quiet. Everyone must be asleep.

Willow stirs in my head but opens her eyes, and she comes closer.

“Everyone’s asleep,” she said. “We should go.”

I looked around; I changed my clothes into something more suitable and comfortable. I grabbed the bag and placed it on my shoulder.

“I’ve masked our scent; no one will know we have gone,” she said.

We headed downstairs, and I looked around. No one was about, and I continued to walk toward the front door, but I spotted some money on the side of the front door, as I came closer. I feel bad, but I have nothing to my name. I grabbed it, placing it in my pocket. It’s not much, but hopefully, it can get me out of here, maybe on a bus somewhere.

I turned and opened the front door to the packhouse; I closed it quietly behind me.

I looked around only to be in front of Alpha Josh, who was standing at the bottom of the steps to the packhouse. I must have startled him, as he slightly jumped when he looked at me.

He smiled when he realized it was me in front of him, but then he looked at me more closely. He must have realized that I was leaving.

“Where are you going, Brooke?” he asks me quietly.

“Away,” I mouthed.

He looked at me with a smirk. “Hudson doesn’t know, doesn’t he?”

I shook my head.

He looked at me as his expression changed into something else. “I think you should go; you must figure stuff out for yourself. Not what everyone expects you, especially regarding matters of the heart,” he says softly.

Alpha Josh stared at me for a few moments, but he put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a wad of cash.

He looked at me and held it up to me. “Here, you can’t go far without any money,” he said.

I looked at him, and I scrunched my eyebrows together. “Why are you helping me?” I mouthed at him.

He smiled. “You have been through a lot. Hudson wants to be mated to that human, then let him, but I won’t let you stay because of the mate bond. I think mates are overrated myself, but you can choose to be happy,” he said as he walked up the steps towards me.

He stopped by me. I kept my eyes on him, and Willow was close by too. “You need to be careful,” he said, placing a card in my hand. “Here’s my card with my number, I’m well known around most places, have someone to ring me, and I will help you in any way I can,” he said.

“Brooke, I won’t tell Hudson you left, but I would be quick about leaving before someone sees you,” he said, walking through the door. Alpha Josh turned around and walked back towards the front door but stopped. I couldn’t help but keep my eyes on him as he walked away.

I stared at the door for a few moments but knew I had to leave. I turned around and carried on down the steps. I glanced at the wad of cash and card in my hands that he gave me and placed them both in my hoodie pocket.

I needed to be free from all this.

I had never been free before. I was constantly abused by the people I thought were my family and men. I know I shouldn’t leave my father again, but I did leave a note in the notebook saying why I had to go this time. I had to tell him. I couldn’t leave without him knowing how I felt and that I would miss him.

I ran through the forest and found a dirt road in the clearing; the walk didn’t take long. It was led to the road, and I believed I had met Alpha Josh around here; as I got closer to the top, a car was waiting on the other side of the road.

Fear radiated through me as the window went down; my heart hammered in my chest, but Daisy’s face came into view.

My heart beat faster, but she was smiling at me.

“I knew you were leaving. I saw the bag in the wardrobe,” she said.

I looked back at her, stunned, but she smiled. “I read the note you left for your dad,” she said. “I’m coming with you, Brooke; you will not be alone this time.”

I looked back at her, confused. “Why,” I mouthed.

She shook her head. “You’re my friend, and I’m not leaving you again. My mother knows we are going; she won’t tell anyone that we are gone till they realize we are missing, hopefully in the morning, so you had best get in this car,” she says as she turns to face the windscreen.

I stared at her for a few more minutes but walked around the front of the car and climbed into the passenger side.

As I placed my seat belt on, I couldn’t help but look back at her. “What about Rex?” I mouthed to her as she stared at me as I got into the seat.

She looked sad at the mention of her mate, but she recovered. “I haven’t rejected him, but I can’t forgive him for the lies he has told. I haven’t got a clue how to think or what I feel,” she said. “What about Hudson?” she said as she looked at me.

I looked back at her with a frown. “No mate,” I mouthed.

No words are said about our mates as she starts the car and drives away.

But suddenly, “Hudson is a fool Brooke, he will suffer now for what he has done, and I have to say he deserves it,” she says.

I didn’t say anything as we drove for a little while, but I could feel her eyes on me, so I turned to look at her. “Where are we going?” she asked.

I looked at her and shrugged. I didn’t get that far. I didn’t know where I was going.

I pointed in the north direction, and she looked confused but soon realized what I was thinking. “You want to go on a plane,” she asked, shocked.

I nodded. “I have never been one,” I mouthed.

I was getting frustrated with how I was trying to communicate with people. I needed to figure out how to communicate better; maybe I could learn to sign.

“That’s a good idea,” said Willow with a giggle. “We are going on a girlie trip.”

I smiled.

Daisy was hurting, and so was I. We both needed to get away and start fresh.

It will take, however long it takes, for us to heal, but we also need to be safe.

Daisy kept driving, but she was smiling. “I know someone who can help us; he is an alpha in the amazing pack,” she said. “I will call him on our way to the airport as I know he is here on business in another pack. I’m sure he won’t mind us crashing his plane ride home,” she said with a laugh.

I chuckled but stared out of the window.

Daisy puts on the radio, and we listen to songs.

My mind wonders, but I’m happy to know I’m not alone. I have Daisy and Willow, something I never had before.
