The Lawyer’s Romance in Law -
Chapter 233
Chapter 233 I'm Not Sure if I Should Say This
"Stephanie? The same Stephanie, who's the young lady of Allegra Group? Jack Allegra's daughter?"
Elias replied, "That's right."
After he was done, he turned around and left, leaving Grace alone with a shocked expression. She wondered how things could change so quickly. Did Elias not say he wanted to get back with Amanda? Why did he suddenly have a change of heart and decide to marry Jack's daughter, Stephanie?
If she could not even deal with Amanda, how was she going to deal with Stephanie? Stephanie was a real young lady from a wealthy family, which meant she was a great match with Elias.
"That's impossible... He can't change his mind so quickly. What's more, they have a child together." Grace could not figure it out because Elias was not an irresponsible person. He had previously stayed with her for many years despite not having any feelings for her, so how could he abandon Amanda and marry Stephanie after having a child with Amanda?
It was so confusing that she had forgotten about Howard's accident.
Elias arrived at the scene of the incident alone and began recalling how his grandfather rolled down the stairs according to the butler's description. He fell into deep thought while looking at the top of the stairs, seemingly able to see how much despair his grandfather felt when tumbling those steps.
At that moment, a woman's voice suddenly appeared. "Mr. Winters, you're back."
The voice interrupted Elias' thoughts, and he turned to see it was Lexi, the servant who used to care for his mother. Lexi had been free since his mother was admitted to a nursing home.
At the sight of Elias, she seemed somewhat shocked, and her eyes filled with fear. To be fair, though, barely any servants at the Winters Residence were unafraid of him.
"Why are you here?"
"I'm now responsible for cleaning and need to clean the railings. I didn't know you were here. I'll come back later."
Lexi was about to leave, but he stopped her. "Wait."
She turned around. "Is there anything you need?"
"When Grandpa fell that day... Were you at home?" he asked.
That question shocked her because she thought he was suspicious of her, so she involuntarily felt nervous. "Yes, I was."
Seeing how nervous she was, he narrowed his eyes. "Why are you nervous?"
At that point, her voice began to tremble. "I... I'm a little nervous because you might suspect me of something. There have been rumors about Old Mr. Winters arguing with a woman before he fell, and you're looking everywhere for that woman now. I'm afraid you might think it's me."
He frowned. "I didn't expect the news to spread so quickly. But don't worry. I won't suspect you of anything. I just want to know if you remember anything peculiar from that day."
At the mention of something strange, Lexi suddenly recalled a matter but was unsure whether to tell him. "Mr. Winters, I'm not sure if I should say this..."
"Tell me!" Elias stared at her, waiting for her to speak.
After looking around like she was trying to avoid anyone eavesdropping, she lowered her voice to say, "When you mention that, something strange did happen that day, and I even thought I was hallucinating. That very day, I was responsible for cleaning your bedroom, but I kept having a hunch that someone was inside. I even checked around but found no one, but I swear I could hear movement coming from inside. Then, I left the room and heard about Old Mr. Winters' accident. I heard he went into your bedroom that day, so I suspect..."
The more he listened, the more mysterious the story became. "What do you suspect?"
"I suspect... Perhaps a female ghost? The first person to discover Old Mr. Winters was Miss Bailey, but she said it wasn't her. So, could it be a ghost? That day, I kept feeling that someone was in your bedroom, and Old Mr. Winters had been inside as well..."
As Lexi continued to speak of her suspicions, the topic gradually became more mysterious. However, what she said seemed nonsensical to Elias, who could not stand it anymore. She had begun talking about supernatural theories!
"Alright. That's all. You may continue your job." He was in no mood to continue listening to her nonsense. Therefore, she could only nod and leave.
His gaze returned to the top of the stairs, but Lexi's story had made him suspicious. Could someone be hiding inside his bedroom? But who would dare to do so? He had made clear orders that besides cleaning his room, no one was allowed to stay there or touch anything. Therefore, who in the Winters Residence would dare enter his bedroom without permission?
After searching his mind, he still could not figure out who it was. Could it be an outsider? Who could it be, though?
The following evening at the Allegra Villa, after Elias came to the villa and had his measurements done, he and the Allegra Family sat down for dinner. It was also the first time he met Stephanie's mother and grandmother. Both seemed like they were not ones to mess with.
He sat beside Stephanie and focused on eating his food and did not once serve her anything.
When Jack saw that, he was even more satisfied with his future son-in-law because he supposed those on top should not pay heed to insignificant details. Anyway, Elias was many times better than the poor kid.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Allegra, Edith, was the opposite. She thought Elias did not care about her daughter. "Elias, you're getting engaged by the end of the month. Will your elders be attending the ceremony?" she asked.
Since Stephanie was the Allegras' only daughter, an elder from the Winters Family should attend the ceremony to witness the occasion.
Elias put down his utensils and replied, "Mrs. Allegra, I'm sure you know about my family's situation, so I'm not planning on having any elders present at the ceremony. I can decide my matters on my own." Old Mrs. Allegra, Cassandra, was unhappy about that, slamming her utensils on the table. "That won't do. Is Stephanie an embarrassment to you? An engagement only happens once in a lifetime. How can you not let one of your elders witness such an event?"
Suppressing his frustration, Elias patiently explained again, "My grandpa and father have passed away, and my mother is in a nursing home. Whom would you like me to invite?"
Cassandra was instantly speechless, while Edith also looked displeased. It felt like they were being looked down on.
At that moment, Jack came forward to mediate the situation. "Alright. You women are so troublesome. As long as the children are happy, there's no need to abide by the rules. Aren't we his elders as well?" "But this is not how we do things! If that's the case, then I won't attend the ceremony. You guys can go," Edith threatened. How could she allow her daughter's engagement party to happen so casually? "There's nothing wrong with this plan. I am the decision-maker of this household, so it doesn't matter whether you attend the ceremony or not. Do you think we can't hold the ceremony without you?" Jack's tone was extremely harsh.
When Edith heard that, she lost it and reprimanded, "Jack Allegra! You're always so full of yourself and think you can make all the decisions! Don't you forget that it was your fault that we lost Amelia for twenty years! I don't even know if she's dead or alive, and now, you wish to dictate your daughter's life!"
