Twisting Her Fate -
Chapter 128
Connor doesn't follow directly behind the pair, they are easier to track on foot, but the downside is that Levi will be able to sense him easier, so Connor has to stay back. Connor is tempted to wait with the car until they return, but he can't risk losing them now. As the couple sling large packs onto their backs and disappear into the thick trees, Connor scopes the house, checking for anything that could let them know of his presence. Connor sneaks into the house.
Hudson looks at his phone as a notification comes through telling him that someone has accessed the house again. He shakes his head, those two always forget something. Camping is simple for a wolf, but Levi has to rough it as a human to be with his mate and the amount of things that humans need to be in the wilderness, it takes away from the whole experience.
Hudson doesn't even bother to check the camera, just running out to the training grounds, he was already running late and Leilani runs a tight shift.
Connor looks around the abandoned house, there are signs of the squad, he can tell that they lived there at one stage, long ago.
Was this where they first disappeared too?
It hardly seems that hard to replace. How could he not replace a trace? Everything is covered in dust but any evidence of anything is long gone. Connor walks into a bedroom and he just knows that this is where Leilani stayed. Even though her scent is long gone, it feels something, he runs a hand over the blue bed spread, a layer of dust falls to the floor, Connor ignores the filthy state of the bedding as he lays down on the bed. The back of his head rests on the pillow, his hands rest underneath the pillow, the tips of his fingers hitting something foreign, he rolls slightly, lifting the pillow and staring at a photo of himself which has stood the test of time in it's hiding place.
Connor presses his head against the photo that he had no idea that Leilani even took. He doesn't know whether he should be happy she was hiding such a thing in her bed or devastated that she didn't take it with her when she left. **3 weeks after separation**
Connor frowns at Madison's lack of grief for her parents and her lack of empathy for the situation. It is truly heartless. Damon picks up the vibe straight away. The ex-alpha and Luna truly loved both their daughters but they couldn't get over the fact that they failed in the protection of Evie. They nearly ran the pack into the ground in the search for Evie, only to come up with nothing.
They had nothing left to give Madison, all their attention was on the unknown state of their missing daughter. They couldn't sleep, they couldn't eat, their heads filled with vile things that could be happening to their sweet and beautiful daughter, all the way from exactly what was happening, to a maggot-infested corpse.
Damon elbows his mate in the ribs. She can't show her nonchalant attitude, others don't see how much the situation hurt Madison. Instead of her finally becoming the beloved daughter, she was forgotten.
Damon was the same, he didn't pay any attention to Madison, devoting much time and energy to the search of his missing future luna and mate. That was until the time that he finally learned the truth about the girl he thought he knew. Madison comes to her senses at Damon's reminder.
"Sorry I am still in my grieving process"
Connor can't call her out on it, not now when they have only skimmed the top of what they need to know and it has already delivered a devastating blow. Connor presses a hand on Evie's knee, trying to offer her some comfort. As he continues talking to this woman, his opinion of her is dipping to such a low level that he is struggling to keep an indifferent look on his face.
"Sorry to ask, I am just surprised to hear that Evie was actually from your pack"
Damon watches as the woman with white blonde hair doesn't lift her head at all, all he has heard is the three words from her but they were indistinguishable.
Madison rolls her eyes and leans back on the couch, her eyes move to a set of steel-gray eyes that are taking in her every movement.
She covers her mouth with her fist and coughs awkwardly to break the tension.
"You have to understand that it is all that anyone associates with the Azure pack, the whole pack is still cursed with the name of being the place that Evie was from" "Cursed?"
"It is just hard to stand on our own when the name is affiliated with a dead girl"
"Dead?"
"Of course it has been four years"
Connor doesn't dare to look at Evie, just staring at Madison's lips, which are slowly curling into a smirk as she continues.
"That is why the Azure pack is soon going to be no more. Damon's own pack, the golden dawn, will be absorbing it as soon as we can"
Evie's claws dig into Connor's flesh. Connor nods slightly to show that he understands.
"How long?"
"It will take about two years to become official but we have already been operating as one pack. It is only a minor technicality at this point"
Peaceful absorption where no money is exchanged is an unreasonably long process. Connor looks like he just thought of something, even though it has been on the tip of his tongue the whole time.
"If memory serves, there were two packs that were involved in the search"
Connor looks directly at Damon this time, both alphas, but the aura of one far out shadows the other. Damon is a year younger than Connor, but in terms of wisdom, he might as well be a century behind.
In normal circumstances, Damon is the smartest one in the room. He has a quick mind and is able to see through things that few others can, but when it comes to Connor, Damon feels like he is outmatched in every way, like he is laid bare for the very first time. Damon nods. "That was the golden dawn pack"
There is no point denying it, it is not hard to verify such information. Connor's free hand rests against the arm of the couch, his fingers tapping on the leather in a rhythmic pattern, sounding like a heart beat. The sound is oddly unsettling.
"It was nice of you to devote so many resources to your mates sisters disappearance"
The expression on Damon's face turns dismal as his hand unconsciously moves to cover Madison's mark on his shoulder, the little raised surfaces are a reminder that he never got to have his fated.
The mate that he chose as some sort of vengeance has the same face as the woman he loved so dearly, also serves as a constant reminder that some people are not as they appear and it is so easy to be played when love blinds. Werewolf packs are largely selfish. They wouldn't use resources to replace another who wasn't directly tied to the pack, a friend of a friend would not be a good enough reason, a sister of a future luna, still not enough reason. "Madison wasn't my mate back then"
"So you searched for her twin sister, because?"
"Evie was my fated"
Connor sits back in surprise even though he saw it coming a mile away. Evie can see Damon through white blonde tendrils, she wants to see his face for this, pieces are already fitting together in her mind. Looking at her sister's expression wasn't what did it. It was the very first moment that she looked at the photos that Leilani showed her, she had already put it together in her head, watching Madison's expressions, the pieces all secure in place, painting a clear picture of the exact events that lead up to Evie's downfall. Now all Evie wants to know is Damon's opinion on all of this, even if Madison did what she did, even through everything else. How did it end up that Damon, her fated was marked by her sister, marked by the very person that orchestrated all of this? Damon's opinion is what matters here. She really wants to know, she wants to see his expression.
What Madison did she actually understands. Madison has always been a jealous, vengeful b*tch. The level is what Evie never noticed before, or maybe she didn't want to see in her own sister.
But Damon was her fate. He supposedly loved her as she loved him. They spent so much time together, she told him every little secret just as he told her his, he was her first kiss as she was his.
He was her first everything, all the gentle touches, all the sweet words, how did he end up wearing her twins mark?
She didn't even think that Damon and Madison even got along that well when they were together. She didn't know if it was her bad mouthing her sister or for another reason. She tried not to bad mouth Madison, or complain about her, but it was always something that she felt like she failed in and her failure Evie kept very close to her heart and it was inevitable that she would say something to Damon about it. He found a way into her heart so revealed herself to him.
She never would have even considered Damon and Madison as friends. They weren't enemies. Evie is just interested how they went from what they were, to sitting on the couch wearing each other's marks holding each other close. What happened in that time? If Damon had moved on with someone else, it wouldn't be as bad. Why couldn't it be someone far away from her? Why did it have to be Madison?
