Twisting Her Fate
Chapter 127

The gray sports car travels into the dense forest, the roar of the powerful engine echoes through the trees. Connor runs through the thick trees, his run has been so subdued before this, but out here he finally feels like he is going to gain some freedom. While he was anticipating this may take a while, he is starting to get frustrated. Not sleeping in a bed doesn't worry him, sleeping in natural form is a lot more comfortable than sleeping in his desk chair.

He misses a shower, but mostly he just wants to see her. There has not been a single day in the last three years that he hasn't missed her so much that it becomes hard to breathe. Just because he is getting closer to her doesn't make the situation lessen. If anything, it is getting worse. He craves her like the air in his lungs. He needs her.

He resists the urge to throw his head back and howl, howl out his anguish, howl out the fact that his heart is still nowhere near his body, his heart has been misplaced for so long, taken by the most amazing girl.

He doesn't even want to take it back, he just wants her to know that she has it for an entire lifetime.

The gray sports car pulls up in the garage of a house and Connor watches from afar. He is sure that this is not it, they are not on any claimed territory and the house looks slightly run down.

Connor shifts and stands behind a tree, stretching out his skin side. He has spent little time in his human form. He watches the house intently, hoping to see someone else, hoping that this is the final destination. All Connor's hopes are shattered when Terrance and Levi walk out of the house with all their camping gear.

Connor sighs as his back slides down the tree and he sits on the ground, running his filthy hands down his face. He knows exactly what this is as he used to be the one to do this with Terrance, hiking and camping to gather ingredients. It is a miracle if the process takes less than a week.

3 weeks after separation

"So where did you want to start?"

Madison flicks her hair back in an exaggerated motion. The golden tendrils catching the sun from the skylight have a healthy glow, unlike Evie's lifeless golden locks. There isn't a single bit of Evie that has not been damaged by the neglect. Health radiates from Madison, it is just a glaring comparison.

Connor places a hand on top of Evie's to try and help control the shaking. He isn't too worried about the twisting of skin or the nails digging deeply into him. There is little she could do that he will not recover from. He just doesn't want her actions to become too obvious and the two in front of them to clam up.

"Are your parents here? I would love to meet them if possible"

Madison's light and airy face instantly changes at the mention of her parents.

"They are no longer here"

Madison's closed-off attitude makes it slightly awkward, but Connor has done enough negotiation to be able to cope with it.

"Oh I can understand that. My own parents and brother and sister died when I was only fourteen"

Bringing it back around to a relatable occurrence and offering up a bit of information about himself often works and he can only hope that that is the case.

Madison's stiffened shoulders loosen up and the shadow of a smile appears on her face. Gone is the angry scowl.

"My own parents were weak"

"How so?"

"Is it important in terms of an alliance?"

"Not exactly, but every past Alpha and Luna shapes a pack with a good or bad. Every single person shapes the pack to what it is. Of course, I will never judge an individual by the actions of their parents, but history is import ant"

Evie glances sideways at Connor. Appreciative of the fact that he can spin such utter nonsense to sound so incredibly reasonable that someone would sound rude to not answer.

Even if Madison is so unwilling, Connor has left her with no way out. The Azure pack is weaker than the stormy pack and even if they don't become allies today, Madison is not willing to make an enemy of Alpha Storm.

"How much have you heard of the Azure pack?"

"Very little. I am sorry"

It isn't far off the truth, he has only learned more about it since he met Evie.

"Four years ago, my twin sister Evie went missing. I guess you heard about that?"

Connor can only agree, he would have had to have been living under a rock to not hear about Evie.

"I did. I had no idea she was from this pack and I had no idea that she had a twin sister"

Madison snorts as she looks toward the empty wall that used to house a near shrine for Evie and that was before Evie ever disappeared. It is the standard response. No one ever knew the precious Evie even had a twin sister. Madison had always faded into the background.

"Anyway, she doesn't matter now, you were asking about my parents?"

Madison's long red fingernails pick at the tiny pieces of lint on her clothing and Damon looks away, a surge of pain in his heart at the thought of the woman he thought he knew.

"They couldn't take their failure to protect her. They couldn't forget, so they took the cowards way out"

Connor is almost too scared to ask, he is worried that the woman beside him can't take it. He regrets his decision to bring her, but this is important, it is something she needs to experience herself, it is part of her journey forward, it is working toward her healing. "What do you mean by that?"

"They handed me the title and then went on a trip to the sea. They walked hand in hand into the ocean never to return"

Damon watches the woman sitting beside Connor, her head lowered, the sheet of white blonde hair obscuring her face, protecting her from the outside world. But even at the distance Damon can see her whole body quaking, he frowns heavily, there is just something about that woman.

What would even elicit such a reaction from a stranger? It is hardly like death is that out of the ordinary in the werewolf world and the fact that it was a strangely peaceful death, slightly romantic if it wasn't the sad intention behind it.

Why does it look like she's crying? Why does it look like her world is falling apart? It isn't only now, there has been something strange about her reaction for the entire visit.

Why would someone as powerful as Connor, as celebrated as Connor, choose such a woman to take as his luna? A woman that can't even hold herself together in the presence of others. What type of luna will she make for such a powerful pack? Isn't he just asking for destruction?

Such a woman would never elevate him. His love for her must be strong to put up with such glaring weakness.

Damon thinks back to the girl he loved once, how she betrayed him in such a way. He thought his love was strong. He thought their love was strong and could endure anything. But he was wrong.

That was all a lifetime ago. Back when sweet innocence touched his heart, loving words filled his ears and gentle caresses set his soul on fire. "They are dead?"

Evie's shaky quiet voice can be heard. It is the first time that Evie has spoken in the presence of the two and her voice is as feeble as her shaking body.

While on the outside, it appears that she is weak. That is only because she is pretending to be Leilani. If anyone knew her and what she had been through and what she is still going through, they would applaud the fact that she is not passed out on the floor, that she is able to overcome her anxiety enough to even be able to speak words. In the space of a short hour, she has found out that her parents are dead and the man she was meant to be fated to is actually with her twin sister. Others in the same situation might be in a foetal position rocking back and forth, maybe screaming or sobbing.

At this point, Evie is so broken that it's just some extra cr*cks. Once something is broken beyond repair, does a few more pieces really matter? Nothing hurts anymore because she hurts so much all the time that it is hard to tell what is new and what is old, it all just hurts.

Madison shrugs her shoulders, not hearing the turmoil in the girls voice at all, her focus is on Connor.

"Yes, but as Alpha Storm said, the past doesn't even matter anymore. Damon and I are the leadership now. The failings of the previous generation do not define us"
