Chapter 194 I Know He'll Find Aiden
Chapter 194 I Know He'll Find Aiden
Amanda suddenly calmed down, for she thought that Howard had most probably taken the child away.
"When will you have an answer?"
The man fell silent for a few seconds, then said, "Tomorrow morning, probably."
Tonight, he had to figure out if the child was truly taken away by Howard.
I'll give him time. Amanda felt that one night was acceptable. She could stop worrying if Aiden was with Howard.
"I'm getting tired, so I'll go back first. I await your news."
Amanda got up and prepared to leave. Her sudden calmness caught the man by surprise.
"I'll send you back."
Amanda said, "It's okay. Let your bodyguard send me home, and you can keep looking for Aiden. I'll wait for your updates at home. After all, I can't help with anything here; I'd just get in the way."
She didn't want to disturb Elias' search for the child.
It was obvious that Elias didn't want her to know that Howard had taken the child away, for he wanted to maintain Howard's reputation. She decided that she would just play along and pretend she had no idea. She would be fine with it as long as Aiden was back. She didn't care how it was done; she just wanted a good ending.
"I'll get Yacob to send you back."
Elias didn't say more. If Amanda wasn't around, he would have had more time to negotiate with Howard.
Amanda smiled tiredly and nodded, then turned around and walked out of the monitoring room.
As the man gazed at her lonely figure, he felt his heart ache.
...
In the car, Amanda supported her chin as she stared at the night scene outside the window. Her gaze was vacant.
Yacob, who was driving, glanced in the rearview mirror. When he saw Amanda behaving like that, he said, "Don't worry, Miss Bailey, we'll replace Aiden." Yacob just wanted to comfort her.
Amanda, however, smiled weakly. "I know he'll replace Aiden. I even know that he'll replace Aiden by tomorrow morning. It's just a matter of willingness." "What do you mean by that?"
Why did she talk as if Elias knew who had taken the child away? Could it be that Elias wasn't looking for the child on purpose?
Yacob felt that Amanda was referring to something implicitly.
Amanda, however, just smiled and shook her head. "It's nothing. Can you go faster, please? I'm a little tired, so I want to go back and rest for a bit."
She just wanted to go home and sleep, for she wouldn't have to keep worrying once she went to sleep. Maybe when she woke up the next morning and opened her eyes, she would see Aiden standing next to the bed, holding a milk bottle as he drank his milk.
Yacob felt that something was off about Amanda.
After sending Amanda home, he dialed Elias' number. The call was quickly answered.
"Did you send her back?"
"Yes, but Mr. Winters, I feel as if Miss Bailey is behaving weirdly. Don't you think so too? She looks very relaxed, as if she isn't worried or anxious anymore."
The man was quiet for a few seconds, then said, "Got it. Come back here. There's something else I want you to do."
Ding-
The doorbell rang. When Selina saw that Amanda was back, she hastily opened the door. However, she was greeted with the sight of Amanda walking dejectedly inside.
"Amanda, where's Aiden? Why did you come back alone?"
Selina thought that Elias would replace the child in no time, and Amanda would come back with Aiden.
Amanda took a deep breath as if she were exhausted. She sprawled on the couch. "They're still looking. I'll wait and see if they have any updates tomorrow. I'm tired, so I'll go back to my room to sleep now. Don't get me supper; I want to sleep through the night."
"Understood..."
Selina watched as Amanda got up weakly as if she had lost her soul, then went back to her room and closed the door.
In the room, Amanda lay on the bed, pulling the covers over her head.
She hoped that when she woke up from her sleep, Aiden would be sent home already. She wished that Howard would have mercy.
Meanwhile, after Amanda was sent home, Elias told Yacob to continue checking the surveillance cameras in the amusement park to see if he could pick up any clues.
Then, Elias went straight to the Winters Manor, ready to have a proper talk with Howard.
His car slowly pulled up in the garage.
Elias got out of the car and walked into the Winters Manor. When the butler saw Elias, he immediately stepped forward and welcomed the latter. "Mr. Elias, what brings you here? Old Mr. Winters is practicing calligraphy in the study. You can go see him."
Elias scrutinized the butler in front of him, then said in a low voice, "Be honest with me. Is the kid here or not? Did Grandpa hide him again?"
The butler replied earnestly, "Mr. Elias, Old Mr. Winters isn't involved in this. It was true that he hid the child last time, but this time, he didn't do anything at all. He was so enraged by what you said over the phone last time that he never took a step out of Winters Manor since then. He couldn't be bothered about his great-grandson, either. He simply spent all his time practicing calligraphy and saying that he missed your father."
Elias fell silent.
Had he guessed wrong, after all?
Who else in Imperia was capable of making someone instantly disappear without a trace?
He thought for a moment, but the most plausible suspect was still Howard.
After all, Howard's bodyguards were exceptionally skilled, so it wasn't difficult for them to grab a child in public while steering clear of the surveillance cameras.
Elias walked straight toward the study.
He stopped outside the study and peered through the door that was left slightly ajar. He could see Howard working with brush strokes at the desk.
Elias knocked on the door out of courtesy.
Howard's voice rang out from within. "Come in."
After opening the door and walking in, Elias sat on a mahogany chair at the side. He watched Howard practicing calligraphy as he said in a low voice, "Grandpa, I heard that you haven't left the house in days." Howard looked up and glanced at him, then snorted. "That's none of your business! Why do you care so much about me now? You wish I were dead, don't you? Also, did you hear what you shouted over the phone just now? How are you so sure that I was the one who took the child away? Also, what sort of parents are you two? Can't you even keep an eye on your child? And you suspect me as soon as the child goes missing!"
Elias said, "I'm not suspecting you, but your behavior is a little unusual. He's the great-grandson you've been waiting for all these years, but now that I told you we lost him, you don't look worried at all... Unless he's right in your hands."
"How can I not worry? I've already sent my men to look for him, but what use is there if I panic? You've already pissed me off, so if I add worry into the mix, I'll be dead by now."
Howard was genuinely sad this time. He never thought that his grandson, whom he had raised since he was young, would say such things to him. He was so saddened by it that he couldn't even care about his great-grandson.
Elias still couldn't believe Howard as he narrowed his eyes and said suspiciously, "Is the child truly not with you? If I replace him somewhere in your territory, things might get awkward for you."
With a clack, Howard threw the brush onto the floor as he raged, "Go and look for him, then! If you can replace him anywhere in my territory, that'd be a miracle. I said he's not with me, and that's all there is to it! Your child went missing but look at you! You still have the leisure to come here and piss me off! Go and look for the child right now! If you can't replace him, you're banished from the Winters Family!"
