The Marriage That Never Was (Leonard and Lisa ) -
Chapter 91
Chapter 91
“I treated you to dinner to show my gratitude for helping me with the cake incident,” Lisa explained, surprised by the huge misunderstanding between them. “As for the umbrella, did it imply something?”
“The umbrella symbolizes sheltering each other from the storms of life. Don’t act like you don’t know that,” Leonard said through gritted teeth.
“I didn’t. I’ve never been in a relationship…” Lisa had only read about flowers and chocolates being romantic gifts in novels.
‘Da mn it, even an umbrella has a hidden romantic meaning,’ she thought.
Leonard was nearly in rage after hearing her first sentence, but her second sentence slightly lightened his mood.
“Well, what about this? How can you write something like this if you’ve never been in a relationship?” Leonard threw a sticky note from his pocket at her.
Lisa picked up the sticky note and looked at it, surprised. It was the same sentence she had written in the restaurant. “I found this online. How’d you end up with it?”
“Didn’t you write it for me?” Leonard asked, squinting. “And when you showed me the suite key card, weren’t you hinting that we should take things further after dinner.”
Lisa was astonished. She could not understand how Leonard’s imagination and ability to read between the lines became so exaggerated.
“I did write a sticky note, but it wasn’t for you. The restaurant had a promotion today. Couples who came to eat together could get a discount, so I lied to the waiter and said we were a couple. Then she asked me to write a message to stick on the wall.
“I was worried about getting caught, so I wrote that. As for the suite, I won it. It’s the first prize at the restaurant’s sweepstakes,” Lisa explained, raising her hand to make a solemn vow. “I cross my heart. If it’s a lie, I’ll get hit by a car when I leave.”
Lisa’s sincere vow made Leonard begin to doubt himself. However, the misunderstanding was too big and made the respected Leonard Parker look embarrassing.
“Then why’d you complain about me coming late when you opened the door?”
“Well, I thought you were Celine.” Lisa blinked, feeling helpless. “I didn’t know you’d come, and I didn’t mean to invite you.”
The suite fell into an awkward silence, and even the movie on the TV had ended.
Lisa suddenly noticed the storm-like expression on Leonard’s handsome face. It dawned on her that someone like Leonard cared deeply about his image and took it very seriously.
It was over. Just when their relationship had slightly improved, it collapsed again.
But at that point, Lisa could not care anymore. She felt drained.
Leonard’s anger was ready to erupt. For the first time in his life, he felt deeply ashamed. After they had undressed, she explained that it was all a misunderstanding.
“Well then,” Leonard said in a cold and calculated tone, “I’ll give you another chance. What do you want for our marriage? Do you want a divorce, or do you want to stay together?”
He did not think she would refuse. The misunderstanding was because she did not understand his hints, and there was no clear answer. Once she agreed, everything would get back on track.
The previous attempt might have been interrupted, but he could try again.
