Chapter 221 Aiden Is Struck With a Fever
After leaving Galaxy Bay, Amanda headed to the cemetery instead of going home.
She had to see her mother, for she hadn't done so in a long time.
On the way to her destination, she bought some lilies, which were her mother's favorite flowers. She placed them in front of her grave. As she looked at her mother's smiling face in the photo, her eyes curved into crescents as well.
"How are you doing, Mom? I haven't visited you for a while because I've been swamped with work." Amanda sighed and crouched down before touching her mother's photo. As she looked at her mother's smile, she felt downcast.
"Mom, why have I fallen for the same man twice? Why am I so foolish? I don't hate him or anyone else. I only blame myself for being unwise."
Her eyes welled up with tears. As she glanced at her mother's photo, she recalled what had happened in the last moments of her life.
Before her mother passed away, Elias fulfilled his duty as a son-in-law. Although Elias didn't love Amanda, he never evaded his responsibilities.
The man stood in front of the woman's deathbed and listened to her last words patiently. Although he was merely putting on an act, he appeared serious.
At that time, Amanda was grateful that he was willing to play along so that her mother could leave for the other world in peace.
As she recalled the scene back then, her tears slid down her cheeks and fell onto the lilies.
This time, she was more sorrowful than how she felt four years ago.
She remained standing there until all her tears dried up. Then, she looked up at the endless sky, feeling that her life was hopeless.
"I'll take my leave now, Mom. I'll visit you again. I'm sorry for always talking about myself whenever I come here. I hope you're not pissed at me." She put on a listless smile.
All of a sudden, her phone started ringing. She fished it out and realized it was Selina calling.
She quickly pulled herself together and connected the call before placing the phone beside her ear.
Before she could even say anything, Selina's anxious voice was heard over the phone. "Amanda! A teacher from the kindergarten gave me a call and told me that Aiden is down with a fever. I'm heading there right now. Please come over as well!"
"What? A fever? I'll be going over right away! Please hurry up."
Amanda's expression changed as she turned around and left without bidding her mother farewell. Why is Aiden struck with a fever out of nowhere? The last time he came down with a fever was last year. Unbeknownst to her, Selina didn't only call her but also her ex-husband, Elias.
He was the child's father, after all.
Aiden had been listless the entire morning since he arrived at the kindergarten. When it was lunchtime, he didn't have much appetite.
The teacher noticed his anomaly and took his body temperature, only to discover that it was 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
When Selina arrived at the kindergarten, she saw the teacher trying to cool Aiden down.
"What's going on, miss? Why does he have a fever all of a sudden?" Selina walked over and took the child from the teacher.
"I have no idea. Aiden has been lethargic the entire morning, and he didn't have much appetite during lunchtime. I took his body temperature just now and discovered his fever."
A minute after Selina entered the classroom, Amanda arrived as well.
When she saw that Aiden was asleep, she felt her heart getting twisted. She went over and held the child in her arms, forgetting that she was still wearing the stilettos from the day before. She gently pressed her face against the child's forehead and realized it was scorching.
"Let's go to the hospital right away."
"Sure." Selina followed her closely. A fever was no laughing matter as it might damage a child's brain.
As soon as they left the kindergarten, Amanda lost her balance and fell forward. Seeing that Aiden was about to fall to the ground as well, Selina exclaimed, "Amanda!"
She wanted to save them, but it was too late.
Just then, a man appeared and wrapped his arm around Amanda's waist. At the same time, he held the child in his other arm. Amanda almost jumped out of her skin. When she regained her balance, she looked up before her eyes widened with disbelief.
That was because the man was none other than Elias!
Presently, the man was holding the child in one arm while supporting her weight with his other.
When Amanda looked at his face, she couldn't help but recall what had happened in the garage the other day.
She pushed the man away and snapped. "Let go of me! What are you doing here? Give my child back to me!"
She tried to snatch the child before she even stabilized herself. As such, she lost her balance again and crashed into the man's embrace.
Elias hugged her tightly, but the woman forcefully pushed him away again.
"Don't touch me! Who told you to come here?!"
She recalled Elias saying he didn't want her and the child, so what was he doing there? Was he trying to annoy her?
When Selina saw that, she was puzzled as to what was going on. She said cautiously, "I was the one who told Mr. Winters about it. He's the child's father, after all. I..." Selina appeared aggrieved, for she had no idea why Amanda was mad. The woman had prepared dinner for Elias a few days ago, but they fell out so soon.
Elias held the child tightly and frowned. "Stop talking and send the child to the hospital right now. He's sick."
With that, he turned around and headed to his car with the child in his arms.
Amanda wasn't in the mood to argue with him as the child had to be treated immediately. His illness was severe, after all.
After they arrived at the children's hospital, the doctor examined Aiden and put him on a drip.
Amanda had finally calmed down at this point. As she looked at the sick child, she felt heartbroken.
However, when she caught sight of the man beside her, she couldn't help but clench her fists, wondering what he was doing there.
Is he trying to tell me I'm not even qualified to be a mother because I almost fell down while carrying the child?
On the other hand, Elias was being monitored by Jack's assistant as if he was a prisoner. Jack claimed that the assistant would help Elias out and obey his orders.
Elias had received Selina's call during the board meeting earlier. When he learned that the child was down with a fever, he immediately left the meeting room.
His unusual behavior caught Jack's attention. Left with no choice, Elias lied that his ex-wife was threatening him with the child. As such, the shrewd Jack sent his assistant to follow Elias. He had to replace out if Elias was still in love with Amanda and how close the young man was to his child.
If Elias was inseparable from the child, Stephanie's future kids with him would probably be at a disadvantage.
Jack was a far-sighted person who even thought about his future grandchildren. Either way, he wouldn't let his daughter and his future grandchildren suffer any grievances or face any threats.
