The unwanted wife’s unexpected comeback -
Chapter 118
Chapter 118:
? ? ? ? ?
Alicia's injuries were not too serious. After three days in the hospital, she was almost back to her normal self. However, the doctor recommended that she remain under observation for a little longer because of her head injury.
“Could I go home just for tonight?” Alice asked. “I can come back early tomorrow for the IV.”
The doctor looked at her questioningly. “Is there something urgent you need to take care of?”
Alice hesitated to answer.
It wasn't exactly urgent, but if she ignored it, she would feel uncomfortable.
“Yes,” he replied, scratching his head nervously. Unfortunately, he grazed the wound, causing him to wince. “There’s… a broken pipe in my house. There’s no one to take care of it and I have to notify the manager.”
The doctor looked at her with concern. “Are you sure you should be dealing with this in your condition? Can’t you ask someone else for help?”
Alicia raised an eyebrow. “Is my condition that serious?”
"Not exactly, but you have to avoid overexertion. Even if you go home, make sure you get as much rest as possible."
"I'll be careful," Alice assured the doctor. Seeing her determination, the doctor allowed her to go.
"Make sure you come see me first thing tomorrow morning."
"Understood.
When Alicia left the hospital, it was already after eight in the evening.
The temperature had dropped noticeably. The autumn chill surprised her as she stepped outside.
It had been three days since Alicia had last contacted Caden. As she typed out a message, a feeling of unease crept over her. She asked, “Are you done with work?” It was usually the time of day when Caden was busiest.
More than ten minutes passed before his reply came. “What's wrong?”
Alice replied: “It doesn't matter. Concentrate on your work.”
Caden quickly replied, “What? Just say it.”
Alice could almost imagine his impatient expression at her short reply.
With a small smile, she replied, “You helped me at the Gray family's house, and I promised to make you a meal. I'm free today. How about I keep that promise?”
Right after sending it, he was worried that it might be taken the wrong way, so he added, "That way I won't owe you any more favors."
Caden read the message half an hour later.
His mood changed and he decided to end the discussion.
"We'll continue with this tomorrow," he said, rising from his chair. He grabbed his coat and added, "We're done for today."
Hank rubbed his tired eyes as he followed. “It's very late, sir. You haven't had dinner yet. Would you like me to order you something?”
Caden climbed into the driver's seat.
"Don't bother. I'll have dinner at home."
Hank stood by the car, confused. “Are you cooking tonight?”
Caden glanced at him briefly. “Someone's making me dinner.”
Hank's eyes widened. “Did you hire a chef, Mr. Ward?” He quickly ran to the passenger door and asked, “Can I join you for dinner?”
Before Hank could reach the doorknob, Caden was gone, leaving him behind.
Hank stared at him in disbelief, completely stunned.
Who exactly was that mysterious cook?
Alicia leaned against the wall, trying to steady herself. Just as she felt her knees weaken and prepared to crouch down, the elevator doors opened, revealing Caden stepping out.
Seeing him, she stood up and looked at him.
The lights in the hallway were bright, but the rushing wind carried a biting chill. She noticed that his reddened eyes were clear and focused despite the cold.
Before I could ask a question, Alice said, “I haven't waited long. “It took me half an hour to do my shopping and then I saw your message about coming back.”
Caden did a quick calculation. It had taken him about twenty minutes to get home.
He must have been here for quite some time.
He first noticed the bump on his head and noticed that it had shrunk considerably.
Then I noticed his hands.
Alicia was carrying shopping bags and the straps dug into her fingers, turning them red.
Caden took off his coat and draped it over his shoulders. Then he reached out to enter the code for the door.
“Have you been discharged yet?” he asked, his voice tired from a long day.
Alice felt the warmth of his coat and stammered, “No… I’ve only been allowed out for a little while.” The door clicked open.
After hearing her response, Caden turned and looked at her.
“It seems you were eager to eat,” he said with a small smile.
Alice's pale face turned red and she quickly replied, "It's not that! I just came to cook for you."
“That's what I was saying,” Caden replied, taking the shopping bags from her and then taking her hand. “What did you think I meant?”
Alice didn't know what to say.
"You always fall for the same trick," Caden said.
She looked at their hands, still intertwined. His warmth and the touch of his skin tugged at his emotions. Her face turned even redder, and she quickly pulled her hand away.
Caden ignored her reaction.
"Change your shoes," he told her.
There were no shoes for her here, but he had a new pair she could wear.
Her feet were much smaller than his. Her shoes were size 10H. They were too big for her. When she put them on, they made noise when she walked.
Caden poured her a glass of hot water and was about to call her when he saw her head straight for the kitchen.
His wound had not yet healed, so his movements were slow.
There was a certain grace in the way she moved. Under the warm light, Caden felt a comforting sense of calm after three hectic days.
He came over, holding the glass of water. “If it's too much, don't push yourself. You've offered me this meal for three days; “a few more won’t change anything.”
Alice looked back at him. “But I’m already here, aren’t I?”
Seeing how determined she was, Caden said, “If you’re worried about not doing enough, then do something different.”
Alice looked at him, puzzled. “Do what?”
Caden pressed his lips together, his expression serious. “Love.”
Alice stared at him, unable to utter a word.
